The consensus reports coming from the major reporters following the Habs is that Louis Leblanc will miss between 4-6 weeks as a result of a high ankle strain suffered on Saturday night against the Marlies. Tough luck that.

Tough luck that. What is it with the recent plethora of high ankle strains for pro athletes? Is their musculature too much for their bones and ligaments?

The Dogs snapped a 3 game losing streak with a big 2-1 win yesterday afternoon at Copps against the visiting Abbotsford Heat. The Dogs went back with Robert Mayer in net and he had a solid outing. The goals came from guys that you expect to score goals, namely Geoffrion and Palushaj. They have been disappointing so far, so maybe this is a turning point where the "vets" start to lead the team a bit more than we have seen to date. It was an important victory as the Dogs did two things yesterday that no team had managed to do so far this young season: they beat the Heat in regulation and they scored a PP goal against the Heat. On paper, the odds definitely favoured the Heat. That is why you play the game! Of interesting note, 21 year old Russian forward Alexander Avstin was a healthy scratch for the sixth straight game. I guess management just isn't sold on the kid. He seems like the guy who can look so good at camp doing drills, but then cannot get it together in a real game. www.hamiltonbulldogs.com/pressbox/news/?article_id=98EDIT: Here are the highlights from the game. Geoffrion's goal was a nice snipe and his pass/deflection with Palushaj on the PP GWG was very nicely done. video.canadiens.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=66&id=188959&lang=en

Do you want to catch another glimpse of the Bulldogs this weekend? Well, if so, I have good news.
This Saturday, on Sportsnet One, the next instalment of AHL live hockey will feature the Rochester Amerks visiting our very own Hamilton Bulldogs. The game starts at 5:00 pm ET.
The Dogs will also be on Sportsnet One in two weeks (Nov 17th) too.

My observations so far is that Tinordi looks very comfortable and is not fazed at all. Mayer is playing better than I expected and the young guys are generally ok. My biggest disappointment is Geoffrion. What the hell was Gauthier thinking taking him on? Absolutely useless. He has Palushaj wide open and practically takes a slap shot making a pass to him. Moron. If not for his name, he'd have trouble making our ECHL team.
Blunden took a dumb penalty too, which ended up in a PP goal.

Tinordi left too much of a gap on Flynn's second goal. 2-0 bad guys. Still no Dogs goals on Sportsnet yet this season. Lets end that!

Dogs tie it up in the third. Nice feed from Tinordi to St-Denis who blasts on net, Geoffrion goes to the crease and jams it in.
Gallagher snipes a beauty after Holland keeps it in at the blueline and throws it to the slot to little Gally.
This is not a particularly good offensive team, but they work hard. Off to the PP we go.

Nate the skate gets his first AHL point with a blast from the point that Blunden tips in. First PP against Rochester. Beaulieu will be a goodie.
Geoffrion just got his second. We are storming!!

Hey Mayer, that was ugly.
4-3 good guys, four left in the third.
Edit: Dogs win. Gutsy come back with four in the third after being down 2-0 after two. 4-3 final good guys!

So,did Geoffrion really pick up his game or did some go in off his keester? Really good character comebac, but Geoffrion looked terrible in the first two periods. Did he really pick up his game? Nice to see Gallagher and Beaulieu put up points....and Holland as well, of course. I wasn't optimistic after the second, so set the PVR for the Raptors game instead of the Dogs game. Raptors lots, Dogs won. Oh well.

Raptors lots, Dogs won. Oh well. Geoffrion's two goals were both different, but decent. On the first, St-Denis fired a hard wrister along the left wing, that got behind Knapp. Geoffrion crashed the net and got his stick on it to make sure it went in. His second was pretty much all him. He was rushing on the right wing, took the first shot, got his rebound and buried it. The Dogs seemed to flip a switch between the second and third. They came out working hard and after the first few minutes, stopped the parade to the penalty box. After they got that first one behind Knapp, they got hungrier. With a new coach and tons of new players, they don't seem to have an easily defined system yet. It is early though, and I expect it will take some time. They did comeback in the third for the second straight night against the Amerks, so despite their youth and inexperience, they are not rolling over and giving up. Desjardins is skating with the team, so should be back soon. A good starter like Ceddy should keep them competitive most nights. This is a true development year for these kids, so you want to see progression in their game. The kid line and both Tinordi and Beaulieu are showing good first steps with a nice sprinkle of growing pains which is to be expected.

