As one-quarter point of season approaches, it strikes me how the West is weaker. To add up numbers, West only has won 41 of 101 inter-conference games. It is early, but there could be teams from the East asking how did we miss playoffs.

Tuned into the third period of the Sens-Preds.
Nashville was up 3-1....and Subban with two really nice primary plays/assists to make it 5-1.
Moved off the left point...took a little drop from Johansen along the boards....then found Neal all alone to the left of Condon.
Then a long pass from his own crease area to find Ribeiro alone at the Sens' blue line, who then ripped it past Condon.
I had been watching Reimer get lit up by the Leafs...6-1. Marner with a beauty, although poorly defended. The Panthers certainly played a lot better against us on Tuesday.
Toronto's going to be a handful on Saturday.

Stamkos to miss 4-6 months. Torn lateral meniscus...arthroscopic surgery.
Familiar story for the Bolts.

Stamkos to miss 4-6 months. Torn lateral meniscus...arthroscopic surgery. Familiar story for the Bolts. Unfortunate for Tampa and the league to lose such a star, but this is an opportunity for the Habs to add some breathing room ahead of Tampa if they would like home ice in the playoffs.

I guess we'll see if Tampa loses a beat.

The media when Toronto struggles: "Why are the Leafs struggling?" Leafs win two games: "They're amazing! Look! See???"

What's going on in Tampa? Dropped 5-1 on home ice to Vancouver.

The metro division shows signs of strength and separation. Devils, Hurricane, and Islanders are close to be cut adrift before half-way point of season.
Columbus and Philadelphia surprise me. Columbus is very good in net, system play, and attitude on top of the size/strength. Flyers success perplex me because after the great first line and a couple of nice offensive d-men, there is just not much there that separates them in a positive way. I see a market correction coming for them as play in net matches career averages, opponents stop giving Flyers power play position to decide games, and puck luck dry up. However they are still likely to be right there fighting for second wild card.
Montreal division is not at all great thus far. Still I imagine Tampa puts things together and finds playoff hockey. Bruins face harder road because they have a lot less material than Lightning. I try not to watch Ottawa (dislike them almost as much as Boston and Toronto) except when Habs face them, so it is hard for me to say what propel them to very solid second in division besides the Andersons great season and having stud play initiator #1 d-man Karlsson.

Didn't see the game but from all reports, Varlamov shut the door on the Leafs last night. Toronto outshot them 52-29.
3-1 Avs.
A late 5-on-3 got the Leafs on the board with about 2:30 left in the third. Likely a 6-on-3 with Bibeau pulled.
Avs iced it with a shorthanded empty-netter.

I watched the game [have Varlamov in a pool and needed a shut-out ]. he most certainly closed the door, some great saves. the Leafs did score on a 6 on 3. wicked shot. should the Avs have been 2 men down? I'm not sure . . . perhaps (again, my needing a shut-out may cloud my judgement]. Leafs were all over the Avs in the third. if it weren't for Price Varlamov in net it would have been another rout. good on him for bouncing back.

Flyers have rattled off 9 wins in a row. They were barely above .500 before that.

Pekka Rinne became the 51st goaltender to win 250 games on Tuesday. Tying Johnny Bower.
Carey Price has 249 wins

Leafs 6-0 over Colorado. The Avs are dead last with a -40 goal differential.
MIght as well start dreams of 1st pick overall in Denver.

Colorado truly awful. Whoever owns that club should consider cleaning house starting in front office.
Ottawa is reducing distance with Montreal.

Saad's gone from almost being a healthy scratch in November to 32 points in 35 games. Atkinson leads the team in scoring. Wennberg has replaced Johansen. 4 guys with more than 30 points, and 3 more over 20. Both goalies under 2.00gaa and better than .930. Gagner's completely revitalized his career. He's a powerplay specialist for them and has 14g and 28p. IIRC, they've got the best pp in the league. No serious injuries. A recipe for success for sure. Have to think the bubble will burst at some point.

Kypreos, Hrudey, and Friedmann making excuses for Andersen's GA in the second period. "How often have you seen him allow a goal from 40 feet with no screen. Had to be the sky in twilight..." Think that excuse would've been mentioned had the Leafs scored one? How about it was a good shot that caught Andersen by surprise? 1-0 Wings after 40.

Now let's watch MacLean and Cherry get in a plane, meet the pilot/co-pilot...take off from Billy Bishop...and arrive in Petawawa.
Quality TV right there.

I had to laugh when Simpson called Andersen's record in December some silly adjective like amazing. His GAA and % are #1, but he's 5-2-3. Sorry, Craig, but that's 5 wins and 5 losses anyway you slice it.

Sorry, Craig, but that's 5 wins and 5 losses anyway you slice it. That kind of nonsense all afternoon. Had to turn it off after Komarov made it 1-1. I knew the Leaf hype would turn to 11. Now it's 4-1 Leafs...and Toronto playoff talk will be pervasive from here on out. Detroit is simply a mishmash of a team. Their drafts lately haven't been nearly as fortuitous as when they got Lidstrom, Datsyuk, and Zetterberg in later rounds.

Mantha ties it at 4 with under a second to go. A 3-goal lead blown in the last 8 minutes of the third.
Let me guess...."The growing pains of a young team...."
The Homer Brothers lobby/hope for the goal to be called back.
Nice try. OT. Leafs had 3 chances to clear the zone...failed.

I watched the Wings tie it up and Simmer was trying to convince the world that Vanek interfered with Andersen's ability to get back into position to make a save on Mantha. Ridiculous. Vanek never touched him before Freddie dove. Andersen was outside his left post and way out of position. Vanek does fall on him, but so does Zaitsev and as far as I can tell the puck was already in.
Hrudey jumped on that bandwagon in the post game. Kypreos was the voice of reason.

Golden Boy wins it for the Leafs. 5th consecutive W. Let the playoff hype begin. Hey, the closer they get, the better imo. Anything to avoid another top 3 pick. Montreal screwed up with the success they had in the lock out year, and missed out on anyone of MacKinnon, Barkov, Drouin or Jones. The Leafs finishing just outside, or even in, the post season means they miss out on the likes of Nolan Patrick. Patrick would give them another large dynamic center, a right shot for face offs on the other side of the ice, and a one-two punch to potentially rival the best. Patrick would allow them to trade Kadri and improve their defense - which is their weak link imo. So, go ahead Leafs. Make the post season.
