Our defense is terrifying. Emelin was bad, Bouillon no better. A lot of extra time in our own zone because of it. Third period was a lot better though, with some good shifts in the final 10 minutes or so.
If they want to have success against Tampa, they'll need to be prepared for this type of game. Fingers crossed.

That would be great. A trans-Canada parade. However, unless they magically learn to play better in their own zone, there won't be any Canadian representation in the 2nd round of the NHL playoffs. I forgot to add that Emelin was "Murray" bad with the puck on his stick, and Gorges is still hurt IMHO. He fumbled quite a few passes. This team still needs better offensive depth, and better over all d-men, or a better defensive system. The Habs are still pretenders. Oh well...Go Habs Go

Price didn't take the game off.....he appears to be as sharp as ever.
And we'll need him to be just that.

Fingers crossed. Emelin handled it like a grenade earlier, but there was a shift in the third that exemplified the issues getting the puck out and it wasn't our D. Subban and Gorges made three or four strong plays on the puck behind their net to win battles and move the puck up ice only to have forwards be out of position, out of the zone cherry picking, or bailing on contact. The power play is a disgrace. Some of it is trying to get Max to 40. Some is trying too hard for the perfect play. All of it is resulting in slow puck movement, feet in cement, and no scoring chances. The chance for 40 is gone now, so hopefully things improve. Going forward, I'd like to see changes to the players on each unit. Prust-DD-Pacioretty Gionta-Plekanec-Vanek Break up the trio. Get some net presence on the first unit, lunch pale time. And I want to see one pass and shoot. One pass and shoot. Whiz a few by the ears of willing shot blockers.

So in 3 games against the Rags this year they allow 1 goal and the Rags gain 3 points. Crazy stat.
Nice dramatic finish for Gio to score the OT winner on a penalty shot. His last regular season game in Montreal?

Getting shut out (technically) over the last two games is concerning to me & the PP is godawful. Has been for a long time with no solution in sight.

Not going to read too much in a nothing game.
The playoffs are a new season. Let's see what happens with some of our problems. The Bolts are a good match for us. So we either shine....or look like coal dust.

Watched a bit of the Ott-TO game (Hab commercials) and a bit of the Vanc-Edm.game. Funny yet sad listening to the announcers try and run out the season for these teams. Proud too be a Habs fan - AGAIN!!!

Gionta's penalty shot goal was possibly the most significant goal scored by a Hab this season. For it not to be, the Bolts would have to win their game against the Caps in Washington in order to clinch home ice in the first round of the playoffs.

I personally know quite a few Habs fans back in New Brunswick and don't forget about poor old Skilly stuck on the Rock. The only proper parade has to go from coast to coast!

Price finishes tied for 3rd in SP at .927 and tied for 2nd in shutouts with 6. Wonder if he'll get a Vezina nomination?

I thought we got lucky on the penalty shot call. Gionta didn't have possession,so I think the correct call should have been tripping.
Thanks for thinking about me Gogie, ..., if they pull it off, we will all have to meet for a beer - hopefully wheelchairs and canes won't be needed

100 points! When was the last time we had a team do that?
Getting by Tampa will be huge. Boston; certainly the favourite for the east.
Now it gets tough!
Cheers.

His game last night was probably his best of the season for a variety of reasons. Watching him come out and aggressively challenge shooters was something we haven't seen too often.

Contrary to what the CBC would have people believe, there are Habs fans coast to coast (including NS ). Start in Vancouver, end off in St. John's for George St festival.

I thought we got lucky on the penalty shot call. Gionta didn't have possession,so I think the correct call should have been tripping. I don't know. Skilly, and I'm not going to check on the technical details of a penalty shot penalty. There is no question Gionta was winning the foot race against Diaz (never in a million years does Diaz catch him) and if he physically had possession at that moment isn's material to me. He would have had a play on net if he wasn't tripped, which was taken away by Diaz and Gionta was certainly in the clear. There was never a doubt in my mind at least, the play called for a penalty shot. I was mostly concerned that Gionta wouldn't score. He's not our best shootout candidate, for sure. Pulled off a great one, though.

Thanks for thinking about me Gogie, ..., if they pull it off, we will all have to meet for a beer - hopefully wheelchairs and canes won't be needed As i mentioned in the GDT, I would have rathered a 4 on 3 than a Gio PS. Gio proved me wrong! Skilly you would know the scoring % of our PP 4 on 3 v. Gio shootout %. Speaking of our PP and % they were apparently working on it all week. The only change i noted was Marky carrying the puck instead of PK. What creative coaching! So we can't gain the zone because it's PK's fault? Note to MT: Marky didn't do much better and maybe there should be a unit strategy to enter and gain possession than relying on one player. The other thing that really bugs me on PPs, and it's not just the Habs, but it happened last night again, is when a player on the PK breaks their stick the PP has no clue how to take advantage of that. It basically becomes a 5 on 3.5 if used properly. My sense is that the pp player with possession of the puck should move towards the player without the stick. That player is usually a forward as they would have given their stick to a dman if it was a dman's stick that broke. The pp player, presumably a point man, can get very close as the defender can't do much except grab. That way you've completely neutralized that defender and created a 4 on 3 in the rest of the zone and there should be an easy pass. More often that not the pp seems to shoot which is just dumb or move the puck away from the stickless defender. Do they practice this? Doesn't look like it. They should, as it happens quite often and would significantly improve their %. Of course if it's MT coming up with the strategy, all bets are off. It amazes me that some players still don't get the concept that when you're on the PP and the other team gets another penalty that you kill the clock ASAP to maximize the 4 on 3 time. Are these guys just dumb?

www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26308I think it met the criteria for the penalty shot call. He lost possession, but he had a gap on Diaz and wasn't given the chance to regain possession. These are the 4 criteria: (i) The infraction must have taken place in the neutral zone or attacking zone, (i.e. over the puck carrier’s own blue line);
(ii) The infraction must have been committed from behind;
(iii) The player in possession and control (or, in the judgment of the Referee, clearly would have obtained possession and control of the puck) must have been denied a reasonable chance to score (the fact that he got a shot off does not automatically eliminate this play from the penalty shot consideration criteria. If the foul was from behind and he was denied a “more” reasonable scoring opportunity due to the foul, then the penalty shot should be awarded);
(iv) The player in possession and control (or, in the judgment of the Referee, clearly would have obtained possession and control of the puck) must have had no opposing player between himself and the goalkeeper.IMO, the play meets all of these.

It was the referees judgement but I'd argue that he never had possession nor control at any point, AND the goaltender would have beaten him to the puck, as he was coming out. But in don't mind the call, just would not have argued if the ref just called a tripping call

Gionta hasn't taken a shootout attempt this year. I've long said that when the opposition has three players on the ice, the Habs have no idea what to do. Three 5 on 3 goals and one 4 on 3 goal ....
