They sound better to me than the Vaneks and Moulsons. Cheaper options for sure. May also not be looking for that long term deal that the others are looking for. And we need another winger for the top 2 lines.

They'd be good third line depth if Gionta wasn't re-signed.

Any love for either Devin Setoguchi or Milan Michalek? Both are bigger bodies who can really skate, both have had some scoring success in the past, both might look good on the wing with Desharnais and Pacioretty. Neither one of them had a particularly good year last season, though neither was horrible. Worst case scenario you're looking at 15-20 goals, best case you might get them back into the 25-30 range. Either would fit our "four lines of skating fury" philosophy, could be moved up and down the lineup as necessary, and shouldn't break any banks to get. Not the sexiest of names out there, but might be the most realistic options for us. I found this on a pro sens website

I think expecting Michalek to be a 30 30 man was a mistake on the part of Sens mgt and fans. He's not consistent enough for that. Similar to a Bourque type. He's more a 20g 40-50pt player at best.

Though I don't know how he can score 31 goals and then constantly decline before he hits 28. Michelak is no 6 million dollar solution. On top of that, what about his knees? What about Cammarelli? Or Raymond? Or Vrbata? Or Callahan? My FIRST target would be Cammarelli. I'm not afraid of his "motivation" since we already know what he's like. Plus he is an easy 20-25 goal scorer even at 34. heck, he fits right in size wise.

I think they are realistic targets, especically Setoguchi who I don't think would cost a furtune nor garner crazy interest from other teams. Bergevin has been linked in trade talks to this guy before. Would he fit? I wonder. We're looking for a first line RW and Devin's offensive numbers don't suggest he's up to the task at all, except for that ONE big season 6 year's ago. Michalek is a more potent offensive threat but he's a LW... As others have said, both have this René Bourque profile of being inconsistent both in the scoring and effort department. How would that work with Therrien? That being said with Galchenyuk moving to center, we need 2 top 6 wingers... I don't think we have a shot at either Vanek or Moulson, so these guys are the next level down..

Watching the Finals….wow…..we've got a long way to go to match that intensity/physicality.
Weise, Prust, and Gallagher are the only forwards we have in that vein. Galchenyuk goes for it, too.
Pleks….once in a blue moon. Eller….not enough, considering his size/strength. Pacioretty….nowhere near what he can do. Gionta….nope. Vanek…zero. DD…works hard, but too easily knocked off the puck. Gotta have size to go with that…for a Cup. Bourque…see Eller. Briere…see DD, without the intensity. Never been that type of player.
Our 4th line is finally a solid one….and IS a threat to score.
But we need a majority of forwards who are capable of and willing to battle.
I'm actually surprised we beat Boston. Good thing we very often get them to play our game.

I think that the first biggest hole we have to fill is size on defense. You are not stopping those guys with Markov, Gorges, Booboo and Weaver. I would spend all my efforts to make sure Tinordi, Beauleau and Pateryn develops. Defensive size and mobility matters big time every time I saw LA drive into the net. We are not that far away.........develop two of the above three defensman and take away the 13 million from fading Gionta and Vanish for Callahan/Vrbata/Stastny/Jokinen, we get a lot closer. Did you see any passengers on LA team? Do you think they would be hoisting the cup with Boo/Weaver/Vanish/Gionta/Briere on their team? I don't.

The closer you get to the cup, the higher the intensity gets. You didn't see that type of play out of the Rangers in the regular season. The Kings always play that way, but you take away Quick (yoohoo, Kreider) and you get a team that has trouble getting out of the first round. It's always goaltending. Sutter's teams never did well in the playoffs because they were burned out by the time they got there. Give him a Quick and suddenly his teams find that extra gear they never managed before. Funny how that works. I agree with you on the dmen, though. I don't have the same confidence in Beaulieu that most have. He has to get stronger. The rest of his game is good enough, but if he can't win those battles on the board, teams like LA will eat him up. I think all 3 have enough mobility, especially Beaulieu. Once again, I think Tinordi's skating is better than he gets credit for. Anyway, those 3 need more ice time. And we need 30 goals from some UFA right winger.

I'm actually surprised we beat Boston. I'm not ... we were in their heads, at least the heads of the Bruins fans I talked to, even before the season started ... two B's friends of mine actually admitted that the one team they didn't want to face in the playoffs is the Habs ... yet, as I was told by other B's fans "... we could lose every game of the season just so long as we beat Montreal ..." as I reply, "yeah, right on ... how's that workin' out for ya' ..." it usually ends well with everyone but I just sense it from them that it's now personal ... and it's been personal with many of the fans, certainly in their media and it's been non-stop ... like I was saying, I have some good personal friends who are B's fans, but when we beat them it really knocks the wind out them ... but we're in their heads ... #weshouldstaythereCheers.

