Ok, This may be waaaaaaaaaaaayy out there. Don't kill me. LOL With Hackett going down for the rest of the season, do we pick up Mike Vernon, who just went on waivers today? Just as a reliable back up for Theo, going into the playoffs? Thoughts?

noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!
He hasn't seen enough action here in Calgary to be reliable. He's been on waivers before this year and no one has tried to pick him up. I don't think anyone will this time, either.

Actually it ain't a bad idea. I wouldn't trade anything for a goalie but pick one off waivers? Why not.
Vernon's salary is almost all paid for and he doesn't have a contract that we would have to carry past this season. Obviously the point wouldn't be to actually play him but just to sit him there and let Theo do the work. Vernon oozes with playoffs experience and could be a reassuring presence. He could give Theo some interesting pointers and a veteran like him is certainly a plus in a dressing room. Garon could stay in the AHL, complete his strong season and gain valuable experience by taking his team to the Calder cup.
It's a no risk move that could only help.

I agree with Doc. What have we got to lose? Its not like Vernon is going to play or anything. Much better to have him sitting on the bench than Mathieu Garon, no?
Heck, the New Jersey Devils brought John Vanbiesbrouck back to cheer on Marty Broduer, why can't we do the same with Vernon? We get a veteran presence for the dressing room, Garon gets to keep playing in the minors as opposed to getting fat on the bench, he doesn't cost anything in a trade and he doesn't cost much money wise. Besides, if he has to come in on an emergency, Theo-is-getting-shelled night, who knows? Maybe he can pull one or two more good performances out of his hat.
Doesn't seem like a bad idea to me.

I am split on this one.Vernon has sucked all year and has played 2 great games(against Detroit and against SJ) aside from these games, he has been terrible.
But, he is available for nothing and his salary is minimal for the rest of the year.
Tough call.

So, we pick him up off waivers and if he doesn't look like he wants to be here, isn't a positive influence on Theo and the room or just plain sucks in practice then he's waived again. Besides, we beat him in '86 and he beat us in '89 and maybe he just needs to pick up a bit of the 'back in Montreal' vibe to get his "A" or, for a short term if required, "AA" game back. As Doc said, it's a no risk / can't lose.
p.s. Vernon's stature fits in nicely with our smurf look (skilled and speedy smurfs albeit!)

I am pretty sure Vernon will be thrilled to go to any team that is in a playoff race and a team that will use him.Calgary is in the race, but 'Vernie' will not see the net again for the rest of the year IMO.They will ride Turek till he is exhausted.

A Calgary was on here before and said the Flames were looking for a goal scorer down the stretch. I wonder if they would do Berezin for Reghr? We could take on Vernon's salary as part of that deal.
We are small and soft on defense, Reghr is a young, strong defenseman that we could use. We then could deal Rivet for a couple of picks(#2,#3). Which we could deal at the draft table when picks fetch much more

Gnick, that would be grand theft.
I think Regehr will only be dealt for offense in his age group.Guys like Nagy or Kraft.
By the way, Vernon was sent to the AHL today.

Flames send veteran goalie Mike Vernon to minors
March 9, 2002
CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -- The Calgary Flames sent veteran goalie Mike Vernon down to the AHL on Saturday and recalled another veteran, Kay Whitmore, to take his place.
Vernon is in the final year of a contract that pays him $2.75 million and can become an unrestricted free agent after this season.
The Flames placed him on waivers for the second time in just over a month, but he cleared at noon on Saturday enabling them to send Vernon down to Saint John.

2.75 million for Vernon? ...wow, now I see where the Flames found the cash to re-sign Turek and are saying they can re-sign Iginla. They also have Kravchuk(2-2.5 million $) becoming a UFA this summer. That's a heck of alot of bacon on a #6 d-man and a goalie now in the minors.
