Similar to the "rye and gin" topics, I thought I would start a topic to see if you guys have any set playlists ("mixed tapes" for you old guys) that you like to listen to, either while working out, running, driving, whatever.
Here is one of mine (played on 'shuffle' of course):
Long Run 001
All Arise! (The Decemberists) Barton Hollow (The Civil Wars) Being Here (The Stills) Boys Don't Cry (The Cure) Brian Wilson (live) (Barenaked Ladies) Calamity Song (The Decemberists) Come Running (Van Morrison) Crazy Love (Van Morrison) Don't Stand So Close to Me (The Police) Down by the Water (The Decemberists) Friday I'm in Love (The Cure) Good Times Roll (The Cars) The Hair Song (Black Mountain) Help I'm Alive (Metric) High School Friend (Jeremy Fischer) I Need Some Sleep (The Eels) If I had $1,000,000 (Barenaked Ladies) Indiana Wants Me (R. Dean Taylor) Love Song (The Cure) Lovers in a Dangerous Time (Barenaked Ladies) Margaritaville (Jimmy Buffet, Alan Jackson, George Strait) New Divide (Linkin Park) One Tin Soldier (The Original Caste) Pictures of You (The Cure) Safety Dance (Men Without Hats) Sandstorm (Darude) Shine a Light (Wolf Parade) Since You're Gone (The Cars) The River (Bruce Springsteen) We Used to Wait (Arcade Fire) What Did My Lover Say? Sipping on a Kirkland Vita Rain drink right now. It depends on what I want to listen too, actually. Here's a few lists from some of the music I have:
60's/70's Easy Listening (no order)
* Rock on - David Essex * For What it's Worth - Buffalo Springfield * Sunshine of your Love - Cream * Rock and Roll Fantasy (anything from the original album works) - Bad Company * Let's Work Together/Roadhouse Blues - Canned Heat * I Heard it Through the Grapevine - CCR rendition * Locomotive Breath (The album, Aqualung, is all good) - Jethro Tull * Gold Dust Woman (anything from that album) - Fleetwood Mac * Freebird - Leonard Skinner
Heavy Rock
* A Touch too Much - ACDC (lots more from this group) * Enter Sandman/Bleeding me/Until it sleeps - Metallica * Space Lord - Monster Magnet * Open up Your Eyes - Tonic * Reframed - The Headstones * Green Manalishi - Judas Priest * I Don't Need no Doctor (live) - Humble Pie
Black Sabbath Volume 4 is its own playlist for me.
There's a bunch more I never included; Ted Nuget (original album of the same name), Stevie Ray Vaughn is big with me as well. Pink Floyd works. Just have to be in the mood for whatever it is I'm listening to.
I still like the Stones and the Beatles but I hear them all the time.
Cheers.

OK, I'll play along. I've got lots of playlists but here's a few of my odd ball selections from my Ballads:
We've Got to Get it on Again - Addrisi Brothers Tighter, Tighter - Alive 'N Kickin' (actually one of those songs that brings back memories for me) Baby Blue - Badfinger Don't Pass Me By - Beatles (another one of those "memorable" songs) Lonely Days - Bee Gees Knockin' On Heaven's Door - Bob Dylan Elusive Butterfly of Love - Bob Lind United We Stand - Brotherhood of Man Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) - Cher Vincent - Don McLean Harmony - Elton John Without You - Nilsson The Air That I Breathe - The Hollies Time in a Bottle - Jim Croce Don't it Make You Want to Go Home - Joe South Walk Away Renee - Left Banke Suzanne - Leonard Cohen Me and You and a Dog Named Boo - Lobo (I love this song!) Oh Me Oh My - Lulu Go Now - The Moody Blues Donna - Richie Valens (brings back memories of my first crush - guess her name) Wild Horses - Rolling Stones Ten Pound Note - Steel River Love is All Around - The Troggs (the original)
And here's a few from my "Driving" list:
Electric Jewels - April Wine Bad Company - Bad Company Ride Captain Ride - Blues Image I Fought the Law - Bobby Fuller Four For What It's Worth - Buffalo Springfield (a classic) Psychotic Reaction - Count Five Hurdy Gurdy Man - Donovan House of the Rising Sun - Frijid Pink (an interesting cover) Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty (Bill Clinton's got nothing on the sax playing in this) Bette Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes Lola - The Kinks Otherside - Red Hot Chili Peppers The Look - Roxette Copperhead Road - Steve Earle

