Since giving up the shortie, Canada is carrying play. Third period could be tense.

Based on play so far, Sweden’s going to win. Playing as a team, moving the puck quickly, winning individual battles Canada has to find another level.

Missed most is the 3rd but saw #19 (Batherson?) outbattle the Swedish dman for the puck to get it to Timmins who set up Steenbergen for the winning goal. An excellent goal in every way. Kudos to the kids. Kudos to Sweden who played an excellent game as well. Should be able to hand out 2 Golds. Hart gets player of game. I thought Timmins was awesome as well.

Did I hear that right tonight ... Victor Mete hasn't been on the ice for an even-strength goal against for the whole tournament ... nicely done ...
Cheers.

Heck of a game. Very worthy of a gold medal final. Down to the wire, with both teams skating and playing well. Unlike so many others games, no collapse of teenagers that shifted momentum part way through the game. This was a battle down to the end.
This is why I so enjoy the WJC. Unleashed hockey energy.

Who was the Swede that threw his silver medal into the crowd? Lias Andersson He's just young is all ... I think he may regret that, though ... I don't know if I'd hold onto it if it fell on my lap like that ... I like to think I'd give it back to one of the Swedish delegation ... would be sad to see it for sale on eBay ... Cheers.

I saw a tweet that the guy gave it back to the team. Anderson had also ‘won’ silver at the U17’s, The U18’s and now at the U20’s. Perfect fit on the Rangers.

Both our NCAA goalies won tonight, Primeau and Hawkey. They are both doing well this season.
Our WHL defenders all got on the scoreboard. Tyszka had a goal, while Fluery, Walford and Brook all had an assist. Brook now has 16 points and is +24 in 15 games. He looked good out there tonight, but man the Warriors are a strong team. I still have a couple of his late December games to watch at some point.

Nice play by Walford (Blue #7) to join the rush, take the puck at the offensive blueline, skate around the net and draw four defenders to him (what is this....Tim Horton's hockey?) and then set up his open teammate for the shot on net and goal.
A nice feed from the point by Brook (dark #2) to his man open in front of the net, that led to the goal against Red Deer.
And Cale Fleury (white #4), who shows how to convert an intercepted pass in the neutral zone into a nice transition play and set up for a goal the other way.

Some updates on the offensive numbers being put up by our CHL prospects to date:
Will Bitten (Hamilton Bulldogs, OHL): 40gp 13g 32a 45pts -3 (career high 65 points) Michael Pezzetta (Sudbury Wolves, OHL): 35gp 15g 16a 31pts -17 (previous career high 28 points) Josh Brook (Moose Jaw Warriors, WHL): 15gp 1g 15a 16pts +24 (career high 40 pts) Scott Walford (Victoria Royals, WHL): 41gp 0g 23a 23pts +11 (career high 30 points) Cale Fleury (Regina Pats, WHL): 39gp 8g 19a 27pts +3 (career high 38 points) Jarret Tyszka (Seattle Thunderbirds, WHL): 37gp 6g 21a 27pts -6 (previous career high 25 points)
Edit: The Habs have until June 1, 2018 to sign Bitten and Pezetta, and June 1, 2019 to sign the four WHL defenders. It should be noted that Cale Fleury has a November birthday and will turn 20 before December 31st this year, so he can be signed to a deal and play in the AHL next season (2018-19) if the Habs chose to. They did this with Scherbak for example.
The other notable prospects that will need to be signed (or lose their rights) over the next two summers are Jake Evans (Aug 15, 2018), Lukas Vejdemo (June 1, 2019) and NCAA goalie Hayden Hawkey (Aug 15, 2019).

Thanks NWT. I'm going to play GM and let you know I'd sign bitten and maybe VEjdemo of the guys you mentioned above who need to be signed this summer. Not crazy about Evans (sounds like an Agatha Christie novel..."Why didn't they ask Evans?") but that's just me. I wasn't impressed enough with his skating. And Fleury, of course.

