this is hardly news, but i have to get it off my chest. in 8 games since the olympics we have outshot a team only once. we hit the atlanta goalie 30 times [26 against] for our highest number of shots in this stretch.
on average over these 8 games we have been outshot 33.9-22.6.
are our players testing some type of new limp hockey stick? or are our coaches mimicking the life preservation strategy of the tortoise when drawing up their game plans? or are our players just that bad? inquiring minds want to know.
as my high school soccer coach, a german, used to exhort our pathetic team decades ago - shoot! shoot! vun in 15 go in!
hmm...assuming an average goalie has a save percentage of .900, let's do the following calculation - 22.6 [average shots over last 8 games] x .100 [assumed goals allowed percentage for an average goalie] = 2.26 goals scored.
so, how many of our remaining games will we win by scoring 2 goals a game? that does appear to be the trend, does it not?

42 shots on goal + 19 shots directed at the net + 21 shots blocked by habs d-men = 82 attempts to score by the stars.
respective numbers for the habs were - 21 + 10 + 12 = 43 attempts to score.
the puck was in the habs end 44% of game time. in the stars end 34%.
we basically look like we step onto the ice ready to protect a scoreless tie. we don't even accomplish that. i hope this style of play is an aberration inspired by the promise to make the playoffs this year. if it goes beyond that i pity the young talent coming up through the system.

I don't think that those stats are an abberation. The most recent season count I saw was something like being outshot in 51 of 66 games. Also, I've been keeping an eye on the time in zone stat all year and it's pretty well always in the other team's favour and by a significant amount.
Pretty hard to win games consistently when that's going on. It also reflects what we all know and that is that this team can't protect a lead.

Yeah, the zone time stat RDS features is awesome. We see that the Habs spend 2-3-4 minutes more in their zone than they do in the other team's zone per period!!!
