Another 8-month quest for Lord Stanley's grail starts tonight.
Toronto @ Winnipeg should be a good one.

TSN is already oozing over Toronto.
Their top nine is very good, and definitely the envy of the league. Their defense still needs a lot of work, and Andersen can't falter at all.

The Leafs were remarkably injury free last year. Will they be as lucky this year? What happens if Matthews gets hurt, as McDavid did his rookie year? What if their goalie goes down for a few months? Because we don't have that elite skater (yet), and we have a lot of forward depth, we're not as susceptible to being hurt by injuries (outside of Price and even then, I think Lindgren does a capable job replacing him). The Leafs really depend heavily on good health.

I hope the Leafs do well. I really do. Don't have time/energy for my usual animosity towards them. Same with Cherry....(call Ripley's).
The Bruins on the other hand...
Besides, my dad is long-suffering Leaf fan. He's 85, and is excited once again about his team. Can't deny him that enthusiasm. He's seen me crow plenty of times since 1967...
=======================================
I see Andrew Fingerence (prounounced Fing-AIR-ence) is now a part of SportsNet's broadcast team.
He seems natural enough...but I keep seeing that Montreal salute. Plus his intentional, from-behind shoulder into Jeff Halpern's jaw in Game 7, 2011 playoffs.
2010-11 Bruins. A league-ordained conflict-of-interest goon squad. The "unfortunate" Chara hit on Pacioretty season.

I still have lots of animosity for them. I think Babcock is one of the luckiest guys around. But that's just me being spiteful. Today's game will be interesting. Winnipeg has had 3 PP's, gotten scoring chances, but no bounces. Andersen has been good. The Leafs get one PP, and score. Can't help thinking that is going to be a microcosm of the Leafs season. Getting dominated, and winning by scoring on 33% of their shots. Sheesh.

Sorry, while I was typing I missed the 2nd goal nd now the 3rd. It's 3-0 Leafs. On 10 shots. The Jets have 15.

Jets caught puck-watching, and some missed assignments on goals 2 and 3.

I wouldn't be surprised if Maurice doesn't last long. The JEts have talent, but from what I've seen, their defensive zone positioning is not good. Maybe they're just not listening to Maurice on that point, or they're too thick to understand, but I can't see Chevaldayoff having too much more patience if they have a losing streak.
Coaching is so important. One of the surprises to me so far, have been the Canucks. I've seen two of their games and not all their best players were dressed for them, but one thing that stood out was composure and organization. They looked organized and they seemed to have a good structure. They didn't panic, even under pressure. They have a new coach, Travis Green and that may be the difference. I wonder if that will continue in the regular season?

Mason's getting lit up. Marleau had a week to make a move.

Not pretty so far for the Jets. Pre-season's over. Their PP looked unstoppable in the exhibition games.

Winnipeg imploded in this one. It is not all on Mason, but even setting this stinker aside I see him as extremely average by NHL standards and with no track record whatsoever in being able to be consistently good enough to be #1 goalie on teams with real playoff aspirations.

Winnipeg has played an eternity on the powerplay but with nothing to show for it.

This game could've just have easily gotten away from Toronto early. Jets came out on fire and had 3 straight PPs...but Andersen was getting to everything.
Typical NHL script. The Leafs get a PP on a chintzy hook...Kadri scores. Jets guilty of standing around and becoming undisciplined.
Speaking of a hook....5-0. Mason's premiere is over.
The Leafs can score, that's for sure.

Same ole for the Jets. Oodles of talent, undermined by lack of discipline and poor goal tending.

There were other games guys. McDavid gets 3. Oilers win 3-0. As for the Leafs, I'm with 17. I have always despised them more than any other team. Can't stop now.

Count me in This may be the year I'm forced to move back to NB. I'll be lamenting having to listen to the litany of Leaf losers lighting up the air waves. It's going to be on "L" of a winter for Habs fans in T.O.

Ya I'm seeing a lot more Leaf paraphernalia around town. A lot more of the casual fans getting excited and boasting already. I enjoyed that decade-long lull. Looks like it might be over.

This game could've just have easily gotten away from Toronto early. Jets came out on fire and had 3 straight PPs...but Andersen was getting to everything. He was getting good looks at the puck. It's the same story as it is with any goalie. You have to block their vision and then you have to roof it. The Jet had two great scoring chances early on, of which both fell to Shawn Matthias and he nailed Andersen in the crest each time. I could have taken better shots than that, so it's a pretty low bar.

Ovechkin with 3 goals against Ottawa ... Passes Guy Lafleur (560) and moves into a tie with Mike Modano (561).
He is now 24th all time ... Imagine if he didn't lose that strike season when he was drafted

Penguins off to an 0-2 start. Gave up ten goals in a 10-1 loss in Chicago after losing 5-4 to the Jackets. Letang is -7! lol Crosby was interviewed post-game last night and he's already 'embarrassed'.

They have Letang, Maata, Dumoulin, Hunwick, and a couple of guys I'm forgetting. Daley left. There are foot speed concerns with Maata. Niemi played in net last night. He's backing up Murray this year. Hangover is likely part of it.

He certainly picked up or changed his game after moving to the Pens.

Catching the Lightning/Panthers game. SErgachev has been ok. Lost the puck a couple of times in his own end because he needs to realize he's not bigger and stronger than everyone else anymore. But he's made some nice plays in the offensive zone. Generally ok and likely to stick, I think.

Justin Schultz is no slouch either. He really struggled before arriving in Pittsburgh. Since arriving, he's been his best puck-moving self without being a liability.

Bishop took a shot to the head and had to leave. I guess he was cut considering the way the puck hit his mask. Ouch.
