DEVILS TO SIGN BEREZIN?
NEW YORK POST: Mark Everson reported yesterday the New Jersey Devils have apparently begun talks to sign UFA forward Sergei Berezin. Everson claims the NY Rangers may be among half-a-dozen clubs interested in Berezin but not as interested as the Devils. Everson today reports the Devils apparently have no interest in signing free agent centre Adam Oates, although his faceoff and playmaking skills would make him a good replacement for the departed Joe Nieuwendyk.
TSN.CA: reports a signing of Berezin could mean a trade in the Devils future as they're already stacked on the left wing with with Patrik Elias, Jeff Friesen, Jay Pandolfo, Sergei Brylin, Erik Rasmussen.
Spector's Note: My thanks to all of you who sent this in. I'm not questioning the Devils need for more offense, but does Berezin strike anyone as being a Devils type player? Does anyone see this guy fitting comfortably into their system? Personally, I don't. Still, they did bring in Alexander Mogilny three years ago and it turned his career around, so who knows?
If it happens, the Devils will have a glut. I'd be interested in any of Rasmussen, Brylin and Pandolfo. Eric and Jay are good character guys and Brylin showed in the playoffs that he's a great two way player. Brylin would be a nice upgrade on the third line. The other two would do well too. Maybe Sunny and a pick for any of the three?
