The Dogs drop a pair this weekend after that thrilling Friday night 7-6 game in Syracuse, losing to Rochester 4-0 last night and Hershey 4-2 this afternoon. Hainsey had the hot hand in a losing cause with two assists and was named second star. Corey Locke had a goal, hot rookie Andre Benoit had another assist, and Kosty had an assist as well. Turning point on the game was a 5 minute major to Aitken who levelled Chris Bourque behind the net (with a legal hit according to Derek Wills on the radio) and Bourque must have hit his head on the ice and was out for a while. Scary moment for Ray's kid. The Bears tied it up during the major PP and never looked back. Michaud seemed to be playing well, despite the loss. He seems to be getting his share of the starts, even with Conklin down being "reconditioned" and with Deslauriers, who is the odd man out right now. www.hamiltonbulldogs.com/index.php?module=newser&func=display&nid=42

Interesting that 2 of the top 3 scorers in Hamilton, in the early going at least, are defensemen. Has Don Lever lifted the shackles imposed by the Doug Jarvis system, or is it simply an aberration? From what I have seen of Andre Benoit, he tends to play more as a forward than a defenseman, so it will be interesting to see if they try to reign that in, or let him go...

Not to be forgotten is Rocket Ron who is also tied for top spot on the team with 9 points, 7 of which came in the 4 games last week. Shame about that new waiver rule under the net CBA, as it would be nice to see him rewarded with a call up if he continues to play well. I am not fully sold on Streit yet, and with all the forwards getting healthy, the days of 7 dmen and playing Streit as a PP specialist may be gone.

I'm not surprised. I was at the game and I was astonished that he received a penalty at all! It was a hard but clean hit on Bourque - he had his head down and that's why he got hurt.

Superb win by the Dogs over the Marlies tonight, their third straight win against the rivals from down the QEW 4-1. Dogs' PK was a perfect 10 for 10 and the PP found the net three times tonight.
Conklin started and left early in the second with a leg/groin injury, and Michaud came in and looked really good in pitching a shutout for the rest of the game off the bench. Milroy gets his first of the season, Locke ends up with three points with a goal and two helpers, Hainsey looked good in getting a goal and an assist to jump into the team lead for points, Benoit was solid in both ends and had a point, and Kosty had a nice assist on one of the Dogs' three PP goals. Murray doesn't look to have much offensive skill, but his puck pursuit, positioning and hustle on the PK was really solid.

Watched the game last night. Special teams were the difference as the Dogs scored 3 times on the power-play, while the Marlies were shut out. 20+ powerplays in a game, by the way, really isn’t pretty to watch.
* Olivier Michaud looked good. He really wasn’t tested, mind you, but he didn’t goof up anything either.
* How did Jean-Francois Jacques last until the late 2nd round? This kid could looked good. He’s big, he’s physical, and he’s got some mobility.
* Brad Winchester is big. Real big.
* Andre Kostisyin didn’t do much, even though he was on the top line with Locke and Jacques. He seemed less involved than what I have seen from him in the past.
* Speaking of Locke, he’s starting to win me over. He’s still small, and he’s still slow, and I don’t think he’s ever been formally introduced to any of his goalies, but in the opposing zone, he’s ALWAYS in the right place. Mind you, I think 70% of his points have come against the Marlies.
* Ron Hainsey logged a lot of ice time, usually with AHL rookie Andre Benoit (with Hainsey playing on his wrong side), or with waste-of-space Jeff Paul. Neither of his points were what you would call “oh what a play by Hainsey” points, but he made a nice pinch on the 3rd goal, to keep the puck in and which led to a goal he didn’t get a point for. So I guess it washes out in the end.
* Andre Benoit is a nifty little player to watch, especially on the power play. He can skate the puck real well, and given the problems the Habs have been having on the power play, he might be a better option than Streit. Or even Hainsey, for that matter. Both Streit and Hainsey are puck movers, as in passers, whereas Benoit is a puck skater. Wouldn’t count on him for much else, mind you.
* How did Jonathon Aitken ever get to the NHL?
* Best game I have seen from Duncan Milroy. Interesting that Don Lever sent him out to kill the 5-3s… Garth Murray also saw a lot of penalty killing time, but he’s still no Steve Begin. He hustles, but he doesn’t have that fanatical puck pursuit that Begin has.
* Peter Vandermeer… Geez, what can I say? Absolutely nothing.
* Ryan Barnes got I think, 2 shifts. He skated as hard as he could, tried to check somebody, and generally made me feel sorry for him.

