Just in time to trade him.
So much for the 5 million dollar man. I wondered if he wanted to get out of Montreal so bad that he was willing to take less. OR, he realized he was dreaming, OR he thought, "but I love Koivu" was going to woo Savard to open the vaults.
Whatever. Bygones.

I have mixed feeling on this one.
Yes, we save a draft pick.
OMG, would he have taken the same cash to stay in Montreal? remember how Savard didn't want to offer him the same deal Brisebois got? Phoenix just got Savage for about 500-700K less per year.

Savage may love Koivu, however, even at $700K less per year he will put considerably more in the bank as a result of our wonderful tax structure North of the 49th. After as many years as he has been with us, Savage, regardless of injuries, never showed us better than 60% of his potential. Having said that, had he been Mr. March/April rather than Mr. October I may be missing him more ....... NAH!!

Wohoo! Welcome back draft pick. Now, do we need to give another pick up if we resign Berezin? I seem to recollect TSN reporting that. If so, I wonder if Savard might not make an offer to Berezin if he doesn't produce this year, or at the very least not give him too high an offer. Interesting.

What if we don't offer a qualifying offer to Berezin, but he opts to re-sign with us for something like a million per year? do we still have to cough up a draft pick.

If we don't make him a qualifying offer he becomes UFA, I believe. Now why would we fail to make him an offer. It only has to be 10% more than his current number (2.8). The question is whether signing him to a one year deal on the basis of a qualifying offer triggers the obligation to ship another pick to Phoenix. I understood the deal to be that another pick would go to Phoenix if Berezin signed "long term". I don't think one year qualifies as "long term". It was a strange deal. To me, Savage and a third for Berezin would've been fair, with a conditional (5th round) pick to Phoenix if Savage walked. That should've been more than enough. I consider it pure good fortune that he signed with the Coyotes, cause another pick going their way would've stunk. I know Berezin being a RFA rather than an UFA makes a difference, but that difference to me is fairly valued at a 3rd round pick. He hasn't exactly burned up the scoresheet over the last couple of seasons.

JV, let me re-phrase what I said: IF we don't offer him a Q offer and when he becomes a UFA, we re-sign him for alot less cash.Would we still give up a pick?

I would say "yes". Almost definitely. I would be very surprised if the deal with Phoenix makes any distinction between a contract extension or a new contract. If we re-sign him we send a pick. Having said that, it's possible that the "future considerations" in the deal are tied to the possibility of Berezin signing with the Habs, and that the Coyotes would get nothing extra of any great value if we sign Sergei. I say that because otherwise there were as many as four picks going to Phoenix depending on what happened, which of course would have been ridiculous:
There was the 3rd rounder we sent (either this year or next, at Phoenix's option);
There was the 4th rounder if Savage walked at the end of the year;
There was the compensatory pick from the league (say a 3rd rounder); and
There was a further pick if Montreal signed Berezin.
In addition, I heard talk of a compensatory pick from Mtl to Phoenix if Savage re-signed with Montreal, and of course there were the "futures" that were not specified.
All of this can't be right, IMO, because it's just way too much (potentially) for Berezin. I mean, it's just nuts. Some of it must be wrong, but I don't know which parts.

i know i risk sounding naïve by doing this, but here's the official press release -
--
Canadiens acquire forward Sergei Berezin from the Phoenix Coyotes
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Montreal (01/25/2002) IN RETURN FOR BRIAN SAVAGE AND A 3RD ROUND PICK IN 2002 OR 2003.
Montreal Canadiens General Manager, André Savard, announced tonight the acquisition of forward Sergei Berezin, in return for Brian Savage and the Canadiens’ 3rd round pick in 2002 or 2003 (at Phoenix’s option).
--
could it just be as simple as that?

This signing kind of surprises me. As I read on here that Savage was not working out in Phoenix and by signing Savage the 'Yotes give up two draft choices. Gretzky must be sastified with Brian's play. But I still expect Savage to be dealt next season.
But it is good for us!
I remember the original deal saying we get a third rounder from Phoenix if we don't resign Berezin. So, maybe we could get that back too?
I knew right off the bat Berezin was not a player for Montreal. Not because of his defensive ability but because he is selfish and not really a great finisher. If we have to give him 3 million a year I hope Andre passes

No offence, but that is hilarious.The Oilers and Islanders are working on a deal that would send Poti, Carter for Isbister, Scatchard and Mezei.You think we could get Isbister for Berezin and Rivet? dream on...
