I agree with the idea that the economics are all skewed and teams are giving out contracts they will eventually regret. Washington is right up there in that category and you can expect to see the Caps begin regressing. Their new GM either doesn't understand the implications, or is just so pressured to win now that he's making some huge errors. Too bad Washington doesn't have a player we need for our top 6 or I'd be kicking the tires there (they're not moving Ovechkin and I'm not sure I'd want him at the price Washington would demand).
I might disagree with the writer's point about who is a decent player and who isn't. Orpik is grossly overpaid, but he isn't that bad a player, yet.

There should have been a picture of Garth Snow somewhere in that article.

I don't think the owners have "learned" anything at all, to be honest ...
Cheers.

I find the owners to the most liable ... they authorize the expenditures ... Cheers. well, I agree up to a point. the owners authorize, but the GMS think"I gotta keep my job, and the only way to do that is to ice a decent team, and I've gotta overpay so be it" . . . and one overpays and the next overpays and . . .

In addition to too much money being thrown at mediocre players, some of the contracts that players well past their prime are getting are ridiculous. Gionta's latest deal in Buffalo is crazy, and Vinny has made a lot of money lately doing very little on the ice thanks to buyouts from TB and a crazy deal from Philly. It only takes one GM to pay a guy way more than he is still worth and the whole relativity scale gets skewed once again.

You can't blame the GM's and owners. If they don't pay it another one will. A team will try and fill their holes and if need be will pay a little premium to do so. This then creates a bidding war. I believe the only way around this is to have a sloting structure.
Ex: If x+y+z are met than you are in bracket A, If x+y are met than you are in bracket B, If x are met than you are in bracket C,
x = top twenty in scoring y = 1 major trophy winner z = stanley cup champion
etc.....

You can't blame the GM's and owners. must disagree . . . sure you can . . . it's them that's doing it! like you say, the players love the bidding war [though worse is the cap floor that has teams overpay]. GMs need to re member that a cap is a cap, a ceiling. be bold: say that you will spend to 80% or so of the cap and then stick with it. the more I think of it, it isn't the GMs or the owners, its the stupid fans who say pay pay pay and get those players [even if it is second tier guys being first tier money. then we complain about the overpayment
