Anyone here McCown on the FAN590 this afternoon? He was talking about Stamkos & related a conversation he had with a source. The person he spoke with said he felt the Leafs had the inside track because of some marketing contract ( value around 3.5 mill) that they were going to offer. I assume that's in addition to the regular deal. This contract has been vetted by the NHL and the NHLPA apparently. The frustrating thing about the segment was McCown. He had no details & could not offer any more info. If it's just a marketing deal couldn't any team offer the same thing? And doesn't this go against the Leafs' plan? First trading a 1st and a 2nd for Andersen & now this. Wouldnt that violate the cba/cap?

That's what I thought but McCown says it has been vetted by the league.
If it's Ok what's the point of a cap?
They are all over this on the Leafs board at HF. They had to start a Stamkos thread because the old one reached 1000 posts.

It probably isn't a marketing contract with the Leafs per se, but it could be part of the pitch that Stamkos could make an extra $3.5 million a year in endorsements and other stuff by playing in Toronto. And it's probably true. Stamkos could make more non-hockey related revenue in Toronto than anywhere else. Pitch man for Tim Hortons?

Besides I wouldn't doubt that PK makes more.

I did a little research this morning to prove a fact. Name the last Hab who was in the top 20 in points?
Answer: Alex Kovalev - 2007-2008 season with 35G, 42A, 84P in 82 games.
Before that we had Mark Recchi in - 1997-1998 season with 32G 42A, 74P in 82 games.
In 95-96 we had two in the top 20 with Turgeon and Damphousse
Finally the Bonus question: When did the Habs have someone in the top 10 in points?
Answer: 1985-86, Mats Naslund - 43G, 67A, 110P in 80GP (was 8th that year)
My point being, it's time Montreal shell out the dough and go get someone who is capable of getting into the the top 10. It's only been 10 years since we had someone in the top 20. and thirty years since someone has been top 10 and/or scored 40 goals.

And what's the tax situation in Florida? Must be better than anywhere in Canada.

Therrien? That's a deterrent; not a selling point. Geez, I hope Captain Kirk is there too...... Therrien ? Really ? Why isn't Molson there? If they wanted to put on the full court press he would show up. This is like several years ago when Brad Richards was a UFA. All sorts of teams showed up at Don Meehan's office but it was a foregone conclusion that he was going to the Rangers. I have a feeling that he's made up his mind & these are just courtesy calls.

And it's probably true. Stamkos could make more non-hockey related revenue in Toronto than anywhere else. Pitch man for Tim Hortons? Shanahan needed to get rid of the Kessel, Phaneuf, and Clarkson contracts. He got rid of them. Shanahan wanted Babcock. He got him. Shanahan lured Lucky Lou and Jacques Lemaire into the fold. Their plan was to finish at the bottom and get Matthews. That's what they did. Who looks more successful with a plan, albeit in its infancy, than the Leafs do right now? My guess is if Toronto wants Stamkosā¦.they'll sweeten the pot until he can't refuseā¦ Get a superstar on board to speed up the process a bit by making the players around him better.

At some point the benefits of having Stamkos will be outweighed by what he's being paid. Knowing at what point that is, is crucial. It'll be a different number for different teams and don't ask me. I'm all theory and no practice.

Stamkos deal is $1 million a year in salary and the rest bonuses. $9.5 million total first five years. Then $7.5, $6.5 and $6.5.

$8.5 aav is great number for Tampa, considering this is one of the top five forwards in the game. Of course, it helps that he could pocket more cash there than $10 million per season would have yielded in Toronto or Montreal.
Tampa is loaded with talent, strong management in place. I would tip Lightning as team to beat in the East next season.
