Hey, How are you ? Good point. You are probably right , BUT..... George said when he bought the team that he was going to spend smoe bucks. This may be the chance to back up those words. If not Guerin, maybe Amonte? Or, the freeagent I think they will pursue, Teemu Selanne. Just a thought . Cheers habits

Come to think of it.IF we can find a taker for Hackett,non-tender Berezin and have Gilmour retire. We could be well on our way to getting a big name UFA.Hackett leaving would free up close to 4 million(assuming someone pays his whole salary),non-tendering Berezin would save 2-3 million(we wouldn't need anymore if we signed a Guerin or a Amonte or a Selanne),Gilmour retiring would save 1.8 million.Add those figures up...and voila! enough money to get some UFA's interested...

I like your thinking Lets just hope management is thinking the same thing. Cheers habits Well, let's hope management sees the salaries Traverse,Odjick,Poulin and Darby will be commanding and realises these 4 players who will probably not play a single game for us next year, will be making somewhere between 2-3 million$ together because they are all signed to NHL contracts. Imagine what we could do with that money along with the money we could be freeing up over the next few weeks and months. Anyways..imagine a first line of Zednik-Koivu-Guerin or Amonte... ;D ;D

Unfortunately with the CBA up for review in '04 we're going to see the outrageous demands by players in hopes they beat it to the deadline. The unfortunate part is that most of the players in Guerin's caliber know that there is an owner out there who will pay out the bucks, citing "... it's a business move designed to move us closer to the Cup..."
Another player who can pretty well ride this wave is Teemu Selanne. I'll be very surprised if he lands in Montreal. Firstly, he'll have to deal with the federal/provincial tax issues. Secondly, I don't think George Gillett will shell out the type of money Selanne will demand. Why? Because Selanne's services will be desired by a great many, often wealthier teams south of the boarder.
Don't get me wrong, Marc, you know this is the guy I would like to see in Montreal before all others, but I'm betting he'll stay in the USA where he pays minimal taxes and can find sun and warmth the year-round. Besides, Selanne will get the money he wants in the USA.
Coming full circle on you, I think it's a case of getting in under the wire. We can expect much, much more of this type of unreasonable demand Guerin is asking for. Can you imagine if he get's it. Heck, they traded Gretzky I guess. '04 isn't too far away. Cheers.

It's not quite as simple as being able to make a competetive offer, however. We saw last year that the likes of Lapointe and Hull opted to go to US contenders even though we'd made similar offers.
I'd say we have 0% chance of landing Guerin. He'll want a 9mill type offer, and a good chance at a cup, without having to pay Canadian income tax. That narrows it down to the usual suspects: Colorado, Dallas, Philly, St. Louis, NYR, Det.
I think they should take a look at players like: Selanne, Lang, Holik, Hedican, and Slegr.

Sorry to rain on everyone's parade, but I predict we'll see a summer just like last year..... that is the Habs in the hunt for some big name UFAs but coming up just short. The main reason is the "perception" that Montreal is not close to being a serious contender yet. It doesn't matter how much salary Savard can free up. Remember Brett Hull? He gave up a few bucks in exchange for a legitimate shot at the Cup. I for one won't be holding my breath waiting for a Guerin or Amonte etc. signing here. It'll be another round of "second level" signings for us. At least these signings will hopefully place even more NHL depth on the roster and relegate Traverse and a few others where they belong..... AHL. Once again, I apologise for the "slap" of reality. I hope I'm proven wrong, but I don't see us as an overly attractive choice for the "elite" UFAs...... YET!! We're getting there. Patience is the key. I have faith in Andre Savard.

On the bright side,if we don't sign a big name UFA,that will mean kids like Hossa will get the chance to make the team and I have no problem with that.
