I can't remember the exact deal Andre Savard offered up to Don Waddell at the draft, but it looked something like this: Theodore (Garon?), Markov and 2 1st rounders. that pretty much sums up how sure I am about that being the deal. What sparked this post was Kovalchuk scoring 5 points tonight (1 goal, 4 assists). That gives him 43 on the season. This guy is going to be good for a long time. I give Waddell credit for not biting on any of the deals. Theo, Markov, Komisarek and Perezhogin for Kovalchuk. There's no way Atlanta could pass up on this guy, even though they don't yet have their goalie. And How much better is he looking than Spezza right now? it may not be a fair comparison yet (give it 5 years), but HOLY smokes. If Atlanta can find their goalie, and have patience, they'll contend for a long while. But the thing is, will they be able to hold onto Heatley and Kovalchuk by paying them the money they'll demand? Plus, there's Patrick Stefan. Who knows, this guy has plenty of time to fulfill the previous expectations.

really? I didn't even know Ted Turner owned the club. Well then, he'll probably be willing to open up that fat wallet of his. It will be worth it. He still has the Braves, right?

Yea Kovalchuk is something. He will be a superstar and could well be The Superstar for 10-15 years starting in the not too distant future.
I'd add a few dmen to the Atlanta wish list; their GA is horrendous. As far as paying these guys, don't forget they're not going to be UFAs for a long time so that should do a lot to keep the salaries under control.
As an aside, Turner also owns the Atlanta Hawks of the NBA in addition to the Braves. Nice to have toys.

I see very little of Kovalchuk out here, but I've seen enough of him and heard so much about him that it sort of makes up for only seeing him occasionally. I have to agree he is going to be a Superstar for at least a decade or decade and a half. Makes me wish he was on my team.

I recall the day or two before last summer's draft speaking with Dis regarding Kovalchuk. He had heard of him but hadn't seen him in action. After telling him of the amazing skill he possessed and that he was definitely a player that might be attainable via a swap of picks with Atlanta which included a batch of players going their way, I'm sure he thought I might be a little nuts. I went on to tell him that I was convinced that he would make an instant impact (a bigger version of Bure) and that I'd make ANYONE availabe to Atlanta (including Theo) for the swap in draft positions....so far the kid's not letting me down.
My oh my, I LOVE being right....for a change!

They are doing what we could have been doing. Getting outstanding #1 picks by finishing last. Maybe if we start a rumor that Kovalchouk is working out with Barbarella, Ted will trade him away to us.

I am sorry if I am reviving an old thread, but I did not want to start a new non-Hab thread. I have the EDM-ATL game on here, as I do not get the Habs game. Lowe called for a stick measurement on Kovalchuk's stick and wouldn't you know it!!! Let me put it to you this way, you'll more than likely see the curve on his stick on the news.... Better yet, Kovalchuk comes out of the penalty box and scores right away with his new stick. Which goes to show that it doesn't always turn out like the Habs in the playoffs... LOL

Hey, I got quoted!! ;D
I think the best part about the kid is I haven't heard anything about an attitude with him yet. Not saying he doesn't have one, or it won't develop, but it sure isn't public knowledge as of yet.

Yup,I remember saying last year I had doubts about his attitude,I thought he was a hot dog,etc...well,he still tends to put a little 'mustard' on certain goals, but he isn't the Ilya we saw against Canada in the WJC in Moscow. Also, his agent is not Gandler and he has learned to speak english(heard him over the weekend,he speaks very good english for a guy who has just arrived). But,you have to wonder how good he would be withouth Heatley.

IF Andre Savard had pulled this trade off we would have forgotten Sam Pollock very quickly. Don Wadell probably would have been on some picket line by now if Kovalchuk was putting up these numbers with the Habs. If we could find an offensive gem like him in the next few years and Komiserik and haisey mature look out. HFTO

HFTO I don't think it would have been that bad of a deal for ATL.They get Garon,he becomes their goalie of the future,Markov becomes their PP QB for now and the future, they get a 7th overall pick in the draft to draft Tuomo Ruutu, who becomes their main hope down the middle for a long time and a late 1st round pick in a deep draft. Let's see,a potential #1 goalie,a PP QB,a potential #1 center and another 1st rounder for a potential superstar.I don't think it would have been a terrible deal for them. But,I must say,I wouldn't have made the deal(from our side) if we had to deal Theo.Sorry, but to win a cup,you need a great goalie more than an offensive superstar IMO.

But he IS the Kovalchuk we saw against Canada. He's got fire. He was pissed off that his team was doing so poorly. Thats why he's so good. The man has passion. Too bad Waddell didn't go for the Garon deal (I also wouldn't have done the Theodore deal as good goalies are much more important)

I think if Atlanta does end up with the #1 overall pick this year they may trade it. For a number of reasons:
1) Boumester - will fetch a king's ransom in return. Similar to the offer for Kovacuk. Although, it will not be from Montreal.
2) They have so many great young players a big trade will make them an instant winner.
3) Top drafted defensemen take a few years to develop(Pronger, Phillips). Atlanta may be looking to win now.

I meant MacTavish, as Lowe is the GM and he wouldn't have made the call... Blame my lack of interest in the Oilers, I see Lowe's name all over the papers here so... So, you liked that curve? How could he think he could get away with it? But then again, he got away with it this long...
