Great push back by the Dutch after going down ... 2-1 final ... well deserved ... another good display of goaltending by the Mexican keeper ... the flag stays on my avatar for one more round, at least ...
Cheers.

Snatched from the jaws of victory, Mexico chokes on it. I wondered what your avatar was. I saw it today on CBC. They did a bit on how demonstrative the Mexican coach is.

I had no idea what coach it was, just that it was clearly soccer. Someone had fun with it, I saw it in a thread of animated gifs, and had to use it.

Cost Rica finds the back of the net ... and they're pressing for a second ... fingers crossed for Greece, but they'll have to pick it up ...
Cheers.

Snatched from the jaws of victory, Mexico chokes on it. I thought that was a harsh call (but since I was hoping for Mexico, that's understandable) on the Mexicans against Robben in the box. Robben is always going down and while the Mexican got a bit of his foot, there was no way he was getting to the ball as he'd pushed it too far ahead of himself. I like to use the same reasoning as they do in the NFL. If there's no way the receiver was going to get to the ball, no sense calling pass interference. Mexico played a really good game and there wasn't much to choose between the two.

Greece with the late goal to tie it up ... into extra time now ... Cheers. Where is Cranky? Thought he'd be here in full force. This is one of those games where you look at how the schedule shaped up and you wish one of these teams had played Mexico and the other, the Netherlands. As it is, one good team was eliminated today and one team is going through that is singularly unimpressive. Costa Rica is playing much worse than they did against Italy. Neither Costa Rica nor Greece is very creative and both are turning the ball over, even before the fatigue set in. Just call me Mr. Critic.

The Mexico/Netherlands game didn't really hook me in during the first half ... to be honest, I really thought it was over for the Dutch when Mexico scored ... not only do they tie it up, but when Arjen Robben draws a penalty and that was that ... glad to see them go through ... Greece and Costa Rica seem to be playing for the shootout (so someone will probably score soon) ... Cheers. Edit: how do you miss a 4-on-2?

I like to use the same reasoning as they do in the NFL. If there's no way the receiver was going to get to the ball, no sense calling pass interference. Mexico played a really good game and there wasn't much to choose between the two. There's no doubt he sells it. I do think it was a foul though. Got foot, no ball. There is a trip. Robben stumbles at the very least if he doesn't sell it. Letter of the law, that's a foul in the box. Were it NHL, there's likely a penalty to both players. WRT selling it, acting, diving, whatever you want to call it, I think some of it stems from one referee and 100m of field to cover. In an effort to ensure the ref sees the foul from afar, players took to selling it. It's become part of the game, for better or worse. I find Robben's play far less poor sportsmanship than guys falling when they get a stray hand/arm up near the face - which the Mexicans did (along with everyone else). Point is, every does it. Some are worse than others, but it's done by every team.

Thought Greece tried hard to seal the deal but they (and CR) looked pretty gassed ... down to penalty kicks ... 2-2 right now ...
Cheers.
Edit: what a save by the Costa Rica goalkeeper ... and CR goes through ...

CR played 40 minutes, including extra time, down a man. Didn't see the red card, but that's pretty remarkable. Goalie was on point with several huge saves after that, none bigger than the one in penalties.

The flag is flying at half mast......while driving around and drowning our sorrows in retsina..... It's one thing to see Greece lose a game in typical fashion, where they're out possessed, out shot and out chanced. But seeing them lose where they should have actually won....a little harder to take. The Costa Rican goalie was full measure for his man of the match designation. big disappoint for the Greek side, but a good showing for them on the world stage just the same.

I don't think I've ever seen as much diving/fakery as I've seen in this World Cup. It's rampant. I guess it's because, unlike the NHL, they're not warned then carded for diving….and the stakes are so high, why not try to fool the ref? Of course, that would all change if the Montreal Canadiens had a soccer team.

I believe it was a Greek player the other night, who tried to intimidate the impending penalty kick taker, and did a lot of yapping. He got a yellow for it.

Belgium up 2-0 but now its narrowed to 2-1 with 13 minutes to go in extra time. The US don't deserve to be in this game at all because Belgium has dominated it, but that never means much, does it?

And some less than clinical finishing by Belgium. When Lukaku replaced Irigo, the finishing improved. The US were very solid defensively, especially in the air. Rodriguez won every one of his headers, I'd say. At least all the goals were solid ones and not lucky bounces. The Extra time was very entertaining.
