With Hackett announced to start agaisnt the Bruins TSN have speculated again about the Habs trading him. This time it's to TO or to the Blues for a puck moving dman. Names mentioned were Jyrki Lumme from TO or Mike Van Ryn from St Louis. To begin with you can see their argument for a puck moving dman. How many times has the Habs inability to clear their zone ended up in a goal and this chip it along the boards approach often ends up in a turnover and the puck coming right back in.
As to the specifics, I sure hope it's not Lumme who's 35, going on 36. Their reasoning is that the Habs will want someone to help them get to the playoffs this year but somehow I can't see Savard doing this. Van Ryn, on the other hand, is more interesting: 6' 1", 190 lbs, soon to be 23. If this were to happen I wonder if it would involve several players, with the Habs sending one of their dmen back.
A team not mentioned in the article is the Flyers. Chechmanek sprained his ankle agaisnt the Rangers on Saturday. Boucher started and won against the Bruins 4-1, however, so there might not be much interest here. No word on when Chechmanek is due back. You've got to wonder about how confident the Flyers are, tho, given the less than stirling goaltending in last year's playoffs.
As others have noted there are others than Hackett available. On the other hand, the list of experienced goalies that might improve a team's goaltending in the playoffs or might realistically substitute for a missing starting goalie, such as Joseph, would be considerably shorter than a 'fill in goalie' list, so here's hoping Hackett's on it. I know some are in favour of keeping Hackett on hand to back up Theo and there's a strong argument for that. But I'm always in favor of more options rather than less and if a move could improve the Habs in the future then I'd argue in favor of accepting the risks of trading Hackett. For example I'd be against Hack for Lumme but for Hack for Van Ryn.
Anyway, just some thoughts. I'm sure the rumors will contimue to fly as long as Joseph is out and any contending team appears to have goaltending problems. It will be an interesting two weeks and a bit until the deadline.