Not crazy about Evans (sounds like an Agatha Christie novel..."Why didn't they ask Evans?") but that's just me. I wasn't impressed enough with his skating. And Fleury, of course. This year, I would sign Bitten, Evans and perhaps Fleury early. I think Bitten has done more than enough to get a deal. Evans' below-average skating was really exposed in the Spengler on the bigger ice with a team made up of racehorses (you can see the types of player that Hockey Canada are looking at for the Olympics based on the make up of that team - and skating was a big attribute). However, he is a centre with great work ethic and hockey IQ and we really suck at our depth of centremen. So I think he gets the offer of a deal (if he accepts it or choses to play the market is a different story). I think if he can add strength and a quicker first step, he could be able to transition to the pro game. I am a bit torn on Fleury. I like his upside but I think he can still learn from another year in junior, but there are a number of other players that likely need to be signed in 2019. So, I would only sign him this year to spread the number of new contracts around a bit. This would be a strictly contract management move for me. That leaves Pezzetta, who is having a career year. He was a total meathead last year and spent more time suspended than actually doing anything productive with his team. He seems to have toned that down and is focused on hockey right now. Given the lack of players of this mould in our system and Berg's love of grinding forwards, he could get a deal as well. At the beginning of the season this kid was a total write off for me, but now I would understand if they offered him an ELC. We could have another Connor Crisp on our hands in terms of a guy who just peaks and dies during his ELC, or we could have a late bloomer. We shall see. Vejdemo I would leave until next year. He is having a good upswing year in the SHL and his team has extended him. Let him develop one more year in a top mens league and bring him over next summer before we lost his rights. I think one more year in the SHL versus the AHL can do no harm.

Interesting news regarding the looming OHL trade deadline as a big move has an impact on one of our prospects. The Hamilton Bulldogs now sit second in the OHL, behind the powerhouse and #1 CHL ranked Soo Greyhounds. Hamilton has shown that it wants to take a good run at the OHL title this year by adding Robert Thomas from London (and most recently Team Canada). They made a couple of other moves earlier to bolster their team and offense. This can only be good for a guy like Bitten as his team is now even better positioned for a good long run this season.
Memorial Cup Watch: Fleury and the Regina Pats are hosting the Memorial Cup, so he already has his ticket booked for the event. Brook and Moose Jaw are exploding on offense and tearing up WHL opposition and look to be an early favourite to emerge out of the Dub. They are second ranked in the CHL behind SSM. And now we have Hamilton bolstering its chances as well.

Looks like Sarnia wants to stay in the OHL playoff race too. They are ranked third in the OHL so are very much part of the mix. Our lad Pezzetta gets to be part of a playoff stretch now.

So what does the WHL's top team that scores 4.9 goals a game do at the trade deadline? They get even better. They added WJC gold medalist Kale Clague. It is a great move from Moose Jaw's perspective, and a bit odd from Brandon's perspective. Brandon is third in the Dub and a top ten ranked CHL team, but they also find themselves in the same division as both higher ranked Moose Jaw and Swift Current. Josh Brook is getting a good new addition to the blueline. They also added a very good stay-at-home defender a week ago, which is good as he can be a big shutdown guy as they really don't need any more offense (I cannot believe I am saying that about a hockey team!!). They have one heck of a defensive corps in Moose Jaw to go along with some serious fire power up front. They have a +80 in goal differential already this season. That is just crazy!!

I wonder if this is going to affect Brooks' ice time? I like Clague a lot. Great skater and the epitome of a puck moving defenseman. He was one guy I'd definitely want if we were dealing with LA for Pacioretty.
I understand Moose Jaw's strategy, though. The Sault has loaded up as have some other OHL teams, so they might be looking ahead (a bit dangerous) to the Mem Cup, feeling they should win the Dub. Clague evens the playing field.

The Kingston Frontenacs are loading up ... they just traded for Cliff Pu (London) and they landed Max Jones four days ago ... the Fronts are making a run for it ... I was talking to my neighbour who is a former associate coach with the Kingston Frontenacs and he told me that, in his opinion, Kingston could very well make it to the OHL final ... we'll see, I guess ... Cheers.

They currently sit fourth and top place goes to Hamilton (Bitten's team) who also added Robert Thomas to an already effective offense. The Western Conference is still likely SSM's to lose, but Sarnia did add our own Pezzetta and at least look to try and stay in the hunt with the Soo as long as possible. Just nice to see a lot of our prospects on teams that are going to be having meaningful runs to the playoffs, and likely some that are hoping to go very deep in the playoffs.

They will round out with the Russians Zaitzev and Sosunov I would expect. Brook should get the same ice time. He plays top four five on five, and on both the PP and PK. Given Clague is a LHD, this should only make them more formidable.

Really liked him in the playoffs the year before his draft. That second round in 2016 was amazing. I know we talk about missing Debrincat with our first second rounder that we traded to CHI, but these are the second rounders that went after the second of our picks that we gave them: Giovanni Smith, Samuel Girard, Carter Hart, Ryan Lindgren, Kale Clague, Tyler Parsons, Filip Gustavsson, Dillon Dube, Taylor Raddysh. Imagine having two of that list in our prospect pool right now. I was drooling about that second round before Bettman stepped up and said, “we have a trade to announce...”.
