I gotta pay more attention to what's going on in my town of Cambridge, Ontario.
Two weeks ago my favourite player, Yvan Cournoyer, was in town for an autograph signing. I missed it.
Next Saturday, Jean Beliveau will be here...and I am going.
I have my old jersey that Maurice Richard signed in 1992. Or a picture of the 70-71 team (Jean's final year, and my favourite Cup).
I'm leaning toward leaving the jersey with just the Rocket's signature alone....and having Jean sign the picture.
Just so you know his prices:
$40 per bulky item: jersey, jacket, etc. $30 per flat item: picture, hat brim, poster, book, etc.
Some money goes to the Wish Foundation.
I don't begrudge these legends one cent of their fees.
On the other hand......the clerk told me that they can't afford to bring Tie Domi in...he's at least $10,000-12,000 up front.

Beliveau was in Waterloo recently for another signing. Love how the local newspaper started the coverage: "Jean Beliveau, the gentleman hockey player, hasn't skated for the Montreal Canadiens since 1971. But No. 4 can still draw Habs faithful out of the woodwork like no one else, even in the middle of Leafs Nation."Doesn't this writer know that the idiom "to come/crawl out of the woodwork" was coined to equate people to insects crawling out from interior moldings and baseboards...i.e. unpleasant people emerging from hidden places? And he makes it sound as if all Habs' fans are in the woodwork everywhere.....why else would he have said, "EVEN in the middle of Leafs Nation."? He should have simply said, "Even though he hasn't skated for the Montreal Canadiens since 1971, no one resonates with Habs' fans like No. 4, Jean Beliveau." No need for "out of the woodwork" or "Leafs Nation". Just another example of Leafs' fans not being hockey fans. Or maybe he's just a lousy writer.

I was at the Beliveau appearance yesterday. I didn't skate, but caught him on the way in for a moment and shook his hand. That's all I really wanted, as I'm not much for autographs. What would I even get him to sign, anyway.

Was a Leafs/Habs game to boot. Was the best experience. A true gentleman.

What would I even get him to sign, anyway. I took in a tin lithograph dartboard made in the 50s by Eagle Toys. It says "Canadiens vs. All-Stars", made during their 5-Cup run. M. Beliveau said it was the first one he had seen and was thrilled to sign it. I asked him to sign it at centre ice....and it's now hanging in my basement. All the while, I was asking questions about a few of his famous games, all of which brought a smile to his face as he explained what happened.

he's feeling better:
MONTREAL – Following a slight discomfort suffered earlier today, the Montreal Canadiens are pleased to announce that Mr. Jean Béliveau’s condition is fine and he is feeling much better. Now 77 years old, the Canadiens legendary captain was attending the funeral of father Paul Aquin, a longtime friend, when he suddenly felt uneasy due to a drop in blood pressure. Although his condition is not a cause for concern, he will undergo furthers tests as a precautionary measure.

RDS & Sportsnet both reported that he had been released from hospital. No link, just something I saw on their tickers.

An update on Big Jean's health from April of 2013….and a pic from his meeting with the blogger. Has anyone heard of any improvements/updates since last year? At the age of 82 and in frail health, Beliveau has been keeping a low profile in recent years. Last week I had a chance to visit with him at his South Shore condo for a video I was doing as a tribute to community leader Roy Salomon, honoured last Sunday at the annual Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors Foundation Sports Celebrity Breakfast. Beliveau had accompanied Salomon twice to Israel for the Maccabiah Games. Beliveau successfully battled cancer more than a decade ago and is still recovering from a stroke suffered just over a year ago. “I should be gone,” he told me. “It is a miracle I am still alive. Right now I am affected by two things: a lack of energy and weak legs. Every morning I do 25 minutes on the treadmill. I force myself to do it so I can get going. I have been to a few Canadiens games this year, but I only have the strength to stay for the first period.”
I asked Jean about today’s NHL salaries, recognizing that with his star status he would have commanded at least $7 million a season. “The most I made was $100,000,” he laughed. “I guess I was born too early.”

PK Subban comes to Cambridge Ontario to sign autographs. $40,000 per bulky item $30,000 per flat items (bulky is harder to do and it takes time.) + it takes extra time for Subban to sign anything.

Beliveau scored his 500th NHL goal 50 years ago this week. Against Minnesota Noth Stars.