Beaulieu looked better to me than I had expected. I was concerned over his potential to make a glaring error or lose his temper, but he did well on both counts. At some point this year, I expect him to blossom offensively and to run the PP efficiently. I hope that happens sooner than later, but in any case am pleased to see his defensive game as adequate.

A little piece from the Gazette on Bulldogs' free agent signing Antoine Corbin and more general stuff about the Dogs leading up to their game against tough Syracuse Crunch tonight in the Bell Centre. If you are in Montreal and don't already have tickets to the game....get out and cheer the Dogs tonight!! The Dogs played Syracuse earlier this week in NY, and were shutout 3-0. This is a tough opponent, so they will need all the support from the expected 15,000 in the stands to help them in their second straight game against the Crunch. www.faceoff.com/sports/Hamilton+Bulldogs+give+Antoine+Corbin+shot+professional+hockey/7521635/story.html

The Dogs lost again against the defending Calder Cup champs who moved to Syracuse in the offseason, but more importantly they lost Blake Geoffrion to serious injury. He was clobbered by a hit from ex-Dog JP Cote and ended up hitting his head on the ice. He was transported to hospital and underwent surgery. Here is hoping for a full and speedy recovery for Boomer. Serious stuff.
Edit: he has a depressed skull fracture. Overnighted in ICU. Get well soon, Blake!

Pat Hickey is shifting his focus onto the prospects on the Bulldogs and in juniors...good on ya Pat. A little piece about some of the NHL hopefuls that are playing for the Dogs, namely the guys who have already had their cup of joe before the lockout as opposed to the young core that are just starting out their pro career this season. The quote in the last line is really telling. “Sylvain, Patrice (Brisebois) and Donald Dufresne have all helped me,” St-Denis said. “I’ve learned more in one month than I did all last season.” Hmmmm. www.faceoff.com/sports/hockey/montreal-canadiens/Bulldogs+keep+players+start/7549533/story.htmlThe Dogs have been hitting a bit of a wall lately, and the loss of both Leblanc and Geoffrion to injury is taking its toll on a team that struggles to find offense at the best of times. Wonder if they are looking to sign a free agent to bolster that offense as while Leblanc is back skating and could be back in a few weeks, Blake Geoffrion is going to be away from hockey for a while recovering from the depressed skull fracture. The Dogs lost yesterday morning 4-1 to the Rochester Americans in front of over 10,600 school kids in their annual morning hockey game at Copps. The Dogs' Joonas Nattinen snapped the shutout late in the third, to remind fans that the Dogs can find the back of the net on occassion. Hey Palushaj, Boyce and Blunden...time to pot some goals, especially you Palushaj! Huggy Bear Stortini has been brutal for the most part, and local guy Kyle Hagel has not done all that much other than provide veteran leadership to the kids. The Dogs young defense is definitely going through some growing pains adapting to the speed and skill in the AHL right now, as it is hard to imagine that fielding 5 rookies on D every night will not have its tough nights. Robert Mayer seems to be back down to earth, and he actually got chased part way through yesterday's game. Cedrick Desjardins is practicing and is expected to be back this weekend. An interesting twist to yesterday's game was that backup Peter Delmas was not able to play due to a minor injury, so they had to sign some guy Darling from their ECHL affiliate Wheeling to be the backup. Cool that he got to dress in an AHL game right? Funny thing is he had to go in and finish the game when Mayer got the hook. That was Darling's first AHL experience. He stopped all 8 shots he faced.

Marlies and Dogs are on Sportsnet right now, from 3 to 6 EAstern time.
If you missed this game, you missed nothing. The Dogs were terrible. Really slow at puck movement, making judgment errors, poor passing, the whole shebang. Mayer gave up the 3rd goal with a perfectly placed pass to a Marlie. Instead of passing behind his net to a defender who was all by himself, he tries to beat two Marlies in the other direction and created the dagger for the Dogs. Desjardins wasn't the backup so not sure if he aggravated anything the night before. Better to forget this game and move on.

