Matthews: Definitely my fault on that last goal...so, gotta learn from that. At least he owned it, he made 2 or 3 mistakes on that OT winner. From chasing Karlsson around the net, to give Ottawa way too much space in the o zone. I don't think Toronto even touched the puck in the OT Yep, fully expect a player of his calibre to own his mistakes. As Dis said, gotta keep your head up when he's on the ice. Without the "protection" Gretzky was afforded, it should be easier to cover him...especially as a rookie. Crosby, Tavares, Toews, Kopitar...they're not scoring 4 per night. The opposition will clue in. The Sens were brutal in that respect tonight. I sure hope it's as simple as "Stop Matthews, and you stop the Leafs" situation.

TSN didn't show any of Ottawa's goals except for the OT winner.

I saw Matthews lose his man in OT and 'cause' the winning goal against. I wonder if Babcock will throw him under the bus?
Kid's awfully good.

I'm not taking anything away from his 4 goal debut, but there are two things to consider.
1. He's 19. He's almost old enough to have been eligible for the McDavid draft. 2. As a result, his playing against men last year has prepared him better than most of his draft class. We'll see where he is after Christmas (as the grind mounts), but he came into the season with a distinct advantage.

sure he did, blny. can't hold that against him.
he's good, and we'd be drooling if he were a Hab . . . much like I hated Gretzky but would have loved him on my team.
he'll come up against a wall -- and against a team that will be aware of him, and can play defense.
it's the love-in and "the Leafs have a great future" ad nauseam that's going to get to me.

it's the love-in and "the Leafs have a great future" ad nauseam that's going to get to me. Wait until Cherry becomes head cheerleader this Saturday....even though they're playing his Bruins. Like I asked earlier--how long before Don brings Auston into the studio and plants one on his cheek? We've got the best president, we've got the best coach, we've got the best GM...and now we've got the best player! It isn't so much a sense of relief we're hearing....just more of the endless boast, regardless of their pathetic record since the lockout of 2004-05. Even though it took a dead last finish to get him....they're the best! Humility has no seat at Leaf Nation's table.

I'd say he's pretty down to earth. His big quote after the game was acknowledging his missed assignment that lead to Turris scoring.

I don't hold it against him either . . . it's the media hacks and fawners that will get to me. yeah, I was getting tired of it last night. Friedmann made a comment that if you don't like how much they talk about him, then you have no soul. No, Elliott, if I don't like how much you're talking about him, we can switch to World Series of Poker (as I did), or play with the kids or do any number of things that don't involve listening to the media gush about Matthews. And I like the kid. He showed great skill, but Ottawa is still learning Boucher's system so there were a lot of gaps in their defensive play. Against teams like LA, he'll learn that some guys will ignore the puck and take the body, which will negate some of his play. In other words teams will give him more respect and play him harder than they did last night. And play him smarter too. For example on the 4th goal, I'd have ignored Nylander and left Anderson to deal with him. Just take the pass away. He'd already scored 3 goals, think it's not his night? That defenceman had a brain cramp. Anyway, he's going to be a star in the NHL. I liked Marner's game a lot last night. Leafs will have some very good forwards in a couple of years. Defense not so much. That will be the pin in the media's balloon. PS. The top 4 stories on TSN.ca are all on Matthews. It starts.

not sure if this falls under the realm of fawning or of I'm sick of it, after all how much hype do I have to put up with before it gets sickening? "greatest Leaf ever"as an aside, they are doing a "Top 100 Maple Leafs of all time" thing, and it appears that Matthews is already on the list.

Is Roman Polak on the list? my anti-Leaf first question is "how can they fill in such a list with a hundred names? my anti-Leaf second response to your question is "probably". my anti-Leaf third comment is "methinks they are already poking fun at the Leafs".

Maybe he can get a job working with a team or the NHL in the future.
