I'm impressed with Savard again. First, he realizes that the chances of signing Savage to what he feels Savage is worth before he gets to UFA, are remote. So, knowing that Savage would probably welcome a move he looks around the league for another disgruntled (no relation) goal-scorer who is also looking for a change of scenery. Not only has he found an incredibly fast, talented player in Berezin, but Berezin actually played with Perreault during his tenure in Toronto. How many did Berezin score that year? 37 goals was it? As a matter of fact, I just heard a telephone interview with Berezin and he's really looking forward to coming to Montreal, or more specifically, playing with Perreault again. Perreault must feel good about it also.
Anyway, from what I understand, if the Habs end up resigning Berezin I understand there's a "futures" clause added to it. I just heard on TSN that if Savage resigns with Phoenix then the same applies the other way.
I know that criticism comes with the office of being a GM, and that Savard has his share of critics or skeptics. But this guy just keeps getting the job done. Berezin may be a puck-hog and rarely passes, but I can't see any harm being done to our club with his acquisition. In fact Berezin's acquisition is consistent with the way Savard is building the club; with talent.
On a personal note, I wish Brian Savage well in Phoenix. He's going to an organization that appreciates what he brings to the table. On the other side of the coin, welcome to Sergei Berezin. I can't see how his hustle and new attitude can hurt us in the least. cheers.
