I'm really surprised with how some teams are out of the gate.
The Rangers are 1-5-1 The Oilers are 1-4 The Devils are 5-1

AS much as the hockey gods hate the Habs lately, they love the Leafs. DEtroit outshoots TO 10-5 in the first and Leafs lead 4-1. Four goals on 5 shots. Really? Two of the goals were snipes, and two were just "shoot it at the goal and see what happens", and the puck found a path. One thing about TO. They come away with the puck a lot in scrambles. Are they stronger than everyone else? they're certainly healthier. Over a full season now and very few injuries.

The Leafs' third period meltdowns have disappeared, as they show the ability and confidence to keep up the offensive push.
Top-end talent has that effect on a roster.
They're on the way up. I was leaving Toronto around 6:00 pm yesterday. The city is hockey-alive.
Nothing like knowing your team has a legit shot every night because the stars will come to play.
The Shanaplan is working.

Watching Preds/Rangers. Two bonehead plays by Emelin, 2-0 Rangers.

Leafs get a late break vs. Los Angeles...via a really dumb play from the opposing goalie.
Kings were down 3-2 with just over 2:00 left in the third...Quick stepped out of his crease and shoved his blocker into Komarov who was skating by. Komarov perhaps went down too easily, but 2:00 for "stupidity" is warranted....
Ruined any chance of attaining at least a single point for the Kings.

Good article on TSN about the young blueline in Columbus. Like Nashville, it's a young and dynamic back end, probably doesn't have a super elite guy but it's hard not to like this group:
Seth Jones, Zach Werenski, Jack Johnson, Ryan Murray, David Savard.... average age is 24.

Werenski could be great and Jones is very good. Lots of quality there.

Anyone notice how many teams have been on both sides of blowouts? Montreal isn't the only one. The Pens have had two 7-1 losses and a game where they gave up 10. It's happened to a bunch. Certainly more than I can remember through the first month of the season.

Leafs coming back down to earth after that Cup-planning start to the season ... still a dynamic team, though ...
Cheers.

As so many Leaf fans say that the Habs are nothing without Charlie Lindgren Carey Price, I wonder how the Leafs will do while missing Matthews?

Leafs have won 5 straight...and all without Matthews.
Andersen stole the 2 pts. vs the Devils tonight.

It looks as if the Oilers will be in a lottery situation AGAIN, in a very DEEP draft.
Unbelievable.
The NHL should adopt a "Sorry, you've had more than your share." clause.

It looks as if the Oilers will be in a lottery situation AGAIN, in a very DEEP draft. Unbelievable. The NHL should adopt a "Sorry, you've had more than your share." clause. They have some company from at least one other Canadian team right now. The Oiler story is a lot more surprising than ours though. I think most of us challenged Berg's moves (or non moves) in the offseason and many felt this team was one with some pretty serious questions marks heading into the season. The Oilers, on the other hand, were pre-season co-favourites for the Cup with odds makers. The fans were buoyed by a pretty good finish to the season and a darn good playoff run that many thought could have and should have gone further. The cornerstones of the young and exciting offense were locked up in the off season. Things were looking good, and then the season started. McD scored a hattrick in game one and all was well. Then the scoring disappeared. There were questions about the defense, goaltending, and depth of scoring (all the usual suspects). Now whispers of "here we go again" are all over town when last spring you could not go five feet without a car with an Oilers car flag or someone wearing their Orange Crush jerseys. Heck, you could not find a McD one to buy in stores during the playoffs. It is weird, this is the first year in ages that I have not yet secured a ticket for the Habs' now-annual trek to Oil Country. The game is in a month (just before Christmas) and I am really wondering how good a game it will be to justify the highly over-inflated secondary ticket market (I missed out on the tiny box office opportunity to buy). We shall see.

We shall see. A lot of rumblings/suggestions about the Habs and Oilers swinging a deal. i.e. The Habs have what the Oilers need to win now (or soon)....while the Oilers have what the Habs need to start a true rebuild/re-tool. And most don't want Berg having any hand in it.

There is definitely lots of smoke about the two teams right now. Chiarelli has swung a few odd deals too.
But I agree, I do not like the kind of mind set that Berg may be in to try and swing a deal. Will he be making a deal to try and save the season and his hide, or will he be taking one for the longer good of the team and conceding that making the playoffs is already too long a stretch goal for the way this team has played the first quarter of the season? And I don't trust Molson anymore to have in place the right checks and balances to make sure the "right" moves are made, whatever those may be.

Unless it is for a minimum of Leon D. don't even bother calling. I wouldn't touch Nugent Hopkins with a 15 ft pole.

Those throwing Patches for him against a wall and hoping it sticks are out to lunch imo. Nuge does have 17 points in 21 games, but I just don't think he's the right fit. I'm not sure we're a good fit as a trade partner. If Sergachev were still in the fold, I'd say we were. He's what they need; a dynamic puck mover who can skate and score. Hell we do too. Anyway. Weber would shore up their defensive deficiencies, but Larsson, Russell and Nurse aren't scrubs. It has more to do with their forwards. Sekara has been on IR for awhile, and that hurts. They do have the cap space to take Shea.

Leafs in Edmonton.
If it weren't for bad luck....
1:05 left in a 4-4 game...
Kris Russell spins and shoots the puck past his own goalie.
Talk about clearing and not knowing where you are....
Leafs get the empty-netter....6-4 final.

He was there in his stall to face the music afterwards. Yikes.

I noticed that McLellan went over to Russell and patted him on the back in support. The Oilers have seen a worse own-goal....

Looks like the Sens want their coach fired... losing 5-0 at the end of the 2nd vs Winnipeg.
