My oldest daughter from time to time comes and watches the games with me,I think just for the entertainment value. She sometines gives me that look "man my Dads really bent its only a hockey game.Anyways she asked me a question the other day and one of Docs posts reminded me of it. She asked who my favorite player was?Sadly I could not give her a quick answer I really had to think of it. The obvious ones are Saku and Theodore but I wanted to let the names flow off my toungue like Lafleur or Cournoyer Shutt Robinson.Anyways you get the picture. Are there many more like me and if there is we truly are fanatics. How many people have the passion for a team without a favorite player. My guess is the majority of them are now Colorado fans.

Well now, it was Dainius Zubrus until the "trade" of last season., but on this year's edition it is hands down Oleg Petrov. In fact I've been very keen on the little sparkplug since the Val Bure days. One would be hard-pressed to single out a game this season where he hadn't given his all. Just imagine the point totals this guy may have amassed on a more talented team playing alongside a big center. Fleury-type points would be my guess.
As far as all-time favourite, well, that would be none other than the "Flower". Yep, that once often maligned, outspoken, Quebec separist preaching, Saperlipopette-disturbing, bar-hopping, four-pack-a-day smokin', Cadillac-destroying, ear-severing, drunk-driving, "I wanna play my way Jacques" screaming, demi-god, Guy Lafleur.
Yep, for all those Pavel Bure nay-sayers, there's no room on this powerhouse team for a player like this. Is there?
Great poll Phil!

Kind of a tricky question.
Among the HABS the closest thing I have to a favorite is Donald Audette. He's my favorite HABS but isn't my favorite player.
Recent favorite players for me were:
Turgeon Damphousse Zubrus
I must jinx them...

(just don't, you know, love him). No one player really stands out on this team. I'd go with Andrei Markov I guess, but even then its not all that fanatical. Jose Theodore by default, I guess. We really do have a bland team.

My favorite player is also Oleg Petrov, for now anyways but when Audette returns it might change...
Favorite Habs in recent Years...
Pierre Turgeon Saku Koivu Kirk Muller.

Pierre Turgeon Saku Koivu Kirk Muller. Zubrus is (was) high on our lists for the obvious reasons that he showed flashes of GREAT potential. He has the size, youth, speed, and hands to be a dominant player. Trouble is, he always seems to be one step behind in the consistancy department. I, at one time, was very fond of Stephane Richer. He had seasons of brilliance. He kinda reminded me of Stephane, but certainly not as flashy. I still think Zubrus will be a very good and productive player in this league. Always have. And when he does, it will hurt. Alot! CO

I agree CO.
And the hits... The guy can use his body, he's got tremendous balance. Remeber the check that sent Pilon to the clinic a couple years back... Patow! He also seem to have a bit of mean streak...
Zubrus is right now working on being a good 2 way forward, which at the very worst he will be. But my guess is that by being effective in a lesser role, he will gain confidence and take the next step.

I'm leaning towards Petrov as well. For a little guy, he's pretty strong on the puck, and always skates his butt off.
Some of my favorite Habs over the years have been: Koivu, Muller, Damphousse, and Keane. Unfortunatley I was too young to have followed the Habs during their glory years, though I do have a vivid memory of my Grandfather, sometime in the 80ies, telling me: "The Canadiens defense is pitiful these days. All they have now is this Chelios guy".

My favorite player is Saku.
I also love Theodore, Zednik, Markov and now Hossa.
By the way, CO and Doc, I also loved Zubrus, but the more I see him play, the more I think he is gonna dissapoint for the rest of his career. He has all the tools, should have been a star, but not playing junior hockey or in the AHL really hurt him IMO.He just had everything made once he was drafted.Blame the Flyers for this.

I'm going to step out on a limb here and say my favorite is Gilmour. Although he had a rocky start, since mid-December he's been putting up decent numbers. He's also provided this club with leadership and is one of the few who has stood up for himself or anyone else on the ice(i.e. taking down Varada after he'd ran Theo over). Plus, IMO, Dougie, Petrov and Jose are the only ones on this team who day-in-and-day-out seem to show up to play and not just to collect their bloated paychecks.

I love Petrov's hustle. I met him in Edmonton during his first tour with the Habs and stifled a laugh because he was so small (standing in an elevator next to Brashear, he looked even smaller!) He was, not surprisingly, the hardest working Hab that night. I told him he played a great game. Brashear laughed and told me Oleg didn't speak English. Petrov looked at me and said "thank you" in a heavy Russian accent. Very cool.
My past favourites include Lafleur, Robinson and Dryden. My all-time fave is a toss-up between Patrick Roy and Guy Lafleur. No one on earth has ever played a playoff game like St Patrick. No one was as exciting as the Flower.
Spiro, the big difference between Guy and Pavel Bure is that Lafleur actually thought about his teammates before his own personal statistics. His teammates also liked him. Pavel's, for the most part, do not.

I am hugely disappointed that none of you selected Martin Rucinsky. Great hands, brilliant vision, skated like the wind. Feared by all on the ice, great leader. My God, the guy brings so many attributes to the game it makes one wonder why he is not thought off as the uber-superstar he really is.
Martin Rucinsky.
Martin.
If you can excuse me now, I need to go hurt myself.

I don't deny his immense talent, I question his willingness to play through pain and his willingness to do anything to win.Too many times he played like he couldn't care less.

It takes me too long to think who my favourite is, which means I must not have one.
After a couple minutes I come back to Rivet though. Theo, Zed, and Oleg get honourable mention.
In recent history my favourite Habs have been Roy, then Odelein, and lastly Scotty Thornton...damnit I miss Thornton.

Wierd, only 17 votes from a BB full of dedicated Habs freaks. Looks like the membership is about as apathetic as some of the habs players are.
Surely, there must be somebody you like? Gilmor, Zednik, Petrov play their hearts out most of the time. Theo stands on his head and suspends himself in mid air. Even Brisebois plays well, guts it out with a bad foot.
Sheesh!
