Figured our farm team deserved its own thread again this season. We can leave that other for all other prospects.
Our lads are 1-0 going into tonight's play, as they won their home opener 5-2 against long standing rival Rochester Amerks. The Dogs playing only their second game tonight, this one on the road in front of a very large crowd in St. John's including Skilly.
Dogs getting heavily outshot, have spent most of the night in the sin bin (10 penalties to 4), but our goalie is better than theirs!! Nathan Lawson is playing awesome, and we have lit up David Aebischer (yes, that one!).
Goals by Nattinen (his first AHL goal/point), Masse and two from DeSimone (he was recently signed to an AHL contract and his first two AHL goals/points). Trotter with three helpers as he is already stacking up the points in his first two games.
Lawson with a 40 save shutout. 4-0 final. Rematch tomorrow night on the Rock.
Yeah baby!!
Edit: This was an early game as it was in Newfoundland, so Trotter actually leads the AHL in scoring with 7 points in 2 games. I expect he may get some company as some of the later games finish up as most other teams have played more games.

A tight win tonight, 3-2 in a shootout, over Jack Benny's sidekick, Rochester. We couldn't beat the big club, but we can beat the Sabres' farm team. No real standouts from the box score. Blunden had two assists, now with 3 points in 5 games. Woo hoo. theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1008710

The Dogs eke out a 3-2 win over Rochester. The Best News? We have a prospect we can cheer for again. A 'real' prospect, Louis Leblanc. One goal, 2 assists and first star of the game. Woohoo! theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1008740It was Louis' first game, and what an auspicious start. I sure hope that last year's plateauing was due to that shoulder injury, and this first game certainly makes one think that. Welcome to the pros, Louis!

Two things are quite impressive about Leblanc's game last night. First, it is his first action of the season after missing the full training camp and recovering from his surgery. Secondly, his linemates were Conboy and Enqgvist - not exactly offensive juggernauts. That line had one goal each and carried the team's offense last night. We lost to the Albany Rats ( mean Devils) tonight 3-2. I wonder if Lamoriello has dementia? The players on the Devils farm team include Gionta, Leach, Whitney, Berube, Zajac, Gelinas, and Nagy, but none of them are Brian, Reg, Ray, Craig, Travis, Martin or Ladislav. Weird, huh? Seven players with names of NHL'rs and none of them are. There are no Smiths or Jones in there, which I could understand. Gionta? Nagy? Berube? Lamoriello was obviously confused. Or counting optimistically on genetics.

Another loss, this time to Abbotsford 6-2. From what I can make out of the box score, Lawson started the game and left after the first, giving up one goal. Mayer came in and that's a disaster. I can't see this guy hanging around much. The talent level isn't as good as last year on the Dogs. If they can keep in the playoff hunt, and Kristo joins them after the college season is over, it will help, as might Tinordi, if he improves and London gets eliminated early. theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1008772

Bulldogs pull out a big 1-0 win to snap the short losing streak. Palushaj with the only net bending shot tonight. Lawson is healthy again (thank goodness as any games with Mayer in net are a frightening experience, no idea why Delmas is in the ECHL rather than Mayer).

After a healthy spanking to Grand Rapids (8-0) on Friday, the boys rebounded with a 5-2 win against the Binghampton Baby Sens. theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1008848Leblanc had a goal, Avtsin with 3 assists and first star. It would be nice to so this young man start to develop his potential. I always worry about language and cultural issues with young men from Asia. Lawson was in goal for most of the horror show on Friday. Mayer played today and thankfully only had 18 shots to contest, of which 2 went in.

Avtsin has not been a factor in most of the games he has played so far (both this season and last), so let's hope this effort lights a fire under him. He clearly has skill, but just does not work too hard off the puck and really is not all that interested in that little old place called the defensive zone and its ensuing responsibilities. He still is only 20 years old, but you do want to see a more consistent player at some point, so although it is far too early to write the kid off, he definitely needs to at least show the effort out there even if the points are not coming. This was one of the Dogs' games in NHL rinks as it was hosted by the big Sens out in Kanata. The Dogs play two in the Bell Centre, including next Friday night.

A little bit of a strange move, as they loan him to another team in their farm team's (Abbotsford) division. I did like this kid when he was with Spokane and won a Memorial Cup. They were an exciting team to watch. Right now Hamilton is gutted of players due to callups and injuries, so extra bodies are not a bad thing.

The Dogs hope to snap a six game slide tonight against the St. John's Moose (Ice Caps). With so many guys on the IR or in Montreal, it has been a patchwork quilt of players for sure. Just to give an example of how bad things have been, they will actually have FOUR players returning to the lineup tonight from injuries: Lawson (thank goodness), Schultz, Stafford and Dumont.
Just wait until they get Leblanc, Palushaj, Engqvist, St-Denis (and Weber, Diaz and Darche!!!!!) back from Montreal. Then watch out!!

For a 50 game condiitioning stint...yeah, that would work!! BTW, the Dogs finally won last night with some reinforcements in the lineup. Palushaj should help as well.

Dogs win 1-0 with 45 seconds left in OT last night, as recently returned Palushaj showed that he can score when on a top line (at least in the AHL).
The Dogs now move out of last place in the entire AHL with these two straight wins, but are still tied for last in the league with only 8 wins. They are finally getting healthy again and should expect to see LL and St-Denis back from the Habs soon (along with a few others that deserve to be playing in the AHL once guys are healthy in Montreal).

Yeah, that sure was good to see. I guess I have to take a day off maligning him lol. They made it two in a row with a 2-1 win over Rochester tonight. Goals by Avtsin and Blunden. Lawson was in net for the win. That is 4 wins in the last 5 games now that their roster has been bolstered a bit with returns from Montreal and from injuries.

With some of their injured players back, the Dogs have been tougher opponents. They lost to Abbotsford Friday in a shootout and took the second game today in OT. Both teams take 3 points out of 4. Isn't that great math? Three out of 6 is much more representative.

While we can't seem to do it in the bigs, our farm team seems to be able to beat the Baby Leafs. The score was 5-3, and they came back from a 3-0 hole, just 5:39 into the first period. Nathan Lawson was replaced by Robert Mayer, who was perfect the rest of the way. Mayer was the first star, followed by Olivier Fortier. theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1009087

Good sign as Lawson does seem a little injury prone and he also has the odd stinker in him, requiring a reliable backup at times. ps They did manage to score 6 that game. Even better!

Doggies win 5-2 with their new reinforcement Louis Leblanc back in action. Lawson left the game in the third with an injury. Man, that guy has bad luck on the injury front. Goals came from Palushaj (with two), Leblanc, Avtsin, and Willsie.

Dogs make it two for two in 2012 with a 4-1 win over the baby leafs today. Mayer in net for the win, and goals from Palushaj, Fitzgerald, Engqvist and Willsie with his second straight GWG. The Dogs play their third in three tomorrow afternoon.

Dogs make it three in three with a 3-1 win today. Mayer had a get game with 35 saves and an assist. He has been playing well of late. So have Engqvist and Palushaj. The former had two goals, and the latter set them both up. Engqvist is on an eight game scoring streak. DuPont had the other goal.

After losing back to back the last two evenings with Mayer in net (did I jinx him by praising him earlier this week lol?), the Dogs win a big one against the Marlies with Delmas making his first AHL start this season. Looks like his concussion problems are better. Avtsin and Engqvist with the goals in a 2-1 victory.
