Yeah, too many games in a bunch to not let Mayer play. Dumont with three assists had a great game, and Conboy netted a pair and Boyd kept his scoring streak going, but the boys still came up short 5-4 this afternoon. They get tomorrow off and then finish up their Lone Star State visit on Tuesday in Houston. Would be nice to win that one and bounce back with a big win. theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1007790

The Dogs play their final pre-Christmas game in Houston tonight.
Strange, but true...both the Habs and Dogs play a game tonight in Texas. That happens about as often as a full lunar eclipse on the Winter Solstice. My neolithic ancestors likely would have built a stone circle or erected some standing stones in the Hebrides somewhere to commemorate the occassion (the Habs/Dogs alignment). Maybe I will pay tribute by acquiring and consuming a bottle of Fraoch (Heather Ale) tonight during the Habs game, and enjoy the extra few minutes of daylight that will greet us all tomorrow.

I'm saving my Macallan's until the Habs actually win a game. A small note of interest in tonight's game (as we look forward), is that Brendan Nash was +4. He has looked solid in the few games I've watched this year. And he can skate, something some of our big boys aren't that good at.

Did we call anybody up to take Pacioretty's spot with Hamilton?

I liked what I saw of Nash in the first game I caught of his with Hamilton this season. He is big, has decent wheels and hockey sense, and plays a "nothing special" but nothing really bad game. He also has a tendency to do the old Markovian back door play on the PP, so he is not just a stay at home guy. Cornell is a good program and he seems to be adjusting to his first pro season very well. Who knows what his upside is, but I can see why they signed him to a free agent contract. He is on my "watch list".

Did we call anybody up to take Pacioretty's spot with Hamilton? The movement was the other way, as Boyd was sent down after clearing waivers. In addition, both Maxwell and White are back from injury so the Dogs now have a full roster of forwards again and can afford to sit guys like Palushaj and Avtsin the odd game as they are nursing some minor bumps and bruises. Both guys did not play last night as it was the team's fourth game in five nights, so the Coach was resting them and giving some of the fresh legs a chance (like Schultz). Hey JM...that sounds like a good strategy. You should try it with your aging defenders.

Two straight losses after the Christmas break. They lost in a shootout against the Marlies (boo hiss) on Boxing Day. None of the six Dog shootout shooters could solve that Finnish guy for the Marlies. Boyd kept his scoring streak alive though, and Sandford took the loss. Tonight, the boys had a weird one. Sandford left early in the first after suffering what seemed to be an injury. Mayer came in and was his usual self. Game was tied at 3 after 40 minutes, but Don Lever's Chicago Wolves scored the only two markers in the third to walk away with a 5-3 win in front of over 5100 at Copps (where did they all come from?). Dustin Boyd's scoring streak is extended as he had all three goals tonight. That is 9 goals in his six Bulldogs games so far. Hope Sanford's injury is not serious, because if he is out for long..... theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1007814David Desharnais was recognized as the AHL Player of the Week. Peter Delmas was recalled from the CHL so I'm guessing Sanford's status is questionable at best for tonights game.

Peter Delmas was recalled from the CHL so I'm guessing Sanford's status is questionable at best for tonights game. Yeah, Sandford did not end up dressing for the game, so there is something to the injury. The good news is that Mayer was solid making 32 saves for the victory. The usual suspects provided the offense, with DD getting 3 assists in a 3-2 game and Boyd keeping his streak alive with his 10th in 7 games. Maxwell and Wyman were the other goal scorers. If this team goes without Sandford and DD for any length of time, it may be a long second half of the season.

The home and home series with the Lake Erie Monsters did not go quite as planned as the Dogs dropped the second game in Cleveland last night 3-0. They surely missed DD as the team had 7 PP chances and could not convert on any of them. In fact, they gave up a shorthanded goal, the first they have allowed all season. They were tied with the Manitoba Moose up to that point as the fewest allowed (none). Mayer tagged with the loss as Sandford is out with a groin injury, so that could be a little while yet til he is ready to get back into action.
Uncle Festerling made his Dogs' debut.

Dustin Boyd, who was playing without his setup man, Desharnais, had his seven-game goal-scoring streak snapped.
'Dogs are going to be leaning heavily on Maxwell, Palushaj and Avtsin with Desharnais and Max Pac in Montreal. But with Sanford injuried....... it seems to much for them to handle. Guess these holes give opportunies for other guys to step up.
Lapeirre's replacement perhaps could be found within the organization. White, Dumont and Schultz got into fights in the game yesterday. You can also add Conboy's name in for that spot as well.

Not sure what is up there. Schultz dropped his guy in his fight. The kid has jam. Dumont is small, but tough as nails and just won't back down. White is White. In addition to Boyd's scoring streak, Maxwell had a similar point streak going as well that ended. Those lads and Palushaj are going to have to carry the offensive load for a while.

According to The Hamilton Spec, Goaltender Curtis Sanford, defenceman Mathieu Carle and forward Alexander Avtsin have all been cleared, medically, to return to action for last night's game. Avtsin was injuried so maybe that why he missed some games?!?! Anyhow good news as Sanford and Carle are both impact players!!! Interesting article about Brett Festerling as well....... www.thespec.com/sports/bulldogs/article/309046--bulldogs-new-signing-didn-t-see-trade-comingNOTE: Bulldogs new first line is Boyd-Maxwell-Palushaj with Desharnais up in Montreal.

