Pezzetta scores in his Sarnia debut. He has Ruzicka and Kyrou, both fresh off WJC, as linemates. Did not have that in Sudbury!!!

Pezzetta with two more assists last night. Seems to like playing with the Sting!
Our NCAA goalies had good nights, with both getting the win last night. Primeau made 30 saves as Northeastern beat Maine 5-3 and Hawkey led Providence past Boston College 4-1.
Primeau’s last loss was November 18th. Heckuva rookie season so far.

I wonder if this is going to affect Brooks' ice time? I like Clague a lot. Great skater and the epitome of a puck moving defenseman. He was one guy I'd definitely want if we were dealing with LA for Pacioretty. I understand Moose Jaw's strategy, though. The Sault has loaded up as have some other OHL teams, so they might be looking ahead (a bit dangerous) to the Mem Cup, feeling they should win the Dub. Clague evens the playing field. Jett Woo (2018 eligible, likely late first rounder, early second...I like this kid) and Brook will be the top two guys on the right side. Clague and Schuldhaus the top two on the left. They will round out with the Russians Zaitzev and Sosunov I would expect. Brook should get the same ice time. He plays top four five on five, and on both the PP and PK. Given Clague is a LHD, this should only make them more formidable. Seventeen, just an update to this last response of mine to your question. Clague made his MJ debut last night and was in the starting lineup alongside Brook.

Excellent. Hopefully the two will complement each other. I sure hope Moose Jaw goes all the way this year. What an achievement it would be for a small town, and the Dub needs to reclaim the Mem Cup!

This is a bit of a long article so please just use the link to read it. Habs have 2 guys in the top 50. Given that there are 31 teams, that seems to be their reasonable share of the pie. Poehling is #38 and Scherbak (surprise!) is #49. Robert Thomas, fyi, is #6. I have some issues with some guys. Liljegren at #13? Is this a Leaf centric viewpoint? In any case, going from one guy in a top 100 list (Sergachev) to two in a top 50 list is an upgrade. I have higher hopes than most for both Poehling and Scherbak. theathletic.com/194852/2018/01/16/pronman-2017-18-midseason-top-50-nhl-prospects/

Scherbak is turning his game up to NHL ready this season. Lots of non-scoreboard stats point to things he is doing better at this year. I agree it is a surprise to see him listed in the top 50, but I think he is backing it up.

Nikita has indeed upped his game. That's really good to see. The kid has such a great personality that one especially wants him to succeed if only to hear his interviews in future years. And to justify his selection of course. . Turn that 'D' beside Timmins into a B or A.

Doing dinner and a game avec Mrs Dis tonight ... Will Bitten and Hamilton are in town to play Doug Gilmour's new-look Kingston Frontenacs ... I'll also get a chance to see some of the new players Kingston brought in; Gabe Vilardi (LA), Cliff Pu (BUF) ...
Cheers.

Saw Cliff Pu and Gabriel Vilardi tonight against Will Bitten and the Hamilton Bulldogs ... Bitten is all go, all the time ... he set up the first goal of the game with a nice centering-pass ... I was surprised to see just how physical he was ... here's a clip from my Twitter account ... Bitten is #14 (white) ...

Gabe Vilardi with two PP markers in the game ... one 5-on-3 goal ... Kingston had the better in the first 10 minutes then Hamilton just took over until the 3rd ... the Kingston PP looked a lot better than what the Habs have ... that's not a dig, just thought about it at the time ... you're right about Cliff Pu, seventeen ... very strong skater ... this was a skaters game with momentum shifting back and forth the way it did ... excellent entertainment and good bang for your buck ... ... Will Bitten ...
Cheers.

Dis, the physical side of Bitten’s game is quite underrated. I know I read something about his coach last season trying to get him so every forecheck was not trying to put a guy into the third row. Used a lot of energy in making a bigger hit than needed. Also can take you out of the play.
A more physical Byron type player comes to mind, especially given his speed and ability to generate break aways.
There are definite places in today’s game for a guy like Bitten.

He played exactly the way you described, NWTHF ... I have a clip of one of Will Bitten's hits, but it's along the opposite boards ... he had several much better hits during the game and two of them happened right in front of us ... he's not a headhunter a la Cal Cutterbuck or Matt Martin ... he's good at picking his spots and I don't think he missed check last night ... good set of wheels on the transition ... was impressed with Kingston ... they don't have too many draft picks left but the team is a lot better prepped for playoff run ...
Cheers.

Noticed Gregoire in last nights game...best I have seen him play in AHL. Noticed he is a plus 10, only player on Rocket in positive territory. Think he will make NHL bottom 6 someday?

Hamilton up 4-1 after two this afternoon, and Bitten is already 1+2.
Nice breakaway, with lovely finish top shelf baby.
Nifty little back pass for an assist.
And a cross ice pass for an assist.

I think his skating has held him back, but he works hard and is responsible. Coaches like those kind of players. Not sure how effective he would be processing the game at the NHL level. There are also much more talented guys like Carr sitting, so he may not even get a call due to the logjam with better fourth line guys in the wings. I keep sort of expecting him to become a forgotten prospect as better guys pass him on the depth chart. He keeps on chugging.

We have a slew of good fourth liners and a need for young puck moving defenseman that can score at the NHL level.

Jake Evans has been in a little bit of an offensive funk since joining the Spengler Cup team in December. I watched his game on Friday night and it was a goal tending battle that ended 1-0 in OT. He was around the net a fair bit, but no really good offensive chances. He was solid in the face off dot. Last night they won the rematch against Minnesota and he scored the GWG and added an assist. He also provided a great screen in front of the net on the first goal.
Here is his deflection goal. #18.
His assist.

If we do move veterans at deadline like to call up Gregoire for final 25 games of season or so. See if he can keep up to speed of NHL games. He looked improved other night over previous seasons. I watched last Wednesday's game and thought he looked pretty effective in his third line role. I agree about previous seasons, as I was pretty ready to write him off after last year. Your scenario could very well play out. I just wonder if they only make minor roster tweaks if he just ends up buried behind other guys more deserving of a call up. He is one of many RFA's this off season. With the team at only 44 contracts and only a few new prospects likely coming into the fold next season, the team has room to qualify him and see how he does next season. On the subject of new prospects next season, the following are the potential adds: Bitten (he has done enough this season to get his deal IMO), Evans (ditto, although there is also the uncertainty of whether he goes the UFA route), Pezzetta (having a career year in his final year - is it enough? He does bring size and jam as well as some talent when he is not taking bone headed penalties, which he has cut down a ton this year) and Fleury (he is an early birthday so they can sign him early and send him to the AHL. Given the larger group that would have to be signed next season, I expect they could to this just to balance contracts). Some guys like Poehling, Vejdemo and Ikonen could also be signed, but I think they are all highly unlikely for various reasons. Vejdemo will have to be signed by next season and has just resigned with the SHL, so why not let him continue to develop. The other two can clearly gain from more experience at their current level of play, especially Ikonen.

Who the heck in Michael Pezzetta and should the Habs sign him before June?
Well, tune in and get a rare televised view of him tomorrow (Saturday) on Sportsnet at 3:30 pm ET.
Sarnia vs London, get to see Pezzetta playing with Kyrou, etc.

7th round pick, goalie Cayden Primeau, is having one heck of a good rookie season. Catch him on tv on Monday.
TSN2 @ 5:00 pm ET as part of the Beanpot tourney. Northeastern vs. Boston College.

It is too early to sing victory and predict an NHL future, but Primeau sure looks like someone should have picked him before the 7th round.
