When I was watching the ceremony for Boom Boom Geoffrion the other night I noticed on the little video they had for him that it said "One number". I got to thinking if that meant "One number in our hearts" or literally that he wore one number. I thought it to be highly unlikely that he would have worn the same jersey number all his career. I know some did, but I have noticed that many greats of the past in Montreal wore multiple numbers. I started to do a bit of research and Boom Boom in fact wore #5 all his career. But what i did find was something I couldn't believe .....
Jean Beliveau wore 5 different numbers. He wore 4, 8, 12, 17, and 20.
In his first season (1950-51) he wore #17 and #20. He didn't play in 1951-52 ... but in 1952-53 he wore #12. Then in 1953 he settled on #4 which he wore up to 1971. But here is something I shook my head at ..... and I find it a bit hard to believe. Jean Beliveau wore 2 numbers in 1971 ..... he wore #8 that year as well.
What I'd like to know is if the last number he wore was #4 or #8? And if he wore #8 that year at all?
Amazing though that of the 5 numbers he has worn, 3 of them are retired.

Interesting trivia Skilly. Where do you find this stuff?
BTW, I am curious. Has any one ever worn 13 for the Habs?

Interesting trivia Skilly. Where do you find this stuff? BTW, I am curious. Has any one ever worn 13 for the Habs? I am a bit of a trivia buff .... plus I read alot of books. To answer your question. In the history of the Habs the least worn jersey numbers under number 30 have been: 0 - only worn by Paul-Emile Bibeault in 1942-43 13 - only worn by Bill Boucher in 1922-23 Something interesting though is that on the current addition of the Habs there are alot of numbers being worn for the first time .... 42 - Alexander Perezhogin 46 - Andrei Kostitsyn 47 - Aaron Downey 51 - Francois Boullion 52 - Craig Rivet 57 - Garth Murray 71 - Mike Ribiero 73 - Michael Ryder 79 - Andrei Markov 86 - Jonathan Ferland Then there is another group of jerseys that are only being worn for the second time: 38 - Bulis (last worn by Mike Lalor in 1987) 39 - Huet (last worn by Brian Skrudland in 1987) 40 - Lapierre (last worn by Dominic Campedelli in 1986) 44 - Souray (last worn by Stephane Richer in 1987 - Richer actually started his career wearing #22) 64 - Cote (last worn by Armand Mondou in 1935) EDIT: I know somebody will ask "What about Yann Danis' #75?" Well #75 has been worn by three other players in Habs history ... Leroy Goldworthy, John Portland, and Desse Roche.

Has any one ever worn 13 for the Habs? 42 - Alexander Perezhogin 46 - Andrei Kostitsyn 47 - Aaron Downey 51 - Francois Boullion 52 - Craig Rivet 57 - Garth Murray 71 - Mike Ribiero 73 - Michael Ryder 79 - Andrei Markov 86 - Jonathan Ferland I believe #47 was worn by Stephan Lebeau in the early nineties. Remember our discussion about him? The history is interesting. I thought the trend to "high" numbers was very recent. I am old school when it comes to numbers. The Habs still have a lot of the traditional hockey numbers left but don't use them. And BTW, 0 is the perfect number for a goalie. It takes some moxie to wear it.

Lebeau did wear #47, sorry for the oversight

I believe #53 has only been worn once as well .... and it should never be allowed on another Habs jersey for fear of sunburns returning .....
#53 Andre Racicot

The joke was that Racicot's ghost has lingered and has transfered his "fine" play to the Bulin wall. Bah! My intellect is wasted on you all! Time for a Samuel Jackson beer. Mmm-mmm, bitch!
