Haven't had Phaneuf? Here's more: "Another player who has been rising up the rankings over the year is the Red Deer Rebels' Dion Phaneuf. Ranked 8th overall in North America, Phaneuf is your prototypical tough-as-nails WHL defenseman, the kind opposing teams have nightmares about having to face in battle. Excelling most in the physical realm, Phaneuf is more than willing to defend his teammates by dropping the gloves or getting the team's emotional level up by delivering a punishing bodycheck. He is a leader on the perennially-contending Rebels team. Said one Western League observer: "He is a tough kid who can play. With his size and strength, he is probably the most physical player in the WHL among draft eligible players. He really improved his skating, that is one thing I noticed watching him. His mobility has really improved, and he fought a lot early, and less so later, probably because no one wanted to dance anymore either. He has a very good shot, but could probably be better with his decision-making at times." But don't be mistaken into thinking that Phaneuf is just a pile-driver on the ice, although he certainly excels in that capacity. Phaneuf also is capable of launching a heavy shot." - www.newyorkislanders.com/news/draftcentral_coburn052203.html

And another positive Red Line blurb on Phaneuf:
"Red Line's WHL scouts have been lobbying for us to move Dion Phaneuf even further up the charts. Their playoff report on the tough rearguard: "Has been great at both ends of the ice. He's so physical and positionally sound defensively and has picked up his offensive game as well. Medicine Hat ran at him big time trying to throw him off or get him to take stupid penalties, but he kept his composure and made smart plays with the puck rather than tossing it away as many players would have under that heavy a forecheck. Also has six goals and 12 points in 18 games."
That's some pretty strong lobbying."

You know, I'm starting to think Zach Parise might be the best player in this draft when we look back on it a decade from now. I mean, I was for him before based on our draft position, but like me and Freak discussed this morning (in the real world), he very possibly won't even be available that far down.
Ah well, it's the time for dreaming, and dreaming of Parise in a Habs uniform is what I'm doing up to the draft.
And if the Habs pass on him if he's available, I will NOT be a happy camper, no sir.

I agree, the only reason why he isnt at the top is because of his size. His talent, skill and heart would make him a top 3 draft pick at least, but size seems to be at the top of most scouts and GMs list. I'm hoping hes still there at 10, or AS moves up 2-3 spots to ensure we can draft him. If Phaneuf and Parise are gone at #10 it will be a very dissapointing draft.

Mock Draft made by me:
1. Florida: Eric Staal (C) The first overall seems pretty much set in stone, Staal will be the first player drafted. Florida doesn't need that much more depth at center, but Staal is better than most wingers in the top 5.
2. Carolina: Marc-Andre Fleury (G) If Florida stay at #1 and Carolina sticks with its #2 pick, they will draft M-A Fleury because they see Fleury as their next franchise goalie. Fleury may not be the BPA at #2 but Carolina will go with its needs, hoping Fleury can jump into the NHL very soon.
3. Pittsburgh: Nikolai Zherdev (RW) If the Penguins don't manage to move up to draft Fleury they will take the previous BPA of the draft. Even though he had a poor WJC showing, they will risk this pick knowing he will still become a great NHLer with lots of scoring potential.
4. Columbus: Nathan Horton (C) The BPA at the #4 spot would have to be Horton. With Nash, Leclaire and Klesla Columbus wouldn't mind drafting their franchise center to play with Nash, and what a deadly combo. Horton should be drafted in the top 5 and is probably a better pick than Vanek.
5. Buffalo: Thomas Vanek (LW) After his impressive playoff showing, carrying his team on his back, and Buffalo looking for some offensive help according to some articles, Vanek is their best choice at the 5th overall. After his amazing 2nd half in the NCAA, Vanek has climbed the draft ladder.
6. San Jose: Milan Michalek (LW) Having just lost Nolan and Selanne during the past year, SJ will pick Michalek even if he may not be the BPA. SJ thinks they are set on D with most of their Dman being under 25. SJ is desprate for that offensive forward and hope that Michalek can fix his game and become that good offensive prescence with Marleau.
7. Nashville: Ryan Suter (D) Suprised this highly skilled offensive dman has not been taken, Nashville sees him as the BPA at the #7 spot and with their lack of good D, they will jump on the occasion to take him.
8. Atlanta: Braydon Coburn (D) With three great young players in Kovalchuk, Heatley and Lethonen, the only type of player missing is that big gritty stay-at-home dman with a good two way style. With the fans pressuring them to take Coburn, Atlanta will give in and pick Coburn at #8 giving them a really nice team in a few years.
9. Calgary: Dion Phaneuf (D) Calgary will flip when they see Phaneuf is still avaible at the #9 spot with such a great season. Suprising that even though Phaneuf may become a better dman than Suter or Coburn, Phaneuf will end up in the bottom 3.
10. Montreal: Zach Parise (C) Suprised that Parise was not talking earlier, and that Phaneuf was taken the spot above, Montreal will not be shy drafting Parise because of his size. Parise's heart and skill will make him the BPA in AS's eyes and will not hesistate in drafting Parise.
Making a mock draft is a lot harder than it looks, lots of hard decisions to make. The bottom part is debatable, but thats what I see happening. Suter wont be picked at the 4th overall as predicted by SI. If Phaneuf has REALLY impressed a team, we may see him being picked a lot higher than expected.

