Taken when Letterman was guest-hosting for Johnny. Letterman would get his own show in the 12:30 slot in 1982. A great book about the Leno-Letterman battle over The Tonight Show: The Late ShiftMade into a TV movie starring Kathy Bates as Leno's unscrupulous, abusive manager, Helen Kushnick. Ironically, it was Letterman who helped keep Leno's career going, by making him a regular guest on his 12:30 show. Leno had run out of quality material doing Carson's Tonight Show....and he fell out of favour for a while. Carson's choice for his replacement was Letterman...but Leno and his manager made sure that didn't happen. So Letterman went to CBS. Brutal show business story. Lost a lot of respect for Leno, even though he was obviously controlled by Kushnick. NBC fired her after taking over from Carson, as she was extremely abusive in her role as executive producer. Leno also cut ties with her in order to keep the hosting job. Leno's style/material never appealed to me. And then he pulled that crap with Conan in 2009. Too much.

One would think the Queen of Punk would've partaken a la Belushi. Not so… “The only thing I abuse is coffee.”“I’ve never been attracted to self-destruction,” she says. It’s the only thing that rings false, because of course she - in her friendship with Mapplethorpe, especially - surrounded herself with it. What she means is that she didn’t partake. “The only thing I abuse is coffee.” She has said before that she did not take drugs because, with a mother who had been very sick, she felt an extra responsibility to be healthy. Now she says drugs are just a lie. “You can have a special experience on drugs, but any artist, any person, needs clarity and health. The continuing use of substances will never enhance your work.”
