Hard fought loss, nothing to hang their heads about. Frustrating as it might be.

Taking a macro view rather than a micro view, doesn't the pattern with this Habs team read - "get off to hot start, then cool off and count on Price"? They got off to that hot start to pile up the points and are now cooling off. They got off to a hot start tonight and are cooling off. I've seen that in a few recent games. Good first period and if they don't pile up a big lead, they start looking very ordinary. Heck, Anaheim's not even that good this year. I can see why Berg might have been going after Fowler. I like his game. Yeah not buying it, sans 10 minutes in the 2nd period where the ducks were better, the habs have been full credit for their effort I think. Nothing you can complain about other than their finish. I think that's the point, no? And that's the weakest team they'll play on this trip.

When the opposite happened tonight, the habs were the better team other than for 10 minutes in the 2nd period, including the 3rd where they played extremely hard. It was a hard fought loss, these things happen, but it certainly wasn't due to lack of effort or being ordinary. Just an inability to finish.

That sounds like something to put on a headstone. "I couldn't finish"

If inability to finish becomes the norm, will MB make wholesale player changes (very difficult to do) or change who's running the show? The inability to finish is not the coaches fault, he's not the one with the puck on his stick but it has to boil down to him... even if he's in the foxhole.

Watching this Brandon Sutter kid really blossom as a big centre in Vancouver. Wondering if Max for Sutter is a fair trade? Max would certainly light the lamp with the Sedins. They could take a prospect or one of the flying softies Mitchell/Byron for Dorsett also and suddenly we get a lot bigger and tougher and give up little in scoring. Alex Burrows will also be available as a rental, this guy is past his prime but I guarantee you come playoffs you'll have another Shaw/Gally in a player that gives 110% and will score some timely big goals, plus he's from Montreal and would love to wear that sweater.
Edit a third player I covet is Alex Edler, he would fit in nicely in our top 4.

Game done. San Jose's not going to be easier. Perhaps not, but if the Habs play as well as they did against the Ducks and are more accurate with their shots there might be a better outcome.

Comparing Anaheim and San Jose isn't simple for me. SJ has only 1 point more and Anaheim had some contract issues with Lindholm and Rakell and both missed quite a few games. For some reason, though, I consider SJ a better team. Maybe its the fall off on the Ducks after the top two lines, or maybe its because Carlyle isn't thought of that highly as a coach. Lindholm, Fowler and Vatanen are 3 good defensemen, but it falls off after that too. That's just my impression because they're close in points, and Anaheim's missed two good players for quite a stretch.

They managed to get their speed game going--mostly. Specialty teams ultimately hurt them, last night. They need to stop feeling too low after giving up a goal; there was a definite change in how they were skating when Anaheim scored late in the first.

I think Anaheim is a much better team than the Sharks, but either way they're large and in charge and the only way for us to beat em is with speed for 60 minutes, not 10-15 minutes.

They knew they had only seconds left. Nothing at the net? That drove me crazy. SHOOT THE PUCK!!!

Yeah I dunno, the norm to me would be having our perennial 30+ goal scorer start putting the puck in the net, along with his two 20+ goal a season linemates. These guys are the reason for lack of production lately, despite that we still have scored the 6th most goals in the league. This isn't a team that as a whole has an inability to finish, it's just the ones that we've grown accustomed to supplying their fair share haven't. We need those guys in particular to do what they've always done and we should be fine. Strangely enough if Galchenyuk (who's been fantastic and is near the top of scoring in the league) can deposit just one of his two glorious empty net chances last night, we're all feeling better about this.

I’m not too concerned about Pacioretty, nor am I in a hurry to trade him. He’s still on pace for 50+ points, and we all know he’s capable of going on an 8 goals in the next 10 games kind of thing. He is what he is; a streaky, sneaky, inconsistent goal-scorer who likes to hide in the weeds until a playmaker finds him for that quick snap-shot of his. It’s why he worked so well with David Desharnais who, when give the time and space, has elite vision. Alas, DD’s time and space has been taken away, so he’s not feeding Max as much. Pacioretty is on pace for 225 shots this year, which is WELL below his career average. By extension, less shots from Max means less rebounds for Gallagher to bang in. So honestly, while Max is the new whipping boy, I can’t really blame him. He had a short stint with Galchenyuk, and since then he’s had Plekanec, Desharnais, and even Torrey Mitchell as his centers. That’s pretty tough for a guy who relies on others to find him. For me Tomas Plekanec is the bigger concern. As the second line center he’s supposed to drive the play, not follow it. And he’s not pulling his weight, which in my opinion is dragging down his wingers. So that’s where my focus would be; adding a second line center which I think will have a trickle-down effect on both Pacioretty and Gallagher.

Pleks and Bealieu for Mikko Koivu. Try and unload him as quick as possible. Koivu is no savior, but he's bigger, a bit younger, and ha a comparable contract. Throwing in Beau is probably an overpay, but I'd offer them at least a 1st or a high prospect.
I agree Pleks has become a serious problem and he needs to drive the play to get the most out of Max.
Or go bigger than that - Duchene, but doing nothing won't work. The best time to make trades is when you're winning and early in the season.

Read elsewhere that Max Pacioretty might be having off-ice issues ... I didn't pursue it because I wasn't sure of the source ... that said, would you entertain Pacioretty heading to Nashville for Ryan Johansen ... I don't know if it would be a one-for-one deal, but it should solve the 2nd-line centre issue ... the only thing that would concern me might be how Johansen handles the Montreal nightlife ... not sure how Pacioretty and PK Subban would work out again ... depends on what source you read/believe, I guess ... Cheers.

I don't think Nashville would do that, Dis. They gave up Seth Jones last year with the clear intention of upgrading their own centre ice position so I doubt they'd turn around and move Johansen without really good cause.

Speaking of No Show Max, did anyone else notice the number of empty seats at the Pond? If the Habs fans hadn't shown up the place would have been empty. Good to know we are paying several hundred a seat here in Canada while they can't give the seats away in So Cal.

Saw Mathieu Descoteaux's only NHL goal ... can't remember if that was the same game I saw Brian Savage score too ... anyway, Descoteaux sneaked in from the blue line and got his goal in close ... that was the 2000-2001 season ... Cheers. Feb 21, 2001 ... Habs lost 2-1 to Vancouver. He got his first point, an assist, in his first game, the previous game in Buffalo. I believe a couple games later he decided to go play in Europe

I think I saw Brian Savage score against Carolina and I think I might have been the game where Carey Fraser and Paul Stewart dominated the jumbotron ... the same game Paul Coffey refused to sign my friend's hockey card ... oh yeah, the thread ... wouldn't mind another crack at Anaheim ...
