Our beloved and (Dis)tinguished long-time member, Rick Landry, is back once again with a fresh new-look column. You may remember his very popular "The Good, Bad & Ugly" series. If this piece is any indication of work to come, then Mr. Landry will be treating us in wonderful fashion, yet again. Thank you Rick, CO Featured as our cover-story: www.habsrus.com

Dashing...pretty!!?? What'd you guys put in your coffee this morning? Were you fellas out with HA and BC last night? Sheesh. Rick, Pierre, Bob, Phil, and Keith are indeed fine writers and members of our little community here. But, more importantly, they've represented themselves as OUTSTANDING individuals. Always willing to lend a hand (an ear), always there to welcome new members to the fold, and always there to contribute in any way they can. We're indeed a lucky bunch. Now, I need to get back to my blueberry waffles. Spiro

A great column indeed Rick. Thank you for the interspersed real life family bits as well. Everything in perspective you know. As far as Larry "why isn't #19 up in th rafters where he belongs" Robinson's return to Montreal is concerned, it is a topic on my mind off and on for the past three years. If there is anyone out there who is thinking "no way" ponder this; where would we be if we had done the right thing and hired him after the first time he was dismissed by Lou? Why on earth didn't we pick him up as an assistant, consultant or anything to get him on paper and in a few newspapers as a part of this team a couple of months ago after round two with Lou? Would this not be a serious sign to the people of Montreal, the fans across the country and the players the organization is / will be working to entice to become members of Le Club de Hockey Canadien that we are serious, have a plan and will do whatever it takes to move in that direction? It is beyond a PR move; it is a stroke of marketing brilliance. Franchises and teams built on nothing and only as a business for financial gain do not need what we need. It is critical for as many of the capable, willing and storied members of the alumni of this hallowed institution to be back in the fold offering and doing their best to bring back the pride and understanding of why we're known as both Les Habitants and Les Glorieux in the same breath. It is commitment by the group that is assembled to be the best they can be every day and do anything for the team. It is an attitude of what if? Big Bird's spot may be as an assistant coach in this league for now; but why not here? In closing this passionate rambling I share this recollection. In 1993 we had unbelievable goaltending from Patrick. We had timely scoring from Mr. Leclaire and Mr. Desjardins to name a few. I believe the attitude that started the ball rolling that playoff year stemmed from Guy Carbonneau and Kirk Muller's absolute dedication and willingness to sacrifice and put themselves, literally in Guy's case, in the line of fire. Most people say we did not have the talent to win that year, we had a bunch of lucky breaks. I say BS. I believe we could have gone through anyone that year. Larry for anything he wants to do, Bob Gainey in lieu of Pierre Boivin and hey, why not go out on a limb and bring in Serge Savard as a special advisor to Gillette.

Good stuff Rick, You're right about Gilmour, the guy has been huge ever since December. Petrov and Zednik are heading for carreer years in goals and Doug certainly has something to do with it. I was REALLY against this acquisition and have been ranting against it quite a bit in the first half... I said he was finished, done like dinner, a lockerroom cancer, bla, bla, bla... A huge crow pie serving for me.

I also deserve some crow for basically saying Dougie was finished before X-mas.Nice column Rick!
I agree, we shouldn't be all that dissapointed if we miss the playoffs. We are going in the right direction, we have improved tremendously this year, we have great young kids coming up, we will have Saku and Audi back next year, etc...it's not like we are the Rangers who are going nowhere for the next few years.

Thanks for taking the time to read it Jerry_dog. Actually, I've often wondered if Larry Robinson was ever approached via the back door about returning to Montreal. Something tells me he wasn't as it would mean either Rick Green or Guy Carbonneau would have to take a walk. Though I hear Carbonneau's name come up now and then. It's usually in the same sentence as "Dallas and headcoach" yadda, yadda, yadda. I've often felt we've never been able to replace the leadership he provided when he left. Kirk Muller was an excellent choice for sure, but when Turgeon became available; well it cost the Islander GM his job as a result. Still, I think we may have missed the "Good-boat-PR" on that one. I don't know if bringing Serge Savard as an advisor to Gillette would work or not. It may encroach on Boivin's responsibilities a bit; wait a minute! That wouldn't be so bad. Sure, bring in Savard to handle Boivin's job. He seems to be keeping a very low profile these days. Serge Savard as president of hockey operations would be another good PR move. Now would he stay out of André's area? hmmmm When you talk of the '93 Cup winner it brings back too many memories. When Demers asked in the dressing room, "who's going to cover Gretzky?" it was Carbonneau who immediately picked up the gaunlet. Roy was unbeatable; 10 overtime wins; the McSorley "stick-call" it just goes on and on. But the Habs and Kings had some luck that year as well. Gretzky prevented a Habs/Leafs matchup after not getting called for highsticking Doug Gilmour. On the Habs side, the Islanders took out Pittsburgh, yadda, yadda, yadda .... I'd better stop there or I'll be here all night. Cheers.

Thanks, Pete. As I was saying to habby it was rather fun just banging it out last night. As you can see there's the odd spelling error, because I was a bit tired and didn't really check it over all that well. Honestly, Pete, I honestly thought Doug Gilmour was just brought in to fill a double-void until Saku returned. Then he would have gotten the old heave-ho. The leadership void was something we never really filled. We had different players pick up the gaunlet from time to time, but no consistency. The center position void we filled as well, but I thought Gilmour would have be delegated to the 4th line where his tired old bones would hold out better in the 10-or-less minutes of ice time he'd receive. Boy was I wrong ! Now that Gilmour is playing well and Saku is set to come back, what do we do? Putting Perreault on the wing is disasterous. We shouldn't touch the Juneau-line IMHO. With very few exeptions, Juneau, Dackell and Bulis can keep up with just about any 1st line in the league. Besides, how do you substantiate paying the kind of coin we are to Perreault just to drop him to the 3rd line? Moreover, he's just not a checking center. As Keith pointed out, Van Allen is doing the job just fine on the 4th line. I don't know how, but I'd like to see Saku back on the 2nd line where he doesn't have to face the opposition's top checking trio. How? I don't know. Thanks again, Pete. Cheers.
