And they wouldn't give up Mike York.
Call me crazy, but this is awesome news for the Habs. The last thing the Rangers need is a one dimensional cherry picker. They already have Rucinsky and Nedved...why add another one?? and for years the Rangers have gone with big names, big salaries and veteran players...what has it given? NOTHING.
The Rangers are pretty good offensively, they are horrible defensively, the last thing they need is a guy who doesn't give a crap about defence playing 30 minutes per game...
Thoughts?

Holy sh*t
TSN has learned that the Florida Panthers have sent Pavel Bure to the New York Rangers for Filip Novak, Igor Ulanov, a first round pick in 2002, a fourth round pick in 2003 and a switch of second round picks in 2003.
I can't believe Sather was able to get rid of Ulanov.Novak is a great prospect and that 1st rounder could be a top 15 pick, but man I thought they would get at least one solid young forward...

If that is the deal then it sounds like a good trade for New York. Once you get pass the first 8-10 picks in the draft this year the talent level drops off significantly. Ulanov is junk and I don't know that much about the prospects. But we all know how many prospect pan out.
Bad defense or not Bure scored 58 goals in the NHL just two years ago.

Talent for talent, it's a steal. But Bure is like Jagr...there attitude is the problem. No one denies their immense talent. On top of that, it's not like the Rangers 'desperately' need offense.

I think it's great news for the Habs! Now the rangers will want to win 8 - 7 in every game and they'll end up losing most of them. Bure is a great offensive player but they needed defense not offense. I wonder how Sandy McCarthy is going to like his reduced playing time after he's contributed so much down the stretch!
I don't wish ill will on anyone but I'd love to see Bure get injured in one of the first games, just to let the league know it's not how much money you spend, it's how you spend it!

This reminds me soooooooo much of the Jagr deal. Now, everyone is on the Rangers bandwagon saying they will make the playoffs and blah, blah, blah...let's wait and see...the games are played on the ice, not on paper.

Amazing deal for the Rags. No matter how you slice it, Bure is an All-Star player and they acquired him for a dmen that cleared waiver, a middle of the pack prospect and some picks in a relatively slim draft.
I don't believe the Rangers really needed Bure but who wouldn't want him for the price they paid...
Now they just have to rid themselves of the team distraction that is Fleury and they'll be set with a very nice team.
70 mil payroll...
Yikes!

Well, Novak is probably not 'middle of the pack' he is probably a B prospect and maybe better, but still the Cats got hosed. Just think of it, they gave away Jovo,Mike Brown and Kevin Weekes for Bure...all because Huizenga wanted a star.See what happens when owners put their nose in places they shouldn't?

And we play Florida twice less Bure + Ulanov Call me crazy, this could be a good thing for the Panthers. They could go back to their defensive system they had in the mid 90's and with Luongo in goal, they can win any game. They won't have a choice now to play the trap...Luongo would certainly love facing 25 shots instead of 40 shots per game(sounds familiar?)

LOL I was so happy to hear the Rangers picked up Bure. What a frigged up dressing room that is. You've got the monster egos of Messier, Lindros, Fleury, and Bure all in the same room!
You've really got to feel for guys like Leetch, and York. Leetch is on the decline, but York needs to get out of NY fast. What a poisonous place that is. If players go to Tampa to retire, they go to NY to lose any sense of team and lose their skills.
The Rangers will beat themselves, don't even worry about them. This is our playoff spot to lose. The only way we don't make it is if we play like crap.

What a horrible deal for Florida. They gave up a superstar talent, and got no immediate help in return. They should have picked up an established young player, to help the team now, and build around for the future: a Chris Drury, or Mike York. I would think that Bure would be worth one of those players and a pick or two. There's no guarantee that they'll end up with anything of value out of this. Looks like a Reggie Houle deal to me.. except Reggie probably would have added a throw in player or two.
