... here are Marg Osburne and Charlie Chamberlain from Don Messer's Jubilee ... I can remember my Mom & Dad taking my brother and me to see Don Messer's Jubilee in Saint John many years ago. After the performance my Mom took us up to the stage and Charlie Chamberlain actually autographed the back of my white shirt! I was probably around 7 or 8 at the time. My Dad loved Don Messer.

Don Messer's Jubilee came on just before Hockey Night in Canada ... it was a ritual in our home ... kind of envious you actually met Mr Chambelain ... Cheers.

... Luz Long was a German Olympic long-jumper in the 1936 Olympics who assisted American, Jesse Owens ... (after fouling on his first two attempts) Owens said in 1964 that Long went to him and told him to try and jump from a spot several inches behind the take-off board ... on his third qualifying jump, Owens was calm and jumped with at least four inches (10 centimeters) to spare, easily qualifying for the finals. In the finals competition later that day, the jumpers exceeded the old Olympic record five times. Owens went on to win the gold medal in the long jump (Wiki) ... note, Luz Long was later KIA during the Allies invasion of Sicily, 14 July 1943 ... edit: the two athletes remained friends after the Olympics until Long's death ... "It took a lot of courage for him to befriend me in front of Hitler" - Jesse Owens ...

26 May 1945. Corporal Yukio Araki, holding a puppy, with four other pilots of the 72nd Shinbu Squadron at Bansei, Kagoshima. Araki died the following day, at the age of 17, in a suicide attack on ships near Okinawa. (Wiki refers)Personal note: I remember reading about the terror of Kamikaze missions from the pilot in the top rear-right of the photo (I think he survived the war). If I find it I'll post it.

I remember reading somewhere that near the end of the war, pilots were not trained on how to land their planes!! They knew that they were not coming back!! I can't imagine how they must have felt.
