Jeff Hackett: Team player right to the end.
From Slam:
MONTREAL (CP) -- Canadiens goaltender Jeff Hackett and his family left Thursday for their off-season home in London, Ont., and Hackett is scheduled to undergo surgery on his left shoulder next Wednesday.
Hackett has dislocated that shoulder twice this season and after his latest injury on March 6, had originally decided against surgery despite suggestions from team doctors that without surgery, it may pop out again.
Hackett didn't want to end his season while the Habs were in pursuit of a playoff berth.
"I wanted to try and be there if something happened to Jose (Theodore) . . . see if I could be of any help," Hackett told the Montreal Gazette.
But the Canadiens' acquisition of goaltender Stephane Fiset at Tuesday's trading deadline put a new face on Hackett's original decision.
"As soon as that happened, I made a decision that's best for my career ... best for Jeff Hackett," said Hackett.
"Having the surgery in London means that I won't have to fly back and forth between there and Montreal. It's good for everybody . . . for my family and for the Canadiens' medical staff. Right now, our doctors and training staff have 21 other guys to worry about."

Good for Hack. I feel bad for the guy, as he's suffered from some aweful luck over the past couple of seasons. Through it all, he's maintained a positive team attitude. According to Gilmour, he's been one of the hardest working guys in practice. That's a great message for the young players: things might not always go your way, but it's important to work hard, stay positive, and be ready for your next opportunity. In this situation, he was prepared to forego surgery in hopes of contributing should he be needed down the stretch.
