In all the excitement we are really geting a little ahead of ourselves but the scenario could come up possibly this year. The South east division is the weakest in the east. What if for example Carolina finished with less points than the team seeded 8th?How should the NHL address this.Anyone care to vote?Have another format in mind?Should the number of teams be increased? My personal favorite would be that the 16 teams with the most points be seeded 1 to 16, REGARDLESS of division or Conference. This would insure that the top 16 teams in the League are in the playoffs. After all, I thought that the idea of the playoffs was to showcase the best against the best and let the riff-raff see what it's all about from the sidelines.
I hate the idea of missing the playoffs to a lesser team, like Phoenix (90 pts) did to Carolina (88 pts) last year. Furthermore, it would be nice to see other teams in the playoffs. Right now, all we get is Eastern Conference teams until the final, which is why we have not met teams like Chicago since 1976, Dallas since 1980, Edmonton since 1981, St-Louis since 1977, TORONTO since 1979, Vancouver since 1975. We've yet to meet Winnipeg/Phoenix, Ottawa and San Jose.
I think it would make for much better hockey and also would reduce the risk of trading within your own conference, as you would never know who you would meet...

Frankly I've never been a fan of rewarding the strongest team of the weakest division with not only a playoff spot but a top 4 spot in the conference standings and ice advantage in the playoffs against teams that did better then them. There isn't much logic in doing that since teams in a weak division already have the benefit of playing more games against weak teams anyway. I'd be all for playing the best 8 of the conference with their actual standings within the conference.