People tend to hold a special spot for the music of their late childhood/adolescent years, and I'm no exception. That would put me into the mid-to-late 60s and most of the 70s.
I have no set playlists per se. I like to switch it up, but any list is usually a representation from these categories....
The British invasion, Motown, Stax Records, psychedelic rock, Top 40 hits from 1963-79, hard rock album cuts, good funky stuff from the Disco era, and jazz fusion.
I drive to and from Toronto several times per month....so quite often I'll enjoy an album in its entirety, like I used to do growing up.
Among them:
Beatles: White Album; Abbey Road Grand Funk: E Pluribus Funk; Grand Funk (red album) Zeppelin: Any of the first 4 albums Jethro Tull: Aqualung Steppenwolf: For Ladies Only; 7 Monkees: Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, and Jones Ltd. Captain Beyond: Captain Beyond Derek and the Dominos: Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs Billy Cobham: Spectrum Jeff Beck: Blow by Blow; Wired Frank Zappa: Overnight Sensation Return to Forever: Romantic Warrior Wishbone Ash: Argus Cream: Disraeli Gears; Wheels of Fire Hendrix: Are You Experienced Alice Cooper: Billion Dollar Babies Pat Travers: Heat in the Street

One Tin Soldier (The Original Caste) Says the guy with Engelbert Humperdink on his playlist! Hehehe... Humperdink. That's a funny name. I can promise everyone, that there is no Supertramp, Lady Gaga, or Styx on my playlists lol. Not even Suite Madame Blue? Sipping on a Kirkland Vita Rain drink right now. It depends on what I want to listen too, actually. Here's a few lists from some of the music I have: 60's/70's Easy Listening (no order) * Rock on - David Essex * For What it's Worth - Buffalo Springfield * Sunshine of your Love - Cream * Rock and Roll Fantasy (anything from the original album works) - Bad Company * Let's Work Together/Roadhouse Blues - Canned Heat * I Heard it Through the Grapevine - CCR rendition * Locomotive Breath (The album, Aqualung, is all good) - Jethro Tull * Gold Dust Woman (anything from that album) - Fleetwood Mac * Freebird - Leonard Skinner Heavy Rock I like this playlist, though in the interests of total disclosure, and since we're talking about songs you're embarrassed to admit you like (hmm, another thread?), I have to admit that I became a fan of "Rock on" because I saw it on an episode of Baywatch. Mmmmm... Baywatch... I don't know why they had to run so much on the beach... but I'm glad they did. OK, I'll play along. I've got lots of playlists but here's a few of my odd ball selections from my Ballads: We've Got to Get it on Again - Addrisi Brothers Tighter, Tighter - Alive 'N Kickin' (actually one of those songs that brings back memories for me) Baby Blue - Badfinger Don't Pass Me By - Beatles (another one of those "memorable" songs) Lonely Days - Bee Gees Knockin' On Heaven's Door - Bob Dylan Elusive Butterfly of Love - Bob Lind United We Stand - Brotherhood of Man Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) - Cher Vincent - Don McLean Harmony - Elton John Without You - Nilsson The Air That I Breathe - The Hollies Time in a Bottle - Jim Croce Don't it Make You Want to Go Home - Joe South Walk Away Renee - Left Banke Suzanne - Leonard Cohen Me and You and a Dog Named Boo - Lobo (I love this song!) I LOVE your driving list, and not just because I figure prominently on it. Steve Earle is an underrated genius, in my opinion. People tend to hold a special spot for the music of their late childhood/adolescent years, and I'm no exception. That would put me into the mid-to-late 60s and most of the 70s. Indeed. Which is why I always kind of laugh when I hear people say that "new/old" music sucks. All depends on when you were born, I suppose. Much the same response I give when I hear people say things along the lines of "kids today, no respect, blah, blah, blah." Every generation complains about the one before it. Same as it ever was, same as it ever was.

David Essex "Rock On"...Now there's a blast from the past. It was a huge hit when I was a kid in the UK and was played to death on the radio.
Haven't heard Average White Band "Picking up the pieces" in a very long time...
Interesting playlists. Mine is ever changing and usually a bit ecclectic. Not sure how familiar people are with Putamayo, their Latin Jazz and French Caribbean compilations are quite good, imo, and getting a lot of air play these days on the outside deck. Others include John Coltrane's Blue Train, J.Geils Full House and 10cc's Deceptive Bends. Summer music to be sure.

