Coyotes Name Kurvers Head of Player Personnel

GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Michael Barnett announced today that Tom Kurvers has been named as the Coyotes Director of Player Personnel. In this capacity, Kurvers will oversee all aspects of the team’s scouting, including both the Coyotes amateur and professional scouting departments.
“We are very pleased to name Tom as our Director of Player Personnel,” said Barnett. “Tom’s background as a former, talented NHL player on a Stanley Cup winner and a Hobey Baker winner makes him an ideal choice for this position. He has done an exceptional job in our pro scouting department and we are confident in his abilities to now lead our entire scouting department.”
The 43-year-old Kurvers has worked the past seven seasons in the Coyotes hockey department as a professional scout, monitoring and eval uating NHL teams and players throughout the season.
“I am very grateful to the organization for giving me this opportunity,” said Kurvers. “We have assembled a strong team on and off the ice and we look forward to the challenge.”
Kurvers played 11 seasons in the NHL with seven different teams including Anaheim, Vancouver, Toronto, New Jersey, Buffalo, Montreal and the New York Islanders. In 1986, Kurvers helped the Montreal Canadiens win the Stanley Cup. In 659 career games, he scored 93 goals and added 328 assists for 421 points. He also played in 58 NHL playoff games, recording 8 goals and 30 points.
Prior to joining the NHL, Kurvers had an outstanding college career at the University of Minnesota - Duluth (WCHA). Kurvers set numerous career records including: goals by a defenseman (43), most career assists (152), and assists by a defenseman (career - 149 and season - 58). In 1984, he won the Hobey Baker Award as the top U.S. collegiate hockey player and was also named an All-American. In addition, he was selected as the WCHA MVP and to the First Team All-WCHA. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication in 1984.
Kurvers retired from the NHL in 1995, playing his final season with Anaheim. He then played two seasons in Japan with the Seibu Bears before returning home to Minnesota to pursue a post-graduate degree. In 1997, he completed his Masters in Business Administration (sports management) from the University of St. Thomas. Kurvers spent one season as the radio color analyst for the Phoenix Coyotes before joining the hockey operations department as a professional scout.
