I don't think "call me Bob" has lost his mind. He is, however, in the process of expanding it pharmaceutically. Actually, I have a fairly good good idea of where his head is at and he has a really good view of his pancreas! ;D

remember that it's a soft draft and the Caps don't know how to draft anyway.

Bobby Clarke seems to have fallen for the Milbury/Keenan phenomenon - overpaying drastically for that one guy he really, really wants.
And talk about overpaying. Ouch....

OK, before we call Clarke an idiot...let's remember this:
Jeremy Roenick almost had his knee ripped out last night. He says he will be ready for the playoffs and blah, blah, blah...apparently, he has a slight tear of his ACL and a bunch of other injuries in there.
They also lost Primeau(who has had a mediocre year) with that rib problem again.
John LeClair and Mark Recchi have not developped any chemistry with Primeau...Oates could be what gets LeClair and Recchi going.Or he could fill in with Gagné and Williams.Their PP has been TERRIBLE this year, Oates can help them there.
BUT, if JR is OK, same thing for Primeau, this deal is a F'ING JOKE!
They already have one of the deepest center stables in the league(Roenick, Primeau, Dopita, Murray,etc)..adding a guy like Oates won't change much...unless they can convince one of them to go to the wing(yeah like Roenick will go to the wing..)
AND they gave up their potential superstar goalie(Ouellete) and their first 3 picks in this year's draft...I guess they see the future in Boucher or that Finn guy Nietemaky....

remember that it's a soft draft and the Caps don't know how to draft anyway. They know have 3 first rounders And why do they need Ouellete with Kolzig who just signed long term last summer? I think we are about to see a major overhaul of the Washington franchise, folks.

Ouellet is 10 years younger than Kolzig - you need to have a kid in the system.... this is like Théodore who was drafted 10 years after Roy. By the time Theo steps up (ie, now) the veteran (Roy) is on his way out. Ouellet will take a while to develop, Kolzig gives him that time.

I can't confirm this but somebody on radio last night said that Phily had 8 picks in the first 3 rounds if so they still have 5 and is it possible that some of those 2 nd and 3rd are conditional on Oates siging extention

But Kolzig signed for something like 5 years this summer...Ouellette will be like 25-26 by the time he could become their #1 goalie...I think he will be ready way before that. So there might be a season or two where both can play, it'll just force Ouellet to develop better and be the best he can be. It's like Hack and Theo - only in this case there's a bit more of a difference in age. As the vet ages the kid is more and more ready to step in. If ever both are very capable #1's then the Caps move one.... I just don't see a problem here. After all, Theo is 25 now, and it's only now that he's really ready for prime time.... maybe a season or two ago he could have done it as we all know, but having to really, truly earn that starting role only makes a goalie better - Theo and Roy are good examples.... Guys who are just handed the #1 slot usually don't develop as well. Just look at Thibault until he had Moog to push him :-)

Looks like Clarkie is pulling out all the stops to win it all IF that is the case, why doesn't he go out once and for all and get a proven, stanley cup winner in goal? why not sacrifice Ouellet to get a guy like that?