By now he must realize that his size and speed are what's holding him back. Not much he can do about his size, but he has to address the speed issue. (Unlike John Kordic who over compensated on the speed issue) Begin is a stud. If Garth Murray is no Stevie B, that's not the worst insult in the world.

Interesting that Syvret got recalled by the Oil today and logged the 2nd most ice time on the team with 18:24, was +2 and had an assist.

As I understand it, that's the next time we can get him up here without having any kind of a wire issue.

Dogs finally lose to the Marlies, but it takes a 6-5 shoot-out win with 20 shooters (I am not kidding) to settle the affair tonight. Milroy seems pumped from his first goal the other night and gets two more points with 1g and 1a, Benoit gets another assist, and Michaud gets another start. What fans are interested in the progress of Danis, Locke, Milroy and Kostitsyn? Montreal fans of course. So why not have the bulldogs play in Montreal where over 3,100 would show up to watch them? We've gone over this before to no avail. I think more Montrealers would show up than Halifax or Hamilton fans. Why not at least play a couple of games in Montreal and Halifax. It would be a special event and well attended.

Watched that game on TV, and Danis was very solid. It was good to get him the ice time, and he will be back between the pipes tonight before coming back to watch the Leafs game from the bench tomorrow night. Gotta like those air miles (and saved salary cap bucks for Saint Bo). Lapierre played a really solid game, with lots of hustle and he scored a nice goal with a solid wrister from the faceoff circle after cycling from behind the net. Coach Lever was giving him lots of ice time and he seemed to have some nice chemistry with free agent signee Francis Lemieux. Vandermeer was well rewarded for his good play and hustle with a goal, and his toothless grin said it all. Benoit and Hainsey were workhorses on D, especially when on the special teams. Hainsey still makes the occassional brain fart in his own end, but he really flourishes in the offensive zone. If only he could get it all together...if only...if only.

Danis continues his mastery over opposing teams this season, as he keeps his NHL/AHL record perfect. I had a chance to listen to the first period on the radio and it sure sounded like the Dogs finally came to play, although the game was scoreless after one. Interesting quote from Coach Lever was that although Kosty was full of talent, that he lacked consistency and work ethic. Man, in Bob Gainey's world, that is murder. The young man better get that sorted out quickly or he may end up watching others pass him on the way up. Too much raw talent to waste, but hopefully Lever gets that act together. He did manage a goal last night to open the floodgates, Corey Locke chipped in with two of his own, and Michael Lambert had a three point night. Lever had Kosty on with Lapierre and Murray, two guys who bring it every night, so if that is what it takes to pass the message onto young Andrei, I am all for it. That class of 2003 is making a mark in the big leagues, time for our guy to join in soon.

Another win Saturday. Danis has another very solid game. stats.theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1001207Kostitsyn's starting to worry me NWT. It's his 2nd year now, the language barrier should be broken and he should be scoring, if not in bunches, at least consistently. He's not. Ten goals in the last two games and he has 1 point. If it's the same 20 games from now, it's tough love time, or time to move him on while his 'potential' is still worth something.

Yeah, I saw the scores and kept looking for Kosty's neme on the scoresheet, all to no avail. He needs to crank it up a few notches, and live up to some of that potential pdq. It was nice to see Milroy net a pair last night, as he has had a very slow start. Maybe he will finally turn that corner. Danis has been on fire since he returned to the Dogs. Three wins and some impressive numbers as he faced a lot of rubber last night. Hope the Dogs keep it going as they head off for a long road trip.

