"Scotty Bowman (then the Canadiens' eastern director of amateur scouting) came down and watched me play in a pickup game on a Sunday afternoon," Pleau recalled. "Then we went to my house and he asked my parents if it was all right if I went to play junior hockey in Montreal. I didn't even know what that was, but I always loved hockey and decided to go. My mom accompanied me and when we landed at the Montreal airport, Scotty and Cliff Fletcher picked me up and took me to meet Mr. Selke. He could barely see over the table but I remember he told me, "I hope your career works out as well as Ralph Backstrom's." Pleau attended a small, private school in Montreal [LCC I'll bet - M. B-E], Notre Dame de Grace, and played on its Jr. B team. They made the playoffs and lost their first three games. Their coach was replaced by Bowman and they won their next game, and the next, and the next ... "We won four series in a row, played another 35 games and went to the Memorial Cup semifinals," Pleau recalled. "That was a huge time in my hockey career. It's unbelievable what I learned in those 35 games." - www.nhl.com/intheslot/read/features/pleau_qa102104.html
