So, if you are 26 year old Nigel Dawes, fresh off a trade to Montreal where you hope to get back into the NHL. And, you are assigned to the AHL Dogs but get to play your first game at the Bell Centre in front of 14,809 fans. What should you do? Well, score the first goal and be named the game's first star of course. Palushaj had two goals and was named the second star, and Sandford saved 20 of 21 to get the big win and third star tonight. Hope some HabsRus folks in MTL got out to see the kids live. theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1008196

Yeah, I don't think the Habs would be hurt any by having Curtis Sanford as back-up compared to Alex Auld. Dawes has 28 goals in the AHL. Not too shabby. I always liked him, but his size is always going to be an issue. Then again, he's bigger than Desharnais. If the Habs can clear the decks of Gomez and Cammy for example, there might be room on teh big club for another smallish guy. He is a battler anyway.

Dogs crunch Syracuse tonight 3-2. Big win as they are in a four way tie for first, but do have games in hand.
Nash, Klubertanz and Dawes (with the game winner) get the goals tonight.
Edit: The only bad news is Sandford left after the first with an undisclosed injury. Hope it is nothing serious.

The last of the Dogs games on CBC happens this Sunday, March 6th. The first place Dogs take on the fourth place Marlies who are just four points back in that very tight North Division where first and fifth are only separated by 6 points. A first chance to see Nigel Dawes in his new uniform.
Game time: 1:00 pm ET, 11:00 am MT.
Baby Habs versus Baby Leafs!!

CBC is promoting that two of Toronto's prospects (Kadri and Colborne) are in the top 50 of THN Future watch. While the Habs only have one....Leblanc. Oh my, I'm so disappointed. They neglected to mention that three Habs who would have been prospects last year, Patches, PK and Eller, are all already in the NHL and either performing capably or very well. No Leaf prospect is ever going to be as good as Patches and PK are right now.
In any case, I'm not impressed with THN's opinion of Kadri. A lesser version of Gomez, but not yet defensively responsible. He can't shoot. Colborne I know less about. 31 points in 63 AHL games is not awe-inspiring, but he's a big kid and they take longer to develop. To his credit, he has 5 points in 8 games with the Marlies. I'll have to pay attention to his game today. CBC really should change their name to TBC.

Bulldogs on CBC in a few minutes. Thanks for the heads-up. I wonder if Palushaj will be able to make it, I've got a good feeling watching him. Could he be a 3d/4th liner who can score 15 a year ?

I am not sold on Kadri yet. He is a decent player, but not sure how much of an impact player he will be.

Aaron had a good game. Probably the Dogs' best player today. That high ankle strain injury really messed up his season mid-way through, but he now seems to be back to his early season form. Tomorrow is Clear Day Roster Day, so we see who the Habs/Dogs want to have involved in the AHL playoffs this season. They can still have reserves play the remainder of the season or in the playoffs based on injuries or callups, so it will be interesting to see whether or not they name White, Weber, Desharnais and MaxPac to the list. I figure Max is not going back to the farm again. The others...probably some of them for this post season only.

Another fact I found useful was that Ian Schultz hurt his shoulder very early in the season. That's the kind of injury that takes a long time to recover from, and it affects so much of your game. Unfortunate, so I think we need to give this kid more time and more benefit of the doubt regarding his progress.
I agree, NWT, Palushaj, the best player today.
From what I saw of Colborne, he could be pretty good. Amazing size and good speed to go with it. A really nice goal, but you didn't notice him much the whole game, so he's got things to work on, with intensity probably being near the top of the list. Not our problem.

The Hamilton Bulldogs have released their Clear Day Roster of 22 players. The only current Hab on the list is Ryan White, so that means he is the only guy the Habs can send down to Hamilton to play in games for the rest of the regular season and in the playoffs. Pacioretty, Desharnais and Weber/Picard are all here to stay this season and post-season.
The roster included:
G - Sanford, MacIntyre D - Carle, Henry, Klubertanz, Nash, Petruic and St Denis F - Avtsin, Bonneau, Boyd, Conboy, Dawes, Dumont, Engqvist, Fortier, Masse, Palushaj, Russell, Schultz, White and Wyman
The Dogs will have some guys like Bishop, Urquhart and Mayer in residence which means they can play if a Clear Day Roster guy is injured, suspended or called up. The Dogs can also add NCAA or CHL players once their season is over (Leblanc, Lefebvre and Stejskal are the most likely).

I'll be at the 'Dogs game on Saturday in Hamilton as they take on the Texas Stars. I usually get in at least one game a year to check out the best prospects. Dawes has been tearing it up and so was Boyd at one time, although he seems to have cooled a bit. This time around I want to focus on the 'enforcers' like Henry and Bonneau. I really want the Habs to have some lunatics in the lineup for the next Bruins game. I'll provide my best 'scouting report' after the game.