Dogs lose tonight 3-1 to the hot Milwaukee Admirals as Tootoo and company extend their AHL leading winning streak to 7 games. It was close to the end when the Ads scored a bit of a flukey goal off a weird bounce off the boards. Oh well, you take 'em. They then added two more late including a Tootoo empty netter before Garth Murray finally got his first point of the season with a goal with 12 seconds left in the game. Derek Wills was all over the play of Christobal Huet who he said was the best player on the ice tonight. Good news, even though Huet gets tagged with the loss, but it was his first start/game of the season. He faced over 40 shots, so not an easy way to get back into things...unless you subscribe to the Luongo school of goaltending.

Dogs lose another, for their fourth in a row, 4-1 despite outshooting Omaha something like 37-18. Francis Lemieux gets a PP goal to snap a 145.5 minute drought by the team, and a 0 for 27 PP drought. Both horrible stats. When you combine with only three goals in that span of four games...yikes. Huet gets the call for the third time in four games and gets pegged with his third L, against no wins yet in his conditioning stint. Mind you, 4 goals on 18 shots is not great, but that team has to score in front of him. They play again tomorrow night to wrap up this road trip from hell. www.hamiltonbulldogs.com/index.php?module=newser&func=display&nid=74

Thank goodness that road trip is over. 0-5, and only 5 goals scored as the baby boys lose another one 4-2 tonight against the Wolves in Chicago. How long is that bus ride home tonight, 'cause watching Slap Shot 10 times won't heal the wounds from this limpless road trip. Kosty gets an assist and gets five shots on net, Lambert gets a goal, and JDD gets his second straight loss. Vandy gets a bunch of penalties as this game got ugly by the last frame. Not much good to say except their next game is in the friendly orange confines of the Copps. ahl.leaguestat.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1001265

A tough two game road trip to Manitoba against a good Moose team. Last night saw the Dogs (less Hainsey and Cote) lose 7-2 despite Danis getting the call in net. That was his first loss in the AHL. Kosty did manage an assist. Tonight, the Dogs lost a close one, 4-3 in a shootout. True to form, the Dogs had a penalty called against them in OT (is this an organizational curse?), but they kept things going to a shootout. Kosty was the only Dog to score, unlike the Moose who scored a lot in the shootout to gain the victory. Kosty had an assist during the game, to keep that recent point streak going. He is slowly moving up the ranks of Dogs' leading scorers, so let's hope this is a turning point. Dogs head home for two tilts against the Marlies this weekend...Baby Leafs....let's kick em!! ahl.leaguestat.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1001313

Watched the game on PPV, crappy overall game no flow and boring. Dogs defense looked shaky, Paul and Sanford struggled when paired together. Danis was ok but got shelled in the shootout, giving up 3 goals on 3 shots.
The good news was that Kostitsyn had a strong game. It's the most effort and intensity I've seen from him this year, was all over the place with a lot of ice time. Played on the PK and saw time on the point on the PP. Was paired with Locke and Winchester. He got 1 assist while on the point he made a nice pass to Pouliot who fed Winchester in the slot. He was also the only Dog to score during the shootout and wow what a move he put on Centomo! deked him backhand to forehand and in the net with some quick hands. Kostitsyn is now 3rd on the team in scoring with 16 pts.
Balej had a nice goal during the shootout, nice deke on Danis.
I also was impressed with Francis Lemieux's goal, nice give and go. If he can get stronger he should get a contract, works hard and has real good speed.

Dan, I have been quite happy with the Lemiuex and Benoit AHL contract signings. Good depth moves, and made up big time for some losses from guys who they didn't manage to sign (ie, Flood) and those that moved on after some AHL seasons (ie, Thinel). I was a bit surprised they didn't go for a contract with Tardif, who brings a bit of jam and some junior scoring ability. Not bad for him as he now is on the top ranked CHL team, and can still get signed to a PTO once the Petes are done, although that may be pretty darn late in the season given their start, likely later than the Dogs will still be still playing given their start. Time will tell. I think Kosty has put some good games in a row after some less than complementary articles in the press. As he watches his team-mates get a call to the big show, and others in his draft class enjoy greater success, maybe it is sinking in. An occassional big game like the past WJC against the US only impresses the likes of Kyle Woodlief and the Red Line folks. For a real career, ya gotta bring game every night. Hope he has game.