The quote in the last line is really telling. “Sylvain, Patrice (Brisebois) and Donald Dufresne have all helped me,” St-Denis said. “I’ve learned more in one month than I did all last season.” Russ Courtnall said the same thing after only two weeks in a Montreal uniform. He said he learned more in two weeks in Montreal than he did in "x" number of years in Toronto. It also reminds me of when the Voyageurs signed Noel Priced back in the early 70's. Larry Robinson credits Price with a lot of his personal development as well as training the young defence corps in Nova Scotia. Having Habs alumni actively involved in the system also has to help. Right away these youngsters start developing an understanding what it means to be a Hab. Cheers.

They beat the Marlies the night before 6-3, but they just looked lost out there. A 1:32 two man advantage and they could not manage a shot on net. From what I heard about Ceddy is they are easing him back into the lineup. Beaulieu was out today after having a weak game the night before. Not sure what it is about their televised games...they are often stinkers. Young Russian forward Alex Avtsin finally got to play this weekend. He ended up with a goal and an assist on Friday night, good enough for the game' first star. Today he was like the rest of his team...invisible.

The Bulldogs are in town tonight, so I will get my pseudo-Habs fix. The Ice Caps aren't very good this year, so the Bulldogs should take these two games rather handily. My season tix are along the blueline in the home end, so hopefully I get to see some nice Bulldog tic tac toes.
I'll be decked out in Montreal paraphranelia head to toe .... but cheering on both sides.

I can see my seats! LOL That was the exact line-up that suited up last night. I won't go into an extensive player by player analysis, just a few observations and things that went through my mind. The Ice Caps won the game 3-1, but the Bulldogs dominated the play. They outshot the Ice Caps 2-1 (something like 40-20). Two of the goals Mayer didn't have a chance on, they were deflected from close range. The third was a blast from the point by Meech. I never like goals from that far back, and I couldnt tell from my vantage point if he was screened or not. On that note. I'd like to digress a little. During the game on Friday night against Albany, there were two goals that the refs went to video review. Now, that in itself, is not very strange. But it was the first time EVER that the words "the play is under review" were uttered at Mile One. I didn't even know the AHL had video review, just assumed they didnt because nothing was ever reviewed at the Maple Leaf/Ice Cap games. So how does this apply to the Bulldog game? Well the third goal by Gregoire was deflected, but it looked real close to a high stick. Certainly, well worth a look on video review. The refs conferred at center ice, discussed it for a few minutes. And then called it a goal. I was baffled how one night they go to video review, and the next they seemingly do not have that option .... very Mickey Mouse in my opinion. If one game has the capability, ALL games should have that capability. As for the game itself and how the players fared. No one really stood out. I did notice that most of the players take wrist shots, from the circles, or the point. Not much in the way of "oomph" on their shots, but they do get through. It left me wondering if Brisebois is the defense coach on the team. I really like Nathan Beaulieu's and Jarred Tinordi's effort. Beaulieu stripped a guy of the puck at the Bulldog blueline, chipped it over a stick, outraced the Ice Cap defense to the puck, chipped it over another stick, blew by that guy ... raced in one on one on the goalie and took a slap shot from the hash marks. It went wide by 5 feet, but hey, he didnt get that wrist shot memo, and it showed lots of effort. I really thought Tinordi would hit more. Guys were trying to hit him and Beaulieu all night, but they just bounced off ... One guy that impressed me was Brendan Gallagher. I wasnt impressed with his skating, even in practice it looked like he was having difficulty skating. But he was the only guy that went to the front of the net ... and surprisingly, this 5 foot nothing kid, could not be moved out of the crease. I was looking forward to seeing Leblanc. Kinda disappointed about that. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Never did get to say it was good meeting you and your wife. Had a great time!

The official shot total was 46-19, so I guess Pasquale was the difference. Due to the early start, I only caught a bit at the end on the radio. Derek Wills seemed a little frustrated with the result after what he was calling a solid effort from the boys. The reality is that this is a team that struggles to score goals most nights. It is actually good to see the boys shooting more, as they have not been getting a lot of shots of late. Gallagher always seems to shoot from everywhere, but the others a lot less so. You will be very glad to know that Derek Wills just tweeted that Louis Leblanc will be back in the lineup tonight...so you get to see him for one of the games!! I hope they play Desjardins tonight as well. Have fun tonight...and yes, it was great getting that visit in September!!