Been a busy weekend so here goes. Schultz was a force all game. Really should have been the 1st star but MacIntyre was very solid in only allowing 2 goals on 38 shots. Both were on goalmouth scrambles with everyone hacking away at it. Can't really fault him on either, the last goal was with 4 seconds left to play after the 'Dogs scored two late goals to seal the win. As I mentioned I was hoping to see what kind of lunacy these guys could provide the Habs but the game was a tight-checking, goaltending battle that saw very little rough stuff. Bonneau was your typical 4th-liner that had a shift or two here and there, nothing really stood out. Henry was a policeman around the 'Dogs net and was a huge physical presence in his own end. Dished out a couple of nice hits and was instantly protective of MacIntyre after the whistes. He's a huge defenceman, think Hal Gill with a bit more speed and meanness. Back to Schultz though, this was his game. He was driving the net, dishing hits and showed some good hockey sense. He scored on a mini 2-on-1 with Engvist, who showed a lot of patience waiting out the sliding Dman and feeding Schultz who slid it home. I really think he has a future on the 3rd or 4th line. If he can fight (no rough stuff in this one) then he'll be able to skate a regular shift and not be a liability. He was backchecking hard all night too. My father in law had no clue who he was and was impressed himself. Knowing that we got him in the Halak trade makes that deal look sweeter to me. Conboy had a good game as well. He banged the game winner home from the top of the crease on a nice play by Masse with just under 5 to play. It had really been a duel until then, so the goal was huge. Then Bishop scored the insurance goal on a great play by Palushaj. Texas seemed like a good team. Didn`t know where they were in the standings but felt they were a top-ranked team. Turns out they`re a couple points behind the `Dogs. Only recognized Brad Lukowich`s name. He logged a ton of minutes for them. I assume Dawes and Boyd are hurt as neither played. All in all it was a great game

Thanks 24. Always good to get the personal scouting report. The Dogs suffered through some weak goaltending tonight, losing 6-5 to Rochester. Hamilton outshot Rochester 43-29, but McIntyre had a weak first period (4 goals on 15 shots) before being pulled. Mayer let in the last two goals. There were some encouraging signs, though. Palushaj had 2 goals, one assist and 3rd star. Schultz got the 5th goal for Hamilton with 3 minutes left and Conboy got 1 goal and 2 assists. Both Conboy and Schultz can fit that enforcer role, so if they can improve to the point that they are solid 4th liners who can eat up 7 to 10 minutes a game, they'd be ideal in the line-up and Lucic would have to keep his head up. theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1008317

Good to see Conboy and Schultz doing well. Their style is exactly what we need on the big club. With Dawes and Boyd out they seem to be taking advantage of a bigger role.

Missing both Boyd and Dawes right now (Boyd has the flu and is day to day, Dawes has that ever popular upper body injury and is also day to day), the two top offensive guys are not available and it has hurt the Dogs lately.
They sit third in their division, just one point up on fourth (which would move them out of a playoff spot if they slip to fourth due to a cross over rule).
All the injuries and callups in Montreal are finally taking its toll.
A pretty important couple of weeks for the Dogs which will determine whether they are seeing post season play this year or not.

Often, its the only way people learn, is for the consequences to be serious enough. Interesting that he gets 10 games, while Chara got nothing. Can we have the AHL deal with Discipline in the NHL?

Dogs pull a rabbit out of their hat, and win 2-0 tonight while fielding only 17 skaters (including 7 defensemen, as they were able to call up Bisaillon from the ECHL to add to the troops). Drew Mac made all 18 saves for the shutout. Conboy and Avtsin scored the goals. Young Alex's goal was with 3 seconds left and the puck actually never went into the net. It was a case of a break away with an empty net, and he was tripped and hauled down. Et le but. What does this huge win mean? Dogs stay one point back of first place Moose with two games at hand. theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1008335Let's see how the Montreal Bulldogs do tomorrow night.

The Bulldogs are back in the thick of a race to the finish thanks to big back to back wins against the Abbotsford Heat. They won tonight 4-1 and last night 3-1, to keep the Heat back in the pack and to edge closer to that elusive playoff spot with six games to play. Drew MacIntyre has now played in 14 of the last 15 games since being traded at the NHL deadline day due to the season ending injury to Curtis Sanford. He hasn't matched Sanford's awesome numbers before his injury, but he is more than stepping in and getting the job done.
The top line was spectacular the last two nights, with Nigel Dawes netting a hat trick and adding an assist tonight and getting a goal and an assist last night. Dawes' 38 goals is tops in the AHL by a nice margin. Linemate Aaron Palushaj had a goal and two helpers tonight and one plus one last night. Both his goals were game winners.
The Dogs now sit one point back of Manitoba and Lake Erie, with six points up on the Marlies with a game in hand. Three of the Dogs's remaining six games are against the Manitoba Moose, one is against Lake Erie, and two are against Abbotsford out in BC to wrap up the regular season. A late season western Canada swing awaits them next week.
Go Dogs Go!!

Life is interesting, in a good way these days, for the Dogs who were on the brink of falling out of a playoff spot. They beat Lake Erie tonight, the team who was in first in the division and had the hottest AHL record over the past 10 games. Final score, 4-1 good guys. Drew Mac back in net and yet another big game. Avtsin with two helpers, and the Boyes (with the goal), Dawes Palushaj line each had one point to keep their collective scoring streak going. Other goals from Masse, Wyman and Fortier.
One point back with a game in hand against the Manitoba Moose. Guess who is next up in Hamilton on Saturday?

Great recovery by the team (see what good coaching can do?) . I supposed it helped a bit to get back a couple of injured or called up players. Cunneyworth seems to be getting the best out of the players. (Devious, aren't I? especially if Gauthier is reading this).

Doggies win 3-2 tonight in a SO against the first place Moose...or the team that surrendered first to the Dogs actually as they are now tied in points but the Doggies have a game in hand. Dawes with both regulations goals (and a SO goal). Drew Mac with the win.
Magic number down to one.

Dogs clinch with a big 2-1 win tonight in Abbotsford, after coming up a hair short 1-0 last night. The boys are now tied with the Moose with 93 points and both teams have two games left...and both games are against each other at the MTS Centre this weekend (Fri and Sat). Get out and cheer them on all your MB based Habs fans!!
Dawes and Klubertanz with the goals, some guy named MacIntryre in net for the win (19th straight start, and he finished 18 of those games).
Habs and Dogs both lock up their post-season berths in the same evening...yeah!!
