Underwhelming return for the Leafs at first glance Feels like the joe Thornton to the Sharks bad
Looks like it's a true rebuild in Toronto for the next 5,6,7.... Years...cause that will not speed up there rebuild at all

Think the Pens have enough scoring now? Kessel, Malkin, Kessel, Hornvquist, Kunitz....ouch why can't we make this kind of trade again?

My guess is Toronto didn't want to trade within division especially us...neither does Bruins..... There were rumors Marleau being shopped...with this trade would that set the price lower?

Years...cause that will not speed up there rebuild at all I thought they would give the great Babcock time to work his magic on Kessel. No more excuses for Kessel. If he doesn't thrive with those linemates then I see him becoming the kind of guy that bounces from team to team; playing for whoever can take his contract. Who is acting as GM for the Leafs anyway?

The Pens got Letang at 8 million too so that offsets our Subban. In reality we went with Petry over Kessel monetary wise. I'm with Skilly. We should of spent that salary on offence.

Ha ha, yeah I thought of him first but by the time I went down the list of scores they have, I had forgotten to include him in my text. But.....................he's not much of a scorer now, more a playmaker.

If we didn't sign Petry, we'd has around 12 million in cap space. We'd have room for just about anyone we wanted. I wouldn't have signed him, I thought our defense without him was still one of the best in our conference. Subban, Markov, Emelin, Beaulieu, Tinordi, Gilbert... We'd still have Pateryn in case of injuries AND we'd have more flexibility to increase our scoring.

Letang, Crosby, Malkin, Fleury all in their primes and Pittsburgh is trying to take advantage of that ... Kessel keeps the Penguins contending ...
Cheers.

They barely made the playoffs this year, and their defense got worse today with the subtraction of Martin. Contend for a playoff spot? Maybe. Either way, no excuses for either Phil or Sid. Put up or shut up.

Pouliot better mature in a hurry. On defence they have Maatta, and Letang, Grade A dmen, then a rookie, Pouliot, 36 year old Rob Scuderi, Ben Lovejoy and a bunch of guys. That's 5 guys, 3 of whom are solid, one untested and the rest eminently replaceable by just about anyone. Not the kind of defense you want to go to war with. Yes, they have awesome forwards, but how do you score if you're spending most of the game in your own end? It's a strange gamble. I don't know if its worse to overweight your D or your O, but it's certainly risky. That's why I think they'll change in mid stream and move one of their forwards for help on D. If we can get Emelin playing really well in October and November, who knows?

With Kessel gone….Babcock, with his front-loaded $8 million contract, is now tied with Phaneuf as the highest paid Leaf on the bench.
Babcock is now the Leaf whisperer. Shanahan is the spokesperson.
For a team in a rebuild, they seem to be off on the wrong managerial foot. Not too often you have a coach who has to approve a GM.

And the smear campaign is on in Toronto ... Leafs were sick and tired of Phil KesselBy Steve Simmons, Toronto Sun First posted: Wednesday, July 01, 2015 09:04 PM EDT | Updated: Thursday, July 02, 2015 09:10 AM EDTThe hot dog vendor who parks daily at Front and John Sts. just lost his most reliable customer. Almost every afternoon at 2:30 p.m., often wearing a toque, Phil Kessel would wander from his neighbourhood condominium to consume his daily snack. And now he’s gone. Just like that. The Maple Leafs could no longer stomach having Kessel around, the first player to be both punished and rewarded for the saddest Leafs season in history. The Leafs held their breath, plugged their noses, and ostensibly gave Kessel to the Pittsburgh Penguins because they couldn’t stand having him around anymore. Really, this was as much about illness and insomnia as anything else: The Leafs were sick and tired of Kessel. The world according to SimmonsCheers.

And sometimes I just look at the source of the info ... I find Steve Simmons to be a bit self-absorbed at times ... now, I've never met the man, so I could be out in left field, but I get this impression every time I see him on TV or sometimes when I read his material ... the more controversial the better, I guess ... good or bad attention, it's all attention on Simmons ... I can see him on OTR addressing his 'controversial' article ... oh yeah, I agree that Phil Kessel had to move, but there's no reason to slam the door on him ... Cheers.

Simmons likes the sound of his own voice A LOT, and flip flops like Peter MacKay.
As an aside, that's a nice 1 km commute to the rink each way lol. Burn that dog off no problem lol.

Kessel is an easy target & in most cases deserves the criticism. But Simmons et. al. let a lot of others off the hook. The Leafs would be better served to get someone like Lupul off the roster. They guy is 31 with a 5.25 cap hit until 2018. He's hurt a lot & does little to justify that paycheque.

Problem is that the Leafs are presently BELOW the cap floor by over $1 million. That will come up when they sign RFA Kadri. Right now, their 12 fowards look like this: Lupul, JVR, Bozak, Komarov, Winnik, Spaling, PAP, Arcobello, Panik, Bailey, Holland, and the unsigned Kadri. Ouch.
