Zulu (1964) was about the Defence of Rorke's Drift, 22nd and 23rd of January, 1879. Stanley Baker (pictured) played the lead role as Lt John Chard (VC). Baker owned Chard's Victoria Cross (and other medals) from 1972 until his death in 1976. Originally thought to be what is known as a "cast copy", the Victoria Cross was later proven, after a series of tests, to be the original. Unfortunately, Baker died never knowing he had the real VC. President John F. Kennedy secured for himself 1,200 Cuban cigars just hours before enacting the Cuban trade embargo in 1962. Before signing the embargo, Kennedy requested his head of press, Pierre Salinger, to get him “1,000 Petit Upmanns.” Salinger first made the revelation to Cigar Aficiando magazine in 1992. (sic)

this is an absolutely great book that describes what was going on behind the scenes (well, from one perspective). that the war could have ended earlier had egos not gotten in the way . . . Lawrence in Arabia: War, Deceit, Imperial Folly and the Making of the Modern Middle East

I've been on that site for many years now and it will give you the differences between the movie and what actually transpired ... got lost in that site a few years back ... if you like "Zulu" you'll probably also like "Zulu Dawn" ... hope you enjoy the movie ... Cheers.