The Kings sucked for a while (like Boston did) and they drafted very well ... picking up Carter and Richards was probably what cemented that core together ... they augmented Kopitar, Quick and Doughty ... then they pick up Gaborik at the deadline ... it's a well-built, well-managed organization all around ... I don't know how Holmgren ever let those two guys go ... they're probably still drinking their beer in LA only they're winning Cups ... the Kings got it, though ... goaltending, defence corps, the scoring and do you notice that they don't need an ubergoon ... they're just a big, talented team that can take care of themselves ... #morecupscoming
Cheers.

I don't want to get in the habit of signing guys just because they are available. Do you REALLY want Michalek or Setoguccii or are they just the next best guys on the list? That's what Gionta and Cammalleri were in 2010. The best guys that were available.
Berg needs to go after the guys he WANTS, whoever they are. Use Eller, Pleks, Tinordi, Beaulieu as trade bait. Go aggressively after Vanek. Just taking our draft pick and signing mid-level guys to expensive contracts isn't gong to cut it.

You sign Weise, I think that's a no-brainer. Weaver, it all depends on how much you trust the development of pateryn, Tinordi and Beaulieu. If we sign Weaver, I can see MB moving one of those three to pick up a top six RW. If Markov doesn't sign, which I don't think he will, MB will have to go and get a top 4 veteran d man.

A few thoughts:
A top 6 scoring RW is a priority. I would target Iginla if he doesn't extend with Boston, as he looks like he still has gas in the tank, and costs no assets to acquire. A big fast scoring winger with a mean streak is exactly what we need. I'd also sign Gionta at a discount with the idea that he's the 3rd line RW.
Another possibility to fill that RW spot is Stewart, which I don't like as much as Iginla, cause we'd be giving up assets and he's effectively a rental, becoming UFA in a year. Either he's doesn't work out and we've wasted assets for nothing, or he's a success and either walks or demands a hefty contract that there's high risk of not living up to (based on historical inconsistent play). I'd imagine that Buffalo's plan is to play the heck out of him, giving every chance to succeed, and maximize his value before flipping him as a rental.
As for the centre debate, I'm inclined to keep Plekanec. It would be too much of a step back to expect that DD and Chucky can carry the load, and could cost a playoff spot. DD would be the one to move. I like the guy, and it would likely draw some outrage, but the transition would be much smoother if we slotted Galchenyuk into his spot.
On defence we need to hang on to Markov, and upgrade the top 4 via trade. Hang on to Weaver, and make sure that Beaulieu and Tinordi get a chance to develop.

Not entirely sure how close they are, but it would certainly appear both sides want it. www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=454550Gionta wants clarification of what his role will be, what the near future direction of the club is etc. I get keeping the captain if it's to aide in the transition to the next one. Yes, he had a decent regular season. I just think we can get the same production from a bigger, younger, body. Right now I would rather cut bait and either sigh a free agent or bring someone up like Leblanc. Better amend that to a conditional fifth rounder.

Losing Markov and Vanek and the team that wasn't good enough last year will be weaker next year. Markov has Los a step, maybe three steps, defensively. His offense will be lost. Vanek has the talent but lacks the drive to be a team player. Ditto Bourque and Briere. We could win with 23 Gallaghers, driving to the net, winning battles for loose pucks, hustling back to support the defense. That's what I saw in NY and LA. Consistent effort every shift every day. Give Beaulieu and Tinordi a chance. Weaver can get the job done and we have to have a big body defenseman for Boston and the Leafs. We have some kids in the minors that can score but may be a year away. We need Subban signed but for fair market value, not forCrosby money. Subban has great ability, greater potential and a few areas that need work. Attracting free agents to Montreal, taxes, climate, language, public scrutiny yada yada yada, has never been easy. Subban in Toronto would really hurt when he becomes a FA or gets a ridiculous offer.

For all I know of Setogucci, he looks like a slightly more talented version of Dagostini. Time to develop our own players and trade/sign the one we really wants. I am confident that's what Bergevin plans to do. I remember rumors of a trade with the Avalanche this winter involving Rene Bourque. It seems like Bergevin was offered Parenteau but his target was Jamie Mcginn so no trade happened. If true, I really like our gm's approach.

Douglas Murray, here is a guy who doesn't hurt our cap. He is not going to impact Tinordi or Beaulieu's development as he only consumes 5 minutes of ice time in the games where he actually plays. He is too slow to be a top four D but there are situations and teams against whom he is extremely valuable, not as a fighter, but clearing the slot and throwing the occasional wake up check. He makes opponents more honest and aware. I want to see him back, maybe not for three years and $18 million dollars, but a lot less.