Very different kind of mock draft, lots of different players in the bottom 15. I don't see Atlanta picking up a forward over a dman right now though, they will try to get a D who could step in very soon IMO. Although a Kovalchuk - Parise - Heatley line would be deadly Can't complain about drafting Phaneuf though, but I still can;t choose between Phaneuf and Parise, they both seem like they will turn out to be amazing players.

Yeah, the Thrashers REALLY need that potential number 1 d-man. They are in a position where they SHOULD draft the best d-man available...they have the goalie, they have alot of offensive talent up front..but their D sucks BAD..

Atlanta is the one team I could see not taking the BPA but choose the best defenseman available. They have 2 future forward stars and a top ranked goalie prospect in Lethonen. Ranking Phaneuf, Coburn and Suter into the top 3 D seems a little tricky. Most scouts see it as Suter -> Coburn -> Phaneuf, but I would take Phaneuf over the other two. Most GM's build their teams from the bottom up, so that quality #1 D is missing. Switch Phanef and Parise in TSN's mock draft and it may come pretty close to reality.

The MNS Mock draft results are in for our picks (my picks)...
Montreal 10th overall - F - Zach Parise (or Vanek if he slides ;D) Montreal 40th overall - D - Nathan Paetsch or Brent Seabrook Montreal 54th overall - F - Corey Locke
So i picked a couple of little guys, but you've gotta go for the BPA, and Parise will probably be it if he's left at the ten spot. Paetsch would give us almost immediate help on the blueline and could develop into a strong top 4 d man, Seabrook might take longer, but could be equally as good. Locke is rated 61st out of North American skaters, but his 63 goals and 88 assists in 66 games is just way too appealing not to grab him with our other second. Those #'s might look Ribeiro like from his junior days, except for one key factor, he's FAST, and already as big as Ribs is now.

Same reason why Parise isnt at the top of the draft list, scouts dont like his size. He was reported to be 5'8 165 in November I believe, so they ranked him pretty low. If hes still there at 54 I'd take him in a heart beat. Yes he is small, but those kinds of stats are just incredible... most have 1 ppg averages, he has almost a gpg average... and it seems like hes grown a fair bit, probably just a late bloomer when it came to growing.

I wish we could trade or second rounder along with Brisebois to a team like Philly for a late 1rst round pick. I would really like to see MTL pick both Parise and a large winger (i.e Steve Bernier or Ryan Stone).
Actually Ryan Stone might still be available at 40th pick and would certainly be a great pick. Thoughness is really one thing we miss on that team.

Boston released Jiri Jakes back to the draft pool. He is 6'4" 225 lbs. and had some good showing in Bostons training camps although he never made it. He is older than the 18 year olds that typically go in the first two rounds, but would it be worth a shot to see if he can mature in Hamilton the way Ward did? Does anyone know why Boston gave up on him? I'd love to see a line with three big guys like Esposito, Cashman and Hodge in the tricolore.

Does anyone know why Boston gave up on him? I'd love to see a line with three big guys like Esposito, Cashman and Hodge in the tricolore. From HF: Talent Analysis For a player standing 6-4 and 225 pounds, Jakes possesses good agility and balance, however his overall speed is still poor. Offensively his passing is improving, but his wrist shot is already very effective; on the whole, his play with the puck must get better. He has an uncharacteristic amount of grit for a European forward. Jakes is physical in the corners and in front of the net, and is a hard worker that is committed to his defensive responsibilities. Plays a style similar to: Jean-Yves Leroux Future 2002 training camp update, Jiri was about what I expected in camp. He handled the puck well and drove to the net. Jiri may have improved his skating but not enough. One thing to remember about bigger players is they take longer to develope. Jiri has returned to Brandon for another season and will be back at camp in 2003. Will Jiri's skating improve and will the Bruins give him the time to develope? Stats Year Team League GP G A Pts PIM 1999-00 Sparta Cze. Jr 35 12 14 26 n/a 2000-01 Brandon WHL 64 22 16 38 73 2000-01* Brandon WHL 6 1 1 2 4 2001-02 Brandon WHL 56 16 18 34 73 ----------------------------------------------- His main problem is speed and skating... He was drafted in the 5th round so shouldnt go much higher, I've even heard he may be UFA... If hes UFA I'd sign him to an AHL contract to see if he could improve his skating, he could turn into another Ward, but LW instead. Wouldn't mind hiring a skating coach for Hamilton, skating seems to really make an NHL player a bust or a keeper.

