American Women's Hockey team captain, Cammi Granato addressed the Canadian-flag-on-the-floor issue on Jim Rome's radio show, The Jungle, earlier today. Granato adamantly denied the incident ever happening and went on to say, that as Americans they (the women's hockey team) know how much national flags mean to other countries (or words to that affect anyway). If true, then the allegations of impropriety are just that; allegations. I was also told by some of the lads at work that the American coach offered comments to CBC, detailing explicit instructions for his players not to step on the Canadian flag out of respect for Canada. Though I did hear these comments echoed from CBC Olympic host, Brian Williams, I didn't hear it from the American coach directly. Therefore, I am also willing to concede that these comments must have been allegations as well.
If this is true, I'd like to say to our American posters and/or visitors to the board, to publicly apologize for any offence I may have caused any of you. You may have noticed that Canadians do not flag-wave with any consistency, as it's simply just not our way. But my intent wasn't to lash out at our neighbours to the south, but rather to defend the integrity of Canada's colours. This is something I've paid to do for 22 years now.
It is also important to mention, that though the board's administrator, Clear Observer, promotes freedom of speech my comments were not a direct reflection of his opinions or the HabsRus community.
If these allegations are unsubstantiated please accept my apologies with humility and sincerity. Cheers.

And Bob Nicholson said on the Team that they still have every reason to believe the flag was on the floor.

Uh...oh, somebody was fibbing! This speaks bad for Hayley Wichenheiser who went on national TV and spoke about the issue.
Personally, I think the flag was on the floor. I saw a interview a few days after the game and some of the American women were saying they were careful not to step on the flag. So, it must have been on the floor.
Sounds like Granato is trying to down play the issue.

And Bob Nicholson said on the Team that they still have every reason to believe the flag was on the floor. No disrespect to you or anyone else or the Canadian Flag, but can we let it rest? You guys know how I feel about Canada and I think you know I was rooting for Mens Team Canada all along, but ill feelings need to be put to rest. I think the real truth lies somewhere between what Cammie said and what Hayley said. I don't think we will ever know the real truth but I really don't think it is as bad as what Hayley said. I may make all of you mad with this one. It isn't my intention, I promise you, but it is something I've been wondering about every since the "Flag on the floor" incident. To my knowledge the two times something negative has been said about Women's Team USA by someone on Women's Team Canada, came after their Gold Medal game at the Olympics in 1998 and now after the Gold Medal game this time. Both times it was Hayley. Could she have a beef with our team for some reason and states things all out of proportion because she may have a beef with our women's team?

I'm with you Pam. Whatever happened, let's move on. After awhile this "she said, he said" stuff just gets tiresome.
Anyway, I was never that keen on a maple leaf. It's so...wishy washy wimpy. And of course central canadian. And with no sense of history. Doesn't relate to anything. So typically, well Canadian. Just like Marge said about Toronto, it's so..bland. Yuck.
Even a beaver would have been better- at least it's got teeth. Or a Polar Bear, now there's something with some character. But a leaf that gets all wet and mushy and then turns into...compost?

I'm with you guys. It's time to put this issue to rest. So they put our flag on the floor!
It was done to motivate their team with no malicious intention towards Canada. It has been blowed out of proportion!

Nothing I ever posted in regard to this was meant to be disrespectful to any of you, any other Canadians, or the Canadian Flag. It just gets to the point of being beaten to death and as you said, "he said, she said." At some point we must move on. It got tiresome for me to keep hearing it.

It has been blowed out of proportion! GNick, thank you to you too. I've stayed away from HabsRus for a couple of reasons, but one of them was definitely this issue. I didn't like to see my friends angry or hurt over this incident. It made me very unhappy. Due to the fact I'm trying to get my new board going strong and making changes to it, the Olympics, job hunting and then the uproar of the Canadian Flag, it all kept me away.

Pam,
One thing that I have learned is not to take these message boards seriously. There are a lot of people on here just to stir things up. You shouldn't stay away just because of the flag issue. As usual, it has been blowed way out of proportion.
Up here, we heard more about the Gretzky speech and lousy refereeing in the women's final than we did the flag issue. Nobody took it seriously and most just fetched a laugh over it. The Yanks just overlooked and made a simple mistake while trying to motivate their team. Nobody up here was angry or hurt

Nobody up here was angry or hurt Again, thank you GNick. It's because of Habs fans like CO, BC, Doc, Dis, and you that I so enjoy HabsRus so much. I was just afraid of being used as a dart board. I didn't want that to happen. It's easy for a Californian to say she understands, but harder for anyone who hasn't met me to believe me. I've been fortunate enough to not only meet, but be friends with both, CO and Dis, so they know when I say something like that it comes from the heart. But no one else on HabsRus has met me so they only have my word on it when I say some of the things I do. To me, friendship comes before whatever team a fan likes. If I'm friends with a fan of a rival team, I might be a rival, but my friendship is more important to me than whether my friend likes a rival team or not. I carry that over to the Olympics. I might be a native of the US but my feelings are still the same.

Yeah...it is time for Canada and the U.S. to pull together and not pull apart. Looks like we both are headed for a long, lenghty war that will span many countries. Unity is what our countries both need right now.

Unity is what our countries both need right now. Later Believe it or not, there are a lot of US citizens who like and respect Canada and Canadians. Many of them were overwhelmed with gratitude Canada and Canadians gave us after September 11. I think there are many US citizens whou would love to unite with Canada. As for me, I've been joined from my heart with Canada for a long time. Even though I only started visiting Canada in December 1998, and became friends with CO and Dis in 2000, as I was growing up I had a fascination with Canada. I guess I've had a life long love affair with Canada and the Leafs just brought it to light. As far as I am concerned, I'm already united with Canada.