Dogs snap their skid against their old bench bosses, 4-1 against Chi-town.
Wyman had two, Boyd found the net again after a short hiccup, and Kulbertanz popped one from the back end. Curtis only had to make 15 saves....yes, only 15 saves. Sweet.
Keep it going Doggies, as you are likely not seeing any replacements back from the Habs right away.

The Dogs' early conference lead and strong start is now long gone and they are hanging onto the division lead by a shoestring due to some really solid play of late from the Manitoba Moose, and some pretty below average play by the Dogs due to callups and injuries. So, every game is huge and they will need good goaltending to make up for their overall lack of deep offensive threat with their biggest guns up in Montreal. Cue tonight's important tilt against Syracuse. The game's first 65 minutes settled nothing. both goalies end up with a shutout heading into a shootout. The Crunch's JP Levasseur the busier of the two by a long shot, making 46 saves, but Curtis Sandford was solid with his 22 saves, including a huge game saver on a break away late in the third. Nick Bonino scores on the first shootout shot against Sanford, and the Dogs were behind. However, the Sandman closed the door on the final four shooters. Both Maxwell and Avtsin (with the eventual winner) beat JP to give the Dogs an important two points. The goalies were the game's first two stars, and well deservingly so. The Dogs pumped a lot of rubber at JP and he was solid all night, and had some help from his posts and crossbar more than a few times, including a couple in OT alone. theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1007928

Yup, not having Weber, Pacioretty, and Desharnais takes away a lot of offense and skill. Good game by the Dogs, totally dominating the Crunch.

7-0 against somewhat hapless Rochester last game, minus two more players called up to Montreal (Engqvist and Whitey), the Dogs replicated their past offense and matched what the big boys did tonight with another 7 goal outburst. Final score was 7-3 against the Connecticut Whale (yup, that is what they are called) tonight.
Goals by Maxwell (2), Bishop, Masse, Nash, Palushaj and Wyman. Brendon Nash (one of my favourite defensive prospects) had a four point night with 1+3, Maxwell woke up and had a three pointer (2+1), Klubertanz had three helpers, and Palushaj had a two point night. The Sandman had 28 saves for the win.
7-7-7

Funny to hear the old tune the Hartford Whalers used when they scored. Redden and Williams are two guys on that roster that really should be in the NHL, but aren't for a number of reasons.
Some NHL quality goals by the Dogs. Brendon Nash could be a real find. Hard to tell the quality of his skating from what I saw, but he works the point well and gets his shot on net. Has some size too for an offensive minded blue liner.

It's been a while since I saw the Dogs play, but I think Nash is a very good skater. He's smooth, so may not look like he has much speed, but I don't think skating is going to hold him back at all and will probably be a strength. NWT? I know you like him too. I thought he might have the most potential of the current backlinerson the Dogs, and that was when Weber was playing in Hamilton too. I just don't like Weber's work in his own end. A small guy like Gorges for example, has to battle like, well, Gorges for example. Weber hasn't gotten there yet, but I sure hope he surprises me. Weber also doesn't have Gorges hockey IQ. Nash will turn 24 in March, so he's further along on the age curve than I like for a top notch prospect, but some d-men do simply take longer. (I hesitate to use O'Byrne as an example, but it is indeed an example.)
I can't believe he played here in Salmon Arm back in 04/05 and 05/06. I really have to go out to more of their games.

I consider Nash more balanced than Weber for the NHL game. The whole 24 year old thing is a bit of a misnomer, as he was not drafted and played his full four years in the NCAA although he came off a very successful BCHL gig leading into his draft year. I was sure he would get picked in his draft year, as Cornell was really high on the two brothers.
His skating is smooth and just fine for the pro game. I really think he is under the radar a bit and would be a solid bottom pairing or 7th guy, as he really brings a lot to his game right now at the AHL level.

Dogs come back to snatch another two points tonight. Down 3-1 with 6.5 mins left in the third (sound familiar?), they scored two to tie this puppy up (sound familiar?). Nothing settled in OT (sound familiar?), it went to SO (sound familiar?). That is where the parallel path ended, with two of four Dogs shooters bulging the twine and Mayer stopping all four he faced. Palushaj and Boyd sealed the deal in the skills competition, while Klubertanz, Maxwell and Bishop netted the key goals in the first 60. Mayer got the win, in a rather rare start (as one would expect with a healthy Sandford) but this was a back to back so he was not a surprise start at all.
Go Dogs Go!!

Injury troubles and all the callups are definitely paying a huge price down in Hamilton. A top team in the AHL and division leader for almost the entire season, they have now dropped 7 of 8 (including a 5-3 loss in Grand Rapids last night) and are on the verge of falling out of a playoff spot. Yes, you read that right.
They are now in a three way tie for 3rd (or 5th if you look at it that way) in the north division. The good news is they hold a few games at hand, but that does not help if you cannot win them (see their current record above). To make matters worse, if the 5th place team in the west division has more points than the 4th place team in Hamilton's division, then there will be a cross-over. Currently, that 5th place team in the west would be tied for first in the north. Not a good trend either.
Anyway, early season success and all those points banked may end up helping the Dogs sneak into the post-season, and who knows what could happen with some reinforcements from the Habs. For now, it appears as the post season fate of both teams is very intricately linked. As much as Habs fans are hoping for the healthy return of some key players to the lineup, so too are the legions of Dogs fans.
Interesting game note. Dustin Boyd had two assists last night, his first two since being sent down. All his other points have been goals.

Go cheer them on tonight, there should be a good sized crowd.