I like this thread. CH, that's one heck of a lot of work putting those lists up. Thanks dude.
Here's a few more just from the music I own personally. I'll add a few songs to the original list:
Crazy Talk - Chilliwack. Classical Gas - Mason Williams.
Here's a more contemporary list.
Locked in the Trunk of a Car - The Tragically Hip (TTH) Blow at High Dough (from one of the best rock CDs ever produced, IMHO) - TTH Trickle Down - TTH Opiated - TTH Little Bones - TTH, Three Pistols - TTH, Glycerine - Bush, Put Your Lights on - Santana, Smooth - Santana, Corazón espinado - Santana, Misery - Soul Asylum.
EDIT: Was listening to Days of the New when I was out and about earlier:
Touch, Peel and Stand - Days of the New Face of the Earth - Days of the New The Down Town - Days of the New
I'll post some more later when I have more time to go through my collection.
Cheers.

Nice list, Dis. My favorite Tragically Hip song is actually the bootleg version of Highway Girl. I don't think radio stations are allowed to play it anymore, but if you can find a copy it's well worth it, in my opinion.
Duster, my J. Geils knowledge is limited to "Angel is a Centerfold", which is a catchy, boppy kind of tune.
My 'mellow' playlist, for chilling out or relaxing:
Angel (Aerosmith) Mountain Top (Live) (Bedouin Soundclash) Lodi (CCR) Pictures of You (The Cure) Boys Don't Cry (The Cure) Why Worry (Dire Straits) I Need Some Sleep (Eels) All the Road Running (Emmylou Harris and Mark Knopfler) If This is Goodbye - makes me cry! (Emmylou Harris and Mark Knopfler) High School Friend (Jeremy Fisher) Long Black Train (Josh Turner) Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen) Storybook Story (Mark Knopfler) Beatles Reunion Tour (Mike Scott and the Waterboys) Alberta Bound (Paul Brandt) You've Lost the Lovin' Feeling (The Righteous Brothers) (You're My) Soul and IAnspiration (The Righteous Brothers) And it Stoned Me (Van Morrison) Rough Boy (ZZ Top)

Good one. I had forgot about that one. As a teenager I bought the album Afterburner (on tape of course, to play on my "walkman" ;D), I like every song of that album, Velco Fly, Stages, Rough Boy, Can't stop Rockin'... Thanks for the reminder, they're going in a playlist for sure. As a most "recent" addition, I really like FUN.

I have over a terabyte of music which befits my wide and whacky tastes. A lot of rare blues that I have hunted down over the decades, lots of Greek, some classical. What I do is load a bunch of music on a 32 gb micro sd and let the software randomly select a list. Then I have another 32 gb micro and load major groups. THANK GOD for smartphones and cheap memory.
If I choose, I start with....
Sinnerman Hallelujah Soft rock from the 70's to 90's

Grew up influenced by a couple of brothers that got me going on 50's music but really "matured" during the psychedelic 60's. Suffered through disco and pretty much gave up on "current" music in the 80's. Still prefer the "oldies" but I'll give current stuff a listen now and then.

Generally speaking, retirement homes are now inhabited by those who were into Tommy Dorsey, Harry James, Glenn Miller, Vaughn Monroe, Sinatra, Jo Stafford, Louis Prima, et al in their childhood/adolescent years.
The next wave at Shady Pines will be Elvis and the Beatles....if it hasn't started already.
In my golden years, I'll likely hear Golden Years coming down the hall.
Iron Maiden blasting out of the dining hall: "Now THAT was music."
Or a chorus line of octogenarians at Tranquility House doing their best rendition of the Thriller choreography. Less makeup required.
In the subsequent generation of retirees...will Death Metal still be cool?

Duster, my J. Geils knowledge is limited to "Angel is a Centerfold", which is a catchy, boppy kind of tune. BC, J.Geils Band was a premier blues band for much of their career. Centrefold was an exception and attempt to go pop. Check out the live version of the song "Serves you right to suffer" from their Full House album. Could be an anthem for Habs fans everywhere. I love Bowie. A very talented musician and terrific live performer. Been a fan since the days of Ziggy. I'll definitely be listening to Golden Years on my 65th. Perhaps Diamond Dogs too. The opening line "As they pull you out of the oxygen tent, you ask for the latest party" might be appropriate.

J. Geils Band. Never got into them, and perhaps should have. Very uneducated on that group.
Only became fully aware of them when their 12th album Freeze-Frame came out in the early 80s, as the band I was in at the time learned the single "Freeze-Frame". A quick scan of their Wikipedia entry shows it reached #4. "Centerfold", on the same album, reached #1. And so did the album.
Must listen to their earlier material someday.

I think I still have the LP's for some of those songs above ;D. The vinyl, of course, and I still have a turntable. As with so many things, they've come around again.
I'm not sure if anyone mentioned the BeeGees "To love somebody". Great song. Covered really well by Blue Velvet. Speaking of Blue Velvet, I love their song, "Like a Diamond Mine"
Great choices there, guys.
