Figured it was time to start this thread for a new season.
Of interest (and I think this is a small thing that may hurt the Leafs a lot unless Dubas fixes it), Curtis McElhinney was claimed on waivers by Carolina. The Leafs have elected to go with Garrett Sparks who is a favourite of Dubas' Sparks is 25 and has paid his dues, but it's a real gamble on Dubas' part, not something unusual for him. He wins far more of those gambles than he loses. This one may go against him, though. McElhinney was really good for Toronto last year and continued that good play in the preseason. When asked if he thought he'd made the team, McElhinney quickly replied 'yes'. I thought so too. Sparks was hardly efficient. Two aspects here. It's a good idea, when possible, to have a veteran as the back up goalie. Not only do they realize they aren't competition for the starter, they're also a good sounding board for the starter, being an experienced keeper. Sparks is not that. Anderson will likely not ask Sparks much about any troubles he may be having. Secondly, it's a simple matter of winning and losing games. The more the back up can provide decent goaltending and winning games, the less the team will have to rely on the starter and the fresher the starter will be for the playoffs. Unless Sparks finds some confidence or ability he hasn't shown to date, that isn't going to be the case in Toronto. Big gamble for Dubas, but I guess he was worried about losing Sparks on waivers. Instead he's lost McElhanney on waivers. Sparks may cost a little less than McElhinney as well, and Dubas needs every penny he can find to resolve the Nylander situation. My guess is that in the long run, they're going to have to trade Nylander. I can see Matthews costing at least what McDavid costs and then there's Marner, who looks like he's going to light it up this year if he stays healthy. That could be $33MM + tied up in 3 players.

I thought that Lamoriello might offer sheet Nylander, especially with what's happened between the two teams. He either gets a very good young player or he puts the leafs up against the cap. His job is to make his team better & maybe, weaken an opponent. Yet, nothing.
I don't get this lack of use. Is it some sort of stupid gentleman's agreement?

I suspect a 'gentleman's agreement' is very much in place. I'm curious how much Nylander is asking for. Let's say you offered him $8MM a year. You'd' have to give up a first, second and third pick. Easy peasy. It might not be a good idea for the bottom dwellers like Montreal, Detroit, Vancouver, but for the Islanders, or Canes, or any team with a bit of CAP space and a middling draft position, it makes all the sense. Of course the Leafs would match, but then they'd end up having to trade Nylander and might not get full value for him. Bad enough having $33M tied up in 3 players, but I don't think they can ice a competitive team with 4 players taking up $40M. Add in Kadri's $4.5, Reilly's $5, Andersen's $5MM and Zaitsev's $4.5 and you're up to $59MM for 8 players. That leaves $20 MM to fill out the other 15 players. All you can afford is a bunch of 4th liners and 3rd pairing defensemen.

Cap's Tom Wilson suspended 20 games. I have to commend Parros as much as I chided him re Domi's suspension. Twenty games is meaningful and if that doesn't get the message through to Wilson, doubling it the next time or making it a full season suspension may send the message. I wonder how effective he will be if he has to rein in his game? McLellan may yet regret that contract. www.tsn.ca/caps-wilson-suspended-20-games-1.1185306

That is a sizeable chunk, and really hurts Wilson's wallet after signing his new deal.

Yeah. A quarter of the season and $1.26 million is a very strong message. I did not think they had it in them.

When Eller did the hand circles he was looking at his own bench, ready to celebrate. Just another lame excuse from Marchand. Even if Eller DID taunt the bench, that's no reason for an intentional thug-mugging. Marchand should get at least 10 games. He's a serial offender. Imagine if Eller had suffered a concussion when he hit the ice with no helmet. As it was, Marchand delivered two really solid punches at the end. The first cut Eller's head, the second was in the face. Idiot.

You can never take Marchand at his word. When he went after Sami Salo, he said it was to protect himself. That was an obvious lie, and was called out about it during the hearing.
He will never learn. He will always go after players. If the NHL wants to take this type of thing seriously (like with Domi and Wilson), then they need to be firm with Marchand.

Catching the Pens-Caps game. Matt Murray is having a tough game. He’s given up 3 goals in half a period and hasn’t looked sharp at all. Wow. If Murray isn’t good I think you might think of lumping Pittsburgh in with those which will have to fight for a playoff spot. The Pens have their holes. Maata has a bad giveaway leading to a goal. How bad has it been? Brooks Optik scored on an unscreened point shot.

No suspension for Marchand. Not even a review.
Wow.
The NHL is completely corrupt.

Button really went off on Marchand and his antics on TSN. Lost his cool a little. I agree with Button, but I couldn't help but chuckle a little... Button is already a bit of an awkward character, and being angry makes him even more so.

They play one another again in February. Wilson, barring another suspension, will be back. Pretty simple, Marchand has a target on his back. If any player deserved to have a bounty put on them, it's Brad. Wilson and Orpik have a singular focus in the next game. Mame Marchand.

Elbows to the head, slew foot into the boards, submarine hits, spearing.... Since then.... Put "on notice" for the licking incident. Now, it's apparently okay to jump and pummel a player if you think he was over-celebrating. Frontier justice can't be far away.

The likelihood of him signing another contract with the speed of the game is unlikely. He's also strong enough to manhandle Brad. Good candidate. Wilson has to be careful of course, but either player could employ tactics. Submarine him on a zone entry, and while in the act you fall on him. Maybe an elbow inadvertently catches his face on the way down. Or be less subtle. There will be scrums. Grab him and pummel him. If the league thought his attack on Eller was a hockey play ...

So a Hab gets suspended for 6 preseason games for trying to fight a guy who didn't want to fight ..... And when the season starts, the double standard starts

So the Cup-front-runner Leafs barely eke out a win against the Habs and lose to the Senators. Cue the excuses.

Tavares with a hat-trick, Matthews with 2 goals....Rielly wins it in OT against the Hawks, 7-6.
Entertaining game. If Toronto had a defense, they'd run away with the Atlantic.
Goalies having a hard time adjusting to the somewhat smaller equipment? Lots of pucks sneaking through.

All I could think of was if PK put his hand to his ear like Matthews did when he scored late to make it 6-5 Leafs, CBC/Sporstnet?Cherry wouldn't be calling it "being cheeky". IIRC there was an onslaught of high scoring games early last year as well. There's a definite adjustment to the changes that have been made each of the last two years. Leg pads last year. Chest protector this year. Combine the latter with the slimmed down jersey, and a lot more puck should sneak between the arms. I'm all for it. The league needs to continue to remove the aides that have been put in place to help stop the puck. Gear should protect. That's it. Make it about the save again, not just getting in the way.

"I agree." -- Georges Vezina They don't have to go back that far . Pre 94 lockout would be sufficient. Look at Roy's gear on the 93 cup run and compare it to stuff he wore near the end of his career in Colorado. Do that, and a .900 sv % and goals against under 3.00 will be considered elite again.
