I like Boucher's style. The way you force mistakes is to aggressively pursue the puck. Of course, you have to be in great shape to do that, and you have to be skilled enough to win games by skill when the effort isn't there, as will be the case on some nights, but speed, effort and disciplined positioning will win you a lot of games.

One of my favourite two-way hard working smart guys, Ryan White has some comments about Scotland, Coach Boucher, the Habs camp, and some of the new guys on the Habs. This guy is a keeper. I saw him in the Hitmen jersey a fair bit and always liked his game. Reports out of camp directly from TT are that he is one of the most improved Dogs' players. Sounds good to me! www.habsworld.net/article.php?id=1846

Some more first hand reports out of Scotland. A little insight into Mike Glumac and David Desharnais' impressions, and rest assured some confirmation that Guy Boucher will not take the foot off the gas all season. Times, they are a changing. I am still sticking by my top two best off season moves: Martin and Boucher! www.habsworld.net/article.php?id=1847

Also deserving of recognition was Andre Benoit, whose shot-blocking abilities will have fans saying "Mike Komi-who?" this season.
Hmmm . . .
I was going to comment that Komi didn't block many of the shots that Lucic gave him, but decided not to.

I know it's only preseason and Sergei was not in the lineup however the Dogs still managed to win 3-0 against the Marlies in their final tuneup game. That would be 4-0 in the preseason and three of those against those baby leafs...boo hiss. Hope Boucher and the boys can keep this going when things start for real on Sunday...against, you guessed it, the baby leafs. PK, Darche and Glumac with goals. Sanford with the goose.

I agree NWT, Martin and Boucher, two huge acquisiitions. I can't help thinking that if Gainey's plan works out, he steps down in a year or two, Martin moves upstairs and Boucher takes over behind the bench. I see that as a decent transition.

'Dogs sign former Caps draft pick Maxime Lacroix. Boucher quote from the Hamilton Spector: "He did very well in the ECHL last year and was a first liner on a very good Quebec Remparts team the year before," said Boucher. "He's all around player. He can play centre, left wing or right wing and that's exactly what we need right now with all the injuries." Desharnais out 4 - 6 weeks with a broken foot. Reassigned D Michael Busto and G Robert Mayer to Cincinnati. Released F Felix Petit. www.hamiltonbulldogs.com/article/hamilton-bulldogs-sign-forward-maxime-lacroix Alex Henry (defence). Has had the cast removed on the broken bone in his left hand but is probably still a month away from playing. Dany Masse (left wing). Has had knee surgery and is not expected back before Christmas. Olivier Fortier (centre). Having shoulder surgery next week and will miss four months. Tom Pyatt (centre). Has a concussion and is considered day-to-day. Mikael Johansson (centre). Suffered a groin injury that was being assessed yesterday by doctors. No return date set. Add to that Kostitsyn's absense and probable callup by the Habs with the Markov injury. This is all before the Dogs play their first game of the seaon. www.thespec.com/Sports/article/646776

IMO, that would be awful. Martin has been a brutal GM in Florida. Why would we want him in that position for us?

Desharnais is a key piece to that offense and I expect Johansson and Pyatt will be important players with the Dogs this season.

IMO, that would be awful. Martin has been a brutal GM in Florida. Why would we want him in that position for us? And how was he a brutal GM? Personally, I like his suits and the cut of his jib. I also like his suits, actually. He has good taste. But wouldn't you want to see them more? If he's just the coach, he'll get more camera action! I should say I shouldn't have used the word "brutal." I'll soften my stance. That being said, his very small record doesn't suggest he's very good. He wasn't able to build the team very successfully -- to any real degree of improvement -- in his two seasons as GM, and short of the Panthers becoming world beaters and making the playoffs this year, I don't know why we'd hire him. The one thing I will give him credit for is getting something back for his assets. Bertuzzi and Bouwmeester in particular. I just don't like the guys that he signs and trades for to fill holes. Perhaps with a greater budget he could do better, but I'm not very convinced. The team finished with 86 points in 06-07 (Martin's first as GM, but we'll give him a pass since that team was "built" by Keenan) 07-08: 85 points 08-09: 93 points Now again, we'll see how they do this season. It's definitely his collection of players at this point. Some trade history: Gary Roberts and Joel Kwiatkowski to Pens for Noah Welch ('07 deadline) Bertuzzi to Detroit for Shawn Matthias and conditional picks ('07 deadline) Acquired Vokoun for a 1st, 2nd, and another conditional 2nd ('07 draft) Ruslan Salei to Avalanche for Karlis Skrastins ('08 deadline) Acquired Wade Belak for a 5th ('08 deadline) .... seriously.. Belak to Nashville for Nick Tarnasky ('09 deadline) Noah Welch and 3rd to Tampa for Steve Eminger ('09 deadline) Bouwmeester to Calgary for Jordan Leopold and a 3rd (June '09) As jkr points out below, this was not Martin. Some wins, some losses, but nothing to rave about IMO. The results on the ice are the same.