I have just received my copy of the Red Line Report Draft issue. Along with having my copy of THN Draft Preview, I thought it would be interesting to post a comparison of each respective top 30 prospects. Red Line also has 2 mock drafts from 2 of their staffers. One last thing that I will mention about RLR's top 30. They compiled their list completely in house, meaning that no NHL GMs or scouts were consulted. They rate them as they feel that each player selected is the BPA at said pick. So without further rambling, here are the lists starting with each top 30: Red Line Hockey News 1. Marc-Andre Fleury 1. Eric Staal 2. Nathan Horton 2. Marc-Andre Fleury 3. Nikolai Zherdev 3. Nathan Horton 4. Andrei Kastsitsyn 4. Nikolai Zherdev 5. Milan Michalek 5. Ryan Suter 6. Tomas Vanek 6. Milan Michalek 7. Braydon Coburn 7. Braydon Coburn 8. Eric Staal 8. Tomas Vanek 9. Anthony Stewart 9. Ryan Getzlaf 10. Hugh Jessiman 10. Zach Parise 11. Ryan Getzlaf 11. Dion Phaneuf 12. Petr Vrana 12. Dustin Brown 13. Zach Parise 13. Andrei Kastsitsyn 14. Dion Phaneuf 14. Marc-Antoine Pouliot 15. Pat O'Sullivan 15. Konstantin Glazachev 16. Jeff Carter 16. Jeff Carter 17. Dustin Brown 17. Ryan Kesler 18. Ryan Suter 18. Robert Nilsson 19. Danny Fritsche 19. Anthony Stewart 20. Mark Stuart 20. Pat O'Sullivan 21. Evgeny Tunik 21. Mark Stuart 22. Ryan Kesler 22. Hugh Jessiman 23. Brent Seabrook 23. Richard Stehlik 24. Steve Bernier 24. Steve Bernier 25. Ivan Khomutov 25. Jeff Tambellini 26. Robert Nilsson 26. Brent Seabrook 27. Igor Mirnov 27. Dan Fritsche 28. Mike Richards 28. Eric Fehr 29. Ryan Stone 29. Corey Perry 30. Shawn Belle 30. Kevin Klein Now I will show the 2 mock drafts done by 2 scouts from RLR. I will only post the top 10 of each for obvious reasons. 1. Eric Staal 1. Nathan Horton 2. M-A Fleury 2. Eric Staal 3. Nathan Horton 3. M-A Fleury 4. Nikolai Zherdev 4. Nikolai Zherdev 5. Tomas Vanek 5. B. Coburn 6. B. Coburn 6. M. Michalek 7. M. Michalek 7. Tomas Vanek 8. Ryan Suter 8. Dion Phaneuf 9. Ryan Getzlaf 9. Ryan Suter 10. Dustin Brown 10. Hugh Jessiman Enjoy folks!! I read and analyzed the two carefully and here are the guys who will move up. Bernier, Brown, Belle, Nillson. Dropping will be Parise, Getzlaf, Phaneuf, Kastsysin. It's impossible to predict the final outcome, but GM's love to be photographed on draft day beside a 6'3" kid in their sweater. Brad Boyes was better than Alexeev who was taken way ahead of him. Fair, NO. Consistent YES. Hudler dropped too. Draft day is a day for writers to get the season ticket holders excited about a kid who won't be on the team for three years in most cases, but makes big headlines that day.

If, somehow, for some reason, we should draft Nathan Paetsch (who Washington couldn't sign, and who re-entered the draft), our trade ledger with the Caps becomes:
Zednik, Bulis, Perezhogin and Paetsch for Linden and Hubris, er, Zubrus.
Bloody-minded and not a logical way to draft, but it would make me rub my hands together in malevolent glee.

I hope Parise and Locke become superstars so we can get rid of the "size is #1 and talent can be taught" mentallity that has gripped the league for so many years for good.
Talent should always be #1. I don't care if my player is a freakin' 3 foot 6 inch midget as long as he skates like the wind and scores in bunches and has incredible hockey sense.
I know I took a lot of flak for wanting to make the nets bigger because of the boring game we have today, and I know people love to blame expansion and goalie pads for the problem (goalie pads yes, expansion a definitive no if you're using any logic whatsoever), but the big problem today is too many big guys who have no clue out there.
They were drafted high because they were 6'4" behemoths that were scoring at a half-a-point pace in junior... and then people are shocked when they suck in the NHL. It's insanity, plain and simple.
Get back to scouting based on talent and skill, not on stupid-ass photo ops for your first round pick, and I guarantee you a better game in five years.
