Reading most of the posts on the Savage-Berezin trade, I agree with the general consensus that it was a decent trade and I think Berezin will be better over the stretch run than Savage, which will only enhance our playoff chances.
However, whether or not we make the playoffs this year, the Habs will need to seriously rationalize their corps of forwards for next year. Koivu, Audette, Perreault, Berezin, Zednik, Bulis, Juneau, Dackell, Petrov, Ribeiro... that's 10 forwards right there (is anyone over 6" and 200 lbs!!)?? and that's way too small, especially in this conference. On the other hand, there should be some good trade fodder to acquire either a big centre or a big winger.
Savard has done a good job upgrading the overall skill level of this team, but the time will come next year when he will have to turn some of this excess of small, finesse forwards into some size and toughness. If he can do that, along with bring in a real coach who can manage players and improve the overall team defensive play, then we're not that far away. Gee, I'm actually feeling optimistic!!
