Anyone see Greece/Japan ... 0-0 and I haven't seen the highlights ... Cheers. I watched it...something of a snoozer it was. The Greek captain was red carded in the 38th minute and Mitroglou went off due to injury a bit later. Japan with the man advantage owned possession time, but barely caught a whiff of the net for it, despite much of the game being played on the Greek half of the pitch. Anyway, better result for Greece than Japan.

Greece without a goal again. Scoring is like having sex AND climax. Where is the fun in that? I wonder if I can get a refund on my car flags?

I can recruit faster players with more more energy at the local shuffle club then Greek players showed. Adult diapers optional.

ranked 12th in the tourney? really? 12th? other than Euro 2004, what have they done?
shouldn't be surprised at how they are doing, Cranky. they score in this tournament as often as you do: in 8 games they have scored twice: against Nigeria in 2010 -- their win. other than that . . . nada. the strategy employed in 2004 [hang on and hope for the best] isn't going to cut it here. though they are doing better than England and Spain!

Tough luck for England, who are clearly in rebuild mode. Or will be now. Suarez with both goals for Uruguay who win 2-1. Happy for Rooney to get his first WC goal…but no doubt small consolation for him. It's not like they don't know Suarez. He has five Liverpool teammates on the England squad. They ought to know how he plays & they still couldn't contain him.

English defense looked horrible all night. Suarez could get behind them at will.

English defense looked horrible all night. Suarez could get behind them at will. England have some promising young players in midfield (especially once the old two retire from the international squad)and at forward, but they are still old and slow in their back four. Long overdue a major overhaul. Get the kids like Shaw and others playing. Any fast attacking team can take advantage of them with their current lineup.

Costa Rica beats Italy. Shocking.
That now eliminated England after only two games. Double Shocking.

Like, how does that happen ... how are you supposed to bet on that ... brilliant world-class goaltending ... they missed a blatant foul in the Italian penalty area ... seen diving called more regularly ... at least it was a good goal that decided it ...
Cheers.

If Greece is top 12 in the world according to FIFA then I'm a supermodel. I watched the entire game and all I saw was a team that hangs on for dear life and occasionally goes on the offence.
They are in......but damn, what drama.

"Samaras" must be Greek for 'trip yourself'. I can't believe that's the first time Greece has made it to round of 16. Brutally tough loss for CI.

He was about to kick and the defender planted his foot behind him, as he was following through, his foot deflected of the defender. I have no idea if that is a penalty or not, or considered normal play, but he definetly made contact.

Oh they made contact, but he didn't 'fall' until his trailing foot went into his own to draw the foul.

I have no idea if that is a penalty or not, or considered normal play, but he definetly made contact. It was definitely a penalty. If you don't trust my judgement, German TV has the former world class referee Urs Meier from Switzerland as one of their analysts. He said it was a penalty without a doubt. The defending player put his leg there only to prevent the Greek player from shooting.

really didn't look like a penalty. To me he looked like he deliberately hopped up like a rabbit when he felt contact.

In the slo-mo from the front and side, it appeared that he did it to himself, where it was clear the back shot where he wound up and the player behind him planted his foot during the Greeks kicking motion. As a bandwagon fan, if he got away with the trip, it would be a brilliant "oops, soccer play". Regardless, I've seen paint dry with more fervor. I don't understand the logic of sitting back and killing the clock. Sure, they won the Euro with that strategy but that game and series was considered the biggest upset of all time. Can't live on that forever.

I've looked at that so called controversial play from a couple of different angles and that was a definite penalty. Samaras embellished it as is customary, but the defenders knee to kicking foot contact is a penalty. Location on the field only made it sweeter for Greece though tragic for the Ivorians.

So let me get this straight....Spain is out, Italy is out, Costa Rica is in and Greece is in. It's not only the hockey gods playing with us. Time for me to pick another team to cheer for.

Lat time at the Euro, I was having dinner with my wife on the Danfort when I heard a a full fledged soccer parade coming down the street, complete with the nastiest limericks my virgin ears have ever heard! LOL!

"Greece's recent history in major tournaments consists of things people of the future will probably think are uncorrected Wikipedia pranks".
9 WC games, 2 wins, 4 goals total.
17, don't forget to add England and probably Portugal to the "what in the world" list.

I love this picture.... Caption... Qui? moi? BTW....side story.... I've been hounding my wife to make "galactobouriko", a Greek pastry. Yesterday, 40 years later she makes it, turns out great. Later in the evening, we're eating a piece and she quips "see, I knew Greece will win so that's why I made it". Argggg...... I looked at her, sighed and quipped.........."attention WalMart shoppers, new wives on isle four".

I think I'm left with Belgium, Argentina and Chile. Brazil's too much a favourite and Italy's chasing them for World cups, so I don't want them to widen their lead. France is too French and Germany is too German, Jah? And when I see Netherlands, all I can think of is Holstein cows. Besides, I like Belgian chocolate.

Except for 1966 (and home territory), England have never really threatened to be the best in the world. There's pretty darn good evidence to show they shouldn't have won in 66 either, and would not have if goal line technology had been in place. Anyway, they're not really an elite team, so being eliminated is actually kinda normal. Portugal, too, while being a decent soccer country, is not in the top group and being eliminated is not a surprise. Italy should have been better, but sometimes they just suck. I didn't like Balotelli from the beginning and he proved me right except for about 45 minutes of the tournament. Italy always needs a scorer. When they have a striker, they usually do well and when they don't it's not a surprise when they don't get into the next round. They blew it against Costa Rica. Pompous attitude and they didn't play hard.
