During the telecast last night, Demers said that he spoke with Gainey earlier and Gainey said to him that he was looking for a d-man and not a forward. Demers said that he believes Bob will trade for a d-man soon after the trade freeze is lifted.
Jay-Bo is on the block and would be my first choice, however Bouchard iterated that Gainey should look at someone like Jordon Leopold from the Avs that is on the block.
Who would you want?

If he's after a dman it's obvious to me that he's looking for a point presence on the PP. I don't really think of Leopold or Jbo as that presence.

Bouwmeester: 6-12-18; +3 . . . #1 d-man
Leopold: 5-7-12; -6 . . . #4-5 d-man [don't we have a plethora of those already?]

It won't be JayBo, and I honestly hope it isn't.
But hey, I was wrong about Sundin. Maybe JayBo is that elusive third left defenseman we've been looking for.

...I don't think Gainey will swing for the fence and get a really BIG name a la JayBo.
I'd put my bet on a guy like Tom Preissing. In fact I'd bet right on him.

Another guy like Gorges, and I'd be pretty happy.

Yep, and while he's at it he can get a gritty forward in the Laperriere mould....

Is Preissing still in LA? He was a solid PP guy in Ott when they had the glut of guys.

Not a lot of flash . . . just consistent work. He's in LA, not having a banner year . . . but then again, who is? 3-4-7; -5; 6PIM

I hear Toronto may have a D-man or 2 available.

How's his shot?

Apparently they're expecting him to sign an RFA sheet, and would move him for the right price. It doesn't help he's injured for pretty much the whole season right now, but something to consider for sure.

THF I don't know if Bouwmeester is really on the block. Everything I have read indicates that Florida is trying hard to impress him enough to stay. As for Leopold - the guy who writes the Daily Hab-it blog has been pushing Leopold & I don't know why. Maybe Bouchard reads the same blog. The guy is just not impressive. In the last 6 years he has played one full season & topped out at 33 points.

How about Derek Morris? He's earning slightly under $4M and is a UFA after this season.

Maybe it's simply because he's from Minnesota that people believe the Habs have interest in him, who knows?

Bouwmeester has just as many PP points as Markov .... Sure, but he's not the presence we need on it. We need that weapon that creates space for Kovalev. Kovy drove the bus for 2 years, but the cannon from the point gave him the space to do it. Bouwmeester isn't going to put fear in anyone to give Alex more space.

I saw Derek Morris when he played for Calgary. Hopefully he's older and wiser, 'cos when he was here, he was the most error-prone d-man on the team. I like his aggressiveness, but his positioning left a lot to be desired. Obviously Calgary and Colorado felt the same.

Plus PHX traded Boynton & Ballard to get Olli Jokinen. I don't know what their depth on D is like. The Coyotes are having financial problems so I would think they are more anxious to rid themselves of someone that has some contract left, not a pending UFA.
Jovanoski comes to mind. He is 32 & has 2 years left at 6 million per. I don't know him well enough to know if he's worth that kind of cash or even if they want to move him but if the Coyotes want to shed dollars I think he's be the guy.

IMO Jovo is a pylon. I always saw him as a bigger liability than a Souray, without the accurate shot. Phoenix would have to eat half his salary before I'd even consider him.

Agreed blny, not a fan of Souray (or Morris for that matter). As for the eating salary thing, it's not possible under the CBA. You can't trade cash or pay for a portion of a player's salary as a part of a trade.

There are few that have a shot as hard as Souray's and as accurate. I think he's a better leader than Jovo too.
