That's what competition is all about.

I am actually hoping for more competition. In my ideal world, the Ice Berg also adds a legit top six guy through free agency. The way that Bettman has bastardized the NHL, the goal is to make the playoffs. We can always add a prolific scorer from a team that is a seller at the deadline with only a two month cap hit. We see wildcard teams upsetting higher ranked teams in a seven game series. A hard working TEAM with a hot goaler can grind out wins over more talented individuals. I have always supported the idea that everyone comes into training camp and the best showing makes the team, not the highest draft pick or historical record. I place more value on enthusiasm than experience, as than Bergy and Rien do. If a player had great success in juniors or Sweeden he still has to show it in camp. I agree that competition counts. Once the team is selected out of camp the players have to become members of a team that will work and fight together for the crest. Stamkos is a unique opportunity to add a star without giving up anything in trade except for a cap hit. We have a lot of soldiers who are happy to make the team at minimum salary and cap hit. There is no shortage of hard working rookies and fourth line journeymen. I still like Desharnais but not at his cost. Waiting for Eller to score is like watching paint dry or ice freeze. We need a coach who can motivate and build team spirit, not punish and intimidate (press 1 for French, press 2 for nothing)!

Story says he could go back to SHL if he doesn't make club out of camp. It's likely been the sticking point in getting him signed all along. While I see both sides to it, it still bothers me. If you don't make the club, go to the farm, play, and be ready for a call up. Doesn't seem that difficult to me. I realize they'd still retain his rights if he went back, but it would mean that, if he didn't make the team out of camp, he couldn't come back in the same season. Correct?

I'm not sure what hmakes in the SHL, but I'm sure he doesn't want to come to Newfoundland making $75,000

I'm not sure what hmakes in the SHL, but I'm sure he doesn't want to come to Newfoundland making $75,000 If someone offered me a good job making 75k in St John's, I'd sign on before they changed their minds. I realize it's not Mecca, but it's a great town. If he reports there, he's a likely call up in the event of injury. If he goes back to Sweden, ya he's home, but he doesn't get that call up. If I have to pick between home with no call up chance, or half way in between geographically and a legit call up shot, I know which one I'm picking. It's not like the offer is an AHL contract. I can understand a player not wanting to come for that. If the shoe was on the other foot, and the SHL was the top league and I had an offer that meant I might start in the minors - in I don't know, Norway - I'd do it. Of course, maybe he just doesn't want to play for Lefebvre lol.

That's my take Skilly. He has a choice of Sweden with a championship organization or St John's, a city I'd love to visit playing only the regular season for Mr Lefebvre. It would be a step back for him so for Lehtonen, the Habs organization and we fans, it's a win/win. The only downside is he makes the team and starts on the 4th line.
Who's cynical?

Here is an article from Journal de Montreal on Martin Reway. It talks about the complex situation as he weighs his options for next season. A few highlights of the story: - His preference (of course) is to play in the NHL with the Habs, rather than playing in the AHL; - He knows that being assigned to the AHL is a possibility if he signs with the Habs, but he is still in talks so he can figure what all his options are next year; - The big challenge is that he would likely only earn about $70K in the AHL, where he could make a lot more in Europe; - He has a few options in Europe: Sparta Prague still has his rights for another year in the Czech League but has an out clause, Bratislava has his KHL rights; - He enjoyed the move to the Swiss league as he found more players with more experience, including some vets of the NHL; - He is wearing the "A" for Slovakia in Russia for the World Championships; and - He followed the rough finish to the season by the Habs and knows they could use more scoring. www.journaldemontreal.com/2016/05/10/le-complexe-dossier-reway

I had some concerns but not so much about the money aspect (never thought about it) ... my concern (like a few others here) is what he may expect when playing for Sylvain Lefebvre ... still, it could be more about the money for sure ... a cut and paste ... According to Aftonbladet's Tomas Ros, a sports journalist in Sweden, the deal would see him go back to the SHL if he were not to make the NHL roster out of camp. The summer for Artturi Lehkonen seems to be similar to Dallas forward Mattias Janmark's off season last year. Development camp with the Canadiens, then back to Sweden for the start of the Champions Hockey League and SHL, then a return to Montreal for the rookie camp and the main training camp.

Pretty sure Janmark's 'out clause' was only the first year of the deal as well.