Red,
Bouwmeester's rights were traded to Calgary just before free agency & I'm pretty sure the Habs had hired Martin by then. The date I found for his hiring was June 1.
I think Randy Sexton did the Bouwmeester deal.

For any Bulldogs fans who live in the Toronto area the season opener will be on RogersTV Cable 10&63 Toronto. Not sure if anybody outside the GTA gets this channell? Should be great to see Subban's debut today.

After owning the Marlies in the pre-season, the Baby Leafs got a little revenge today beating the Dogs 3-2 in a shootout. Good effort by the boys, but just a tad short today.
Wyman and Trotter with the goals, Sanford with the loss.

Ya .......Sanford played a great game but he was terrible in the shootout. Out of the six shots he faced in the shootout 5 got by him.
Trotter played great in the offensive zone and I expect a good year from him.
Subban played ok. No bad defensive miscues and looked great with the puck on his stick. Saw him playing both the PK and PP.
As for the team in general it was very sloppy game but very physical especially on the Marlies part. The lines looked something like:
Russell Maxwell Darche White Trottier Glumac Conboy Lacroix Wyman Pyatt Neilson
Benoit Carle Anderson Belle St.Denis Subban
*Hamilton only dressed 19 because of Weber being recalled

Dogs home opener tonight was a resounding success. Almost 6200 in the stands to witness a scoreless game going into the third...and the Dogs got three to take two points from Rockford tonight in a 3-0 Sanford shutout. Conboy, White and Pyatt with the goals. Whitey had a good game with a 1+1 game. Sergei was quiet tonight (there's a change). MAB got to get a game in with the Dogs, not sure if that will vault him to the big club right away as the Dogs don't play again for another week...so might as well train with the big boys. theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1006079

Dogs game tonight was decent. Team played hard for the most part. First period they came out hitting hard and had a ton of chances. Second period they took a step back. Third period they picked it up again and dominated the score sheet.
Sandford was great. All around solid game. Played his angles well and controlled the rebounds.
Mathieu Darche, the captain, was pretty soft. I wasn't very impressed.
P.K. is a charaacter. He wants to score so badly and his skating is excellent. Good shot. Cool head. Doesn't get pushed around. The 'P.K. in the U.K.' skits that they are doing are amusing. Dude is fun to watch. Solid game. His pairing with Shawn Belle makes tons of sense. Offense and defensive toughness paired together is always good.
Ben Maxwell had a ton of shots on net and skated hard from start to finish.
Sergei was okay. He was trying and not floating at all. He was soundly booed during the introductions.
Mathieu Carle is a long ways away from the NHL. He made some poor decisions during the game. His shot isn't there yet.
Power play was terrible, but the penalty killing was fantastic.
Good crowd and I don't care what anybody says...Copps Coliseum french fries might be the best arena fries. And Bruiser is the most entertaining mascot around.

This was posted on habs i/o by some who went to the home opener.
Just in from the Bulldog's 3-0 whitewashing of Rockford. My bum thaks the folks at Copps Coliseum for fully replacing and upgrading the original seating in the lower bowl.
Curtis Sanford was the first star. He looked very solid, stopping a number of point-blank chances. 18 saves in the first period.
P.K. Subban is a star in the making... and that's without scoring a point. There's something about him that draws your eye toward him even when he doesn't have the puck. Very smooth skater, and is probably faster backwards than most AHL'ers are forward. He had a number of good rushes, though sometimes he's got to play within himself. He also showed some feistiness in taking a roughing penalty while goading a Rockford player into one.
Sergei Kostitsyn was booed lustily by the Hab fans in the crowd during the opening ceremony. The look on his face said, "Yeah, I expected that." He looked a little rusty, expected sisnce he hasn't played a lot of healthy hockey lately. Still, it was apparent that he's got the goods to get it done with the big club. He's just got to apply himself.
Marc-Andre Bergeron has a cannon from the point, though he only unleashed a couple tonight. His wrist shot was accurate and quick. A couple of assists tonight. I could see him getting another game or two in Hamilton to build up his stamina, but he will be a welcome addition the the point on the power play.
Tom Pyatt was the most noticeable forward. Skated hard, forechecked well, and used his body. Goal and an assist. Ryan White also had a solid game without the puck. His goal was a nice reward for his steady play. Mike Glumac also forechecked well. Andrew Cnnboy had the third goal.
On the whole, the 'Dogs took a while to get up to speed, but Sanford held them in it until they got their legs in the second period. They looked much better in the third; better transitions and crisper passing leading to the three goals.
My only complaint: the idiot sitting next to me that referred to Shawn Belle and P.K. Subban as "the darkie brothers" on more than one occasion. I thought that we were past that kind of thing; apparently not.

Thanks for the game analysis guys.......... I missed the game and wanted to see how Sergei and Bergeron fared.
In the early goings, Pyatt has been a bit of a surprise as he makes the most out of his limited talent and just works his butt off. I think if Stewart doesn't get his act together in Montreal he may face some competion.

Like you said, he worked his butt off every shift and appeared to be very strong on his skates and in the corners. He'll be up with the Habs soon enough.

He is a nice surprise from the Gomez trade and my guess is he should see time this season in Montreal this season.
