ArticleTell me these kids aren't going to have any issues at school. Nice to know Wal-Mart has no restrictions on cake decorating.

The parents are stupid for naming their kid, but not decorating a cake is equally stupid.

The parents are stupid for naming their kid, but not decorating a cake is equally stupid. One of their other children has the middle names "Aryan Nation". They're white nationalist neo-Nazis. They may not be "stupid" at all...(living in a warped reality, IMO)....and they're obviously strong in their convictions....otherwise they wouldn't have named their children as such. But, the vast majority of the world finds them radically offensive in their racist views.....and I dare say, if I owned a bakery and a white supremacist couple ordered a cake for son Adolf Hitler....I wouldn't consider myself equally "stupid" for turning them away. Not even in the same ball park. ------------------------------------ Now, where's Wal-Mart's number? I'd like to see if they'll decorate a batch of Joseph Mengele tarts and Hermann Goering cookies.

It's not his fault his parents named him that way. I think Neo-Nazi-ism is stupid, but I wouldn't turn them away based on their ideals. Especially since it's a cake for a kid.

I don't care if the cake is for a kid, a teenager, or a grown man.....the message is simple. "Take your business elsewhere." The kid got his cake at Wal-Mart. There's always somebody who'll take the cash.

To entertain your hypothetical, I probably wouldn't force my Jewish baker to comply himself but the service would still be rendered by someone. Me, if it came to it (which was my presumption all along). Personally, I don't see a large difference between denying service on grounds of being a Neo-Nazi and denying service on grounds of religion, political ideal or skin colour, which are all recognized as bigotry.

Oh, there's a big difference. Hitler wanted the entire Jewish population annihilated. How many were exterminated in the camps and elsewhere? How many were experimented upon? The Neo-Nazi Aryan Nationalists also believe that "white is right". Would you also have decorated the cake if they had wanted the "N"-word on there? There's a big difference between denying a cake decoration in a stand against those ideals and, "I won't decorate your cake because you voted Liberal." Hitler was the epitome of bigotry. How can denying this customer also be bigotry? I'm a pretty lenient, understanding guy, but I have ZERO tolerance for neo-Nazi-ism. -------------------------------------- The sooner the kids get the message that they're going to hit roadblocks in the mainstream, the better.

I also think that the name Adolph Hitler has become synonymous with evil and hatred. It's all well and fine to exercise one's right to name their children any name they want, but to do it because no one will ever name their kids the same, doesn't wash with me whatsoever. I don't want to judge people from behind the security of my PC screen. However, whether parents choose to name their sons John, Sampson or Cletus, there is some deliberate thought given to it. Just as there's some deliberate thought to giving children the names Adolph Hitler or Aryan Nation. I really don't have much more to say on that.

I will never complain about my parents again. This has all the makings of a Johnny Cash song. How many days would Bettman suspend them if he played in the NHL and ordered a cake. He should take up his Shop Rite complaint with Jerry Springer. Will their next child will be Barak Obama Sucks Campbell? I think it's disgusting parenting, but it is a free country and they are free to be stupid. Feel sorry for the kids though.

But, I'm hoping there's remorse at the end of all of this. Cheers. If they're socialized in a Neo-Nazi environment, chances are very high that they'll have no problem with their middle names at all. In fact, they'll be proud of them. That's how the brain works. And so the cycle continues.

I don't disagree it's a despicable thing. I just feel that in a society where the law is to accept others' beliefs as they are -- remember, it's not illegal to think stuff, only to act on it(then again, we're talking about the U.S.... Hello Patriot Act!) -- you have to take the good with the bad when it comes to a service-oriented business. And as for creating roadblocks, that, to me, might further insulate them in their bigotry or even make me a possible target of it, well maybe I'm just not that guy. Maybe I would deny them service, it's a little difficult to imagine myself in that situation. Nobody needs to justify their actions in this regard, it's interesting hearing what others have to say about it. A touchy subject that doesn't get much discussion-time, but perhaps ought to.

I understand that it's a slippery slope, deny a service or product to a customer based on their beliefs, but its a slippery slope the other way too; if Walmart, for example, refuses to decorate a cake depicting two men having sex, does that mean that they are anti-gay? Or does it simply mean that they don't provide that kind of product and/or service?
What about somebody who wants swearing on their cake? Or violent images? Or just plain old, regular pornography? There are bake shops that specialize in that sort of thing, just not Walmart (or your mom and pop bakery, in this case). At what point does the store have the right to say "nope, sorry, we don't provide that kind of service?"
Remember, they weren't refusing to serve the people, they were just refusing to provide a certain type of product. If they refused to provide a cake that said "Happy Birthday Son" because the couple were neo-Nazis then that would be one thing. Where it gets confusing of course, is the son's actual name is offensive...
At any rate, two more kids who are going to grow up being racist, intolerant you-know-whats...

...some people just want the attention. I mean who would name their sone Hitler without expecting overraction and all sorts of problems...
...that being said, refusing to write a name on a cake because of what someone with the same name did? A bit much if you ask me. It's a name. Not an insult. The line is fine though and those parents certainly knew it and are probably way happy to get all that attention.

Doc, this isn't an unaware bubble family who just happened to name their son "Adolf Hitler" out of ignorance...nor did they do it just for attention. They're in-your-face, loud-and-proud neo-Nazis who did it on purpose....to pay homage to the guy.
I agree, it's not the kid's fault at all. But, if the parents have their way, he'll be brought up thinking Hitler's Nazis and all their ideals/plans were awesome...and passing it on to his children.
And that's the insult.
I wonder if they wanted devil's food.

There's an article about this on canoe.ca, and the father claims that there kids of all races at the birthday party. No one names their kid those names on a whim though.

You can't legislate out stupidity. If people follow Jones to Guyana and take poisoned koolade or poison themselves waiting for a spaceship behind a comet, ? You can't fix stupidity no matter how hard Liberals and Democrats try. Wanna buy swampland in Florida, a senate job in Illinois, a sure thing 20% ROI with Bernard Madoff, be a petsitter for Sigfreid and Roy, predict the price of oil in 2012, predict the price of oil next week?

In all seriousness, the first chance this kid gets, I bet he'll change his name. Heck, even relatives of the original Adolf Hitler had their names changed just to avoid scrutiny.

Then again there are parents that chain their kids in the basement and feed them bread and water for years?? Parents that strap bombs on their kids and send them into crowded streets to become martyrs, parents that don't allow their daughters to drive a car or attend school. Parents that bring up their kids as Democrats and Liberals are the worst?

All samples of just how susceptible the brain is to various beliefs....about ANYTHING if you catch them at the right time of development/vulnerability. Indoctrination, brainwashing, socialization.....call it what you will. I mean where does something as simple as being a die-hard Habs' fan (or any sports team) come into play? Most of us would never cheer for the Leafs...EVER. It's tattooed on the brain somewhere....and it would take quite a process to remove it. Now, let's talk about politics, religions, nationalities...etc.

ArticleInteresting lines. ....their home is decorated with swastikas. Heath, 35, speaking about the cake furore, urged people needed to be more tolerant..
"They're just names, you know," he said.
"Yeah, they (the Nazis) were bad people back then. But my kids are little. They're not going to grow up like that." So, they're not bad now, eh Heath. And how would you know that? Maybe you ran into some nice neo-Nazis at the Swastika Decorating Shop? That's one house you won't see on "Trading Spaces". ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The parents still have grounds to fight it, though. They say they're not racists....and there have been no signs of abuse or negligence. I think the kids are better off away from that kind of community. But I wonder what term the Youth and Family Services will use to describe why the children were in danger. I really do.
