Found this on the hockeytraderumous site. Judge for yourselves but I love this deal. We get a good young defenseman and a #1 pick along with a backup for Theodore. Anaheim gets youth and saves some money.
"It was only a brief conversation a few weeks ago with the
ducks when Montreal GM Andre
Savard inquired about the possibility
of trading for Paul Kariya. The deal
was reportedly for Brian Savage,
Sheldon Souray and Jeff Hackett and
a conditional draft pick in the 2004
draft. And as expected, the discussions never got to the
point where Montreal was actually going to acquire a 9-10
million dollar player.
However, it seems that Mr. Savard had more than Kariya
on his mind. It seems that the Montreal GM is on the
verge of pulling a major "blockbuster" deal with the ducks.
It's very well known to any and every Habs fan that
Montreal is weak on scoring when it comes to the D and
they need an offensive D to help players like Brisebois
and Markov who are the team's only offensive
Defensemen. Using Juneau at the point isn't the solution,
it's a remedy for the time being. Hence, it appears that the
Habs are looking to deal for Oleg Tverdovsky, Steve
Shields and a 1st round pick from the Mighty Ducks of
Anaheim. But, the deal would see the habs have to part
with some good young players, Mathieu Garon, Sheldon
Souray, Mike Ribeiro and a 2nd or 3rd round pick.
With the Habs in the hunt for the last playoff spot and their
need for some offensive upside from the D, this trade
could be a good investment for the habs.
I'm sure that some die hard Habs fans are thinking is this
guy crazy, how could you give up so much youth?
However, to acquire a 26 year old offensive D will surely
help the team in the scoring, it'll elevate the pressure put
on players like Robidas, Bouillon and Markov. Also, don't
forget the Habs are set on Forwards. With the return of
Audette and the return of Koivu(let's hope so) the habs
will have an excess of players even with Ribeiro gone. As
for Shields, he could very well be a starter in Quebec or
back-up to Jose if the team decides to deal Hackett.
As for the players going to the Ducks, Garon will someday
be a great gaoltender in the NHL, he's only 23 and many
consider him the best goaltending prospect in the AHL,
but will never play in Mtl as a #1 because of Theodore.
Souray with his 6'3 220 pound frame should be a nice
plus for any team and Ribeiro is all talent. We saw it at the
NHL young guns game and all season long.
So this is what the deal looks like:
To Montreal: Oleg Tverdovsky, Steve SHields and a 1st
round pick.
To Anaheim: Mike Ribeiro, Mathieu Garon, Sheldon
Souray and a 2nd or 3rd rounder.
